SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa.The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong.His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. All his upper teeth were knocked out," she said.Sources say in all, eight guards were injured, including one with a fractured bone in his back.Armstrong says because of an ongoing investigation, she can't reveal details of the melee, but says the guards fought hard for their lives and the lives of their fellow guards."They are all heroes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Members of a newly formed Guardian Angels chapter in Pacific Beach went on patrol for the first time Saturday night.Members of the Sacramento Chapter traveled to San Diego to train the new volunteers. Administrator Sarah Bonesteel joined after a neighborhood crime walk, saying "crime is getting out of control, we've lost our parks, and our library and things like that."RELATED: Guardian Angels look to start street patrols in Pacific BeachThe Guardian Angels are a national crime prevention nonprofit organization that started in New York in 1979. The group said it created chapters in over 130 cities in 13 countries.While the group has several programs to prevent crime, the most visible are its street patrols. The Pacific Beach Chapter hopes to provide a safe environment after the bars close.Guardian Angels patrol in groups of at least two while wearing red berets and uniforms, and say the patrols are meant to serve as a visual deterrent and aim to avoid violent confrontations.Angels on patrols are unarmed but trained in self-defense to protect themselves in case a situation becomes physical. They hope they do not have to use their training.The organization conducts background checks on new members to ensure everyone's safety. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a new season with new threads for the San Diego Padres.The Padres unveiled new home and away sets of uniforms sporting the team's classic brown colors during a fashion show-style event at Petco Park Saturday.Third baseman Manny Machado, first baseman Eric Hosmer, and shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. were on hand to model the new look the Friars take into 2020. Two styles of the new uniforms featured a return to pinstripes, one on a white base reading "Padres" and the other on dark gray reading "San Diego."
