MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida police officer’s wife died after becoming trapped in the back of his patrol vehicle for several hours during a hot afternoon. Investigators are treating the death of 56-year-old Clara Paulino as an accident. She died Friday afternoon while her 58-year-old husband Aristides Paulino was sleeping in their Miami Shores home after finishing a midnight shift. The Miami Herald reports Paulino woke up around 5 p.m. and started looking for his wife, finding her cell phone on the back patio. He and one of his sons found Clara in the vehicle. Officials say she had climbed into the backseat of his marked SUV to find something when the doors somehow closed, and a self-locking mechanism engaged. The vehicle has a partition between the back seat and front seat, meaning Clara could not reach the horn. “It’s literally a cage,” one Miami police officer familiar with the vehicle told the Miami Herald.Temperatures reached over 90 degrees as she spent about four hours in the vehicle. 1037

Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday that it has discovered efforts by Iran, China and Russia to launch cyberattacks on the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer security and trust, wrote that Microsoft was able to stop the cyberattacks from happening, and have notified the campaigns of the three countries’ efforts.“We disclose attacks like these because we believe it’s important the world knows about threats to democratic processes,” Burt wrote. “It is critical that everyone involved in democratic processes around the world, both directly or indirectly, be aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves in both their personal and professional capacities. We report on nation-state activity to our customers and more broadly when material to the public, regardless of the actor’s nation-state affiliation. We are taking extra steps to protect customers involved in elections, government and policymaking.”Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The Trump campaign responded to Microsoft’s cybersecurity report."As President Trump’s re-election campaign, we are a large target, so it is not surprising to see malicious activity directed at the campaign or our staff,” Thea McDonald, deputy national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said. “We work closely with our partners, Microsoft and others, to mitigate these threats. We take cybersecurity very seriously and do not publicly comment on our efforts.”The Biden campaign also responded to the report."We are aware of reports from Microsoft that a foreign actor has made unsuccessful attempts to access the non-campaign email accounts of individuals affiliated with the campaign," the campaign said. "We have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for them. Biden for President takes cybersecurity seriously, we will remain vigilant against these threats, and will ensure that the campaign's assets are secured." 3443

Mail delivery is something just about everyone depends on, but for millions of Americans, mail services are a vital lifeline for health.“Levothyroxine which is a thyroid medication, I've taken this probably 40 years,” 87-year-old Barbara Raizen said. She takes multiple medications. “I right now live in a senior residence, I live in independent living.”She relies on the Postal Service for a lot of reasons, one being her medications.“It’s cheaper, it’s cheaper than the drug store, it’s cheaper than King Soopers,” she said. “And you know, every dollar counts.”That and it’s difficult for her to leave, due to COVID-19 restrictions. “If we go out we have to come back and be quarantined for two weeks,” Raizen said.Millions share similar concerns as the U.S. Postal Service deals with increased demand, lower processing capacity, and potential cost cutting.“It’s really a problem,” Raizen said. “If the prescription runs out, I have to call the doctor and he calls it back in but it comes by mail and it takes 7 to 10 days or more to get it.”“It’s both the increase in volume and the decrease in the processing capacity,” said Jeannette Song, an operations management expert and Duke University professor. “Many more people ordered online, so that increased the volume for the postal services.”The National Association of Letter Carriers said the Postal Service handles 1.2 billion prescription drug shipments a year, nearly 4 million every day. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 14 million people relied on mail order pharmacies for at least one prescription in 2018.“At each step, the process has its capacity,” Song said. “It’s multistage processing, so this is a journey of that. Certainly each step takes some time.”While USPS is experiencing strains right now, she said this happens other times, too.“Holidays,” she said. “Usually get delays, it’s just the same thing”With all the debates going on over cost cutting and the current pressures on the Postal Service, millions are worried. Some taking to Twitter to share their story under the #USPSMeds hashtag.“The post office is important,” Sandy Reavey said. She also relies on the Postal Service for her medications. “It’s just easier. You don't have to go and stand in line at the pharmacy, and it can be cheaper because you can get a three month supply versus doing it every month and having to go back every month to the pharmacy.” She added that especially right now, not everyone necessarily wants to stand in a line with a bunch of people. She receives multiple medications through the mail. “If I don’t take the medication, it causes my heart to go out of whack and could cause me to have a heart attack or a stroke.”As debates continue over Postal Service overtime and other cost cutting measures, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has promised to suspend for now. Sandy and Barbara continue hoping their medications make it on time.“Growing up I’ve already trusted their mail service to deliver and not tamper with my mail,” Reavey said.“What are you supposed to do? Can’t do everything online,” Raizen said. 3096

Lumber stocks are at a historic high. We haven't seen these numbers since the 2008 housing boom and then crash. Experts say that's in part because of the housing market and record low mortgage rates.2020, the unprecedented year where nothing goes as expected, has brought us what realtors call a "sellers' market"."There’s plenty of buyers in the marketplace, but not enough supply so what we are seeing is multiple offers happening frequently on mid-price homes. So heavy competition in the marketplace.” Dr. Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, said. The country's largest trade organization has 1.4 million members who help people buy and sell homes. Dr. Yun says the nation's housing market has even surpassed pre-pandemic sales. He attributes a lot of that to low mortgage rates and people realizing that working from home means they need more room.“Because of the strong demand for housing and we have a shortage of homes in the marketplace, so whatever home builders build, they can find a buyer so they build more homes. But one of the constraints is lack of construction workers along with the material cost that goes into construction, such as lumber,” says Dr. Yun, who also pointed out the country's underproduction.“Home builders have been producing below historical average for 10 straight years and the cumulative effect of underproduction is we don’t have sufficient inventory and that is the reason why home prices are rising and we need to build more homes to get into balance,” added Dr. Yun.Which is why, Laura Gonzalez, associate professor of Finance at California State University Long Beach, says we're experiencing a supply and demand situation when it comes to wood.“We just don’t have enough wood,” Gonzalez said. “It's difficult to make it ready and then transport it because of the pandemic. It's not that the industry is changing its just that we have had a shift both in supply and demand.”Gonzalez also says it's the basic equation of high demand meaning lower supply, which sends prices up and stocks soaring. Then there's the factor of where our wood comes from. She says, “We import some of our lumber from Canada both from lumber and other products. If we depend on other nations, we are more susceptible to changes in supply.”So, what comes next?“The issue of supply versus demand is going to correct in two years, but the opportunities for climate finance are ongoing that is not going to finish,” Gonzalez said.Which is why Dr. Yun says home prices will hold firm, and if you're waiting for a ‘burst’ or for prices to decrease, you might be waiting a while.“In future years, mortgage rate will certainly rise and that will choke off some of the demand, but hopefully we have adequate supply so we have a more balanced market condition where prices rise in manageable, 3-4% each year and people will feel comfortable at that rate of price appreciation,” says Dr. Yun.Dr. Yun recommends if you want or need to buy, don't overstretch your budget as the competition is fierce out there. If you want to sell, don't get greedy and overprice because your home will get stuck on the market. It's yet another aspect to this odd year that has brough the unexpected to us all. 3245

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say gunmen burst into an unregistered drug rehabilitation center in central Mexico and opened fire, killing 24 people and wounding seven.Police in the north-central state of Guanajuato said the attack occurred Wednesday in the city of Irapuato. Apparently, the attackers shot everyone at the rehab center. Three of the seven wounded were reported in serious condition.State police say nobody was abducted.Guanajuato is the scene of a bloody turf battle between the Jalisco cartel and a local gang.No motive was given in the attack, but Mexican drug gangs have killed street-level dealers at such facilities in the past. 666
