SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday. The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release. They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. They say the student lives off-campus. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. I mean if anyone wrote me a letter like that I would think it was an angry letter.”10News reached out to New Life Christian Chapel, and Pastor Thomas J. McNearny told 10News in an e-mail:"My purpose in distributing the flyers was simply to get the Word of God out to the public. I get no perverse pleasure in scaring people but simply want the best for people by helping inform them of what God's will for them is and how Jesus Christ has made a wonderful salvation available for them. The apostle Paul did say that: 'Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. ..' Judgment is coming but there is a way to be ready. We love people and want to welcome them to come and find peace with God." 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego man thanked lifeguards Thursday for saving his life after he fell from the Ocean Beach pier.Adrian Castillo, 19, was drinking alcohol with his brother and friends in January when he suddenly fell backwards into the cold water.Castillo’s brother called 911 and after nine minutes, lifeguards Marc Brown and Jim Lockwood found him floating face-down in the water.Castillo was technically dead for five minutes. He spent three days in a coma and also suffered pneumonia from the cold water.“I have a scar in the back of my head,” said Castillo. “I have a couple of scars on my chest from grabbing on the poles.”Castillo is now fully recovered.“I’m very grateful,” said Castillo.  “If it wasn’t for them I probably would have been lost out in the ocean for like a month or something.”“We’re happy that you’re back and safe and alive,” Brown said to Castillo. “You have a second chance in life now.”San Diego Lifeguards, Police and city officials want everyone who heads outdoors this summer to be educated on rip current safety, drowning prevention, bonfires and know what they should not bring to our local beaches. The city has created a website to help guide locals and visitors to safety. 1230

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After weeks of large crowds, no masks or social distancing in Ocean Beach, the City of San Diego put together a compliance team to educate people about the county’s public health order.A team of about 12 people consisting of code compliance, parking enforcement, and park rangers handed out face masks to those who didn’t have them on and asked for compliance.“There was unacceptable levels of people coming together, congregating together getting really, really close without masks or social distancing,” said Joel Day, the senior advisor for COVID Response and Recovery with the City of San Diego. “We’re asking people don’t congregate here, please wear a mask if you’re around other people, and please socially distance and so far it’s looking pretty great.”Within one hour, Day said the team handed out about 300 masks.Earlier in the day, residents noted that Veterans Plaza in Ocean Beach appeared to be less crowded. But as the sun went down, the drum circle returned, and so did the crowds. They cleared out by about 10:30 PM.Resident Tim Johnson said home and business owners have had to deal with the same scene repeatedly. Crowds are filling up the park after the farmers market.“There’s piles of trash that get left and open containers, aggressive behavior,” he said.On Tuesday, the city put up a fence to keep the crowds out, but it was quickly torn down. While Johnson said he appreciates the city’s efforts, he said more needs to be done to solve the problem.“The COVID issue is secondary to the other problem, and that other problem is that illegal, obnoxious, aggressive behavior has continued on without being enforced,” said Johnson. 1677

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An indoor plant delivery company that launched amid the coronavirus pandemic is thriving.ABC 10News first told you about IvyMay & Co. in July. Five months later, the entrepreneurs say they are thriving, thanks to their expansion into a chicken coop.Starting a business takes guts. Starting a business during a global pandemic is extremely risky."We built our business around the idea of lockdown and quarantine," IvyMay & Co. co-owner Cody Warden said.RELATED: San Diego couple launches new business during COVID-19 pandemicWarden and girlfriend, Tammy Nguyen, thought if people cannot be outside, they would bring the outdoors to them. That inspired the creation of IvyMay & Co., an online houseplant curating and delivery company. In July, Warden was newly jobless, and Nguyen was working her corporate PR job when they started the company. Since then, Nguyen quit her job, and their business blossomed. They went from having twenty deliveries to now more than 120 in a week. They hired more staff and outgrew their space almost immediately."We needed to figure out a spatial solution so that we can continue to grow," Nguyen said.Their solution was Warden's father's backyard in Encinitas, specifically their chicken coop. Warden and his father renovated the 300 square foot space to have a greenhouse and an office. It is not your typical warehouse, but they say it is perfect."It's like working with what you have and being able to pivot and do whatever it takes to take your business to the next step," Nguyen said. They say it is this kind of ingenuity, a loving family, and loyal customers that keep them focused. Whether they expand to delivery to other counties or build a storefront, only time will tell. But pandemic or not, they plan to stick around."We may not know where we're going to be in six months, but I can guarantee you that we will be around for you to talk to us in six months. Hopefully will be somewhere much further down the road," Warden said. This Sunday, December 6, 2020, IvyMay & Co. will open their first in-person pop-up store at the Liberty Station San Diego Vintage Collective. 2151
