ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 337, with 1,148 others still missing, Chen Jianhua, official sources said Monday night.Another 1,242 people were rescued, Chen, Party chief of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which administers the county, said at a press conference.Chen said 218 injured survivors had received treatment in local hospitals, and 41 severely injured ones had been transferred to hospitals in the provincial capital, Lanzhou, as of 4:30 p.m.

YUSHU, Qinghai, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the quake zones in China's far northwestern Qinghai Province would be quadrupled by 2015 on the basis of that of last year, Luo Huining, governor of the province said here Friday."By the end of China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the GDP in Qinghai quake zones would reach four times as much as that of 2009, with the service industry accounting for 45 percent of it," Luo said during an exclusive interview with Xinhua, exactly 100 days after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu in April.The earthquake left 2,698 people dead and 270 missing.Luo said local authorities would focus on improving public services and promoting urbanization of the quake zones during the reconstruction phase.According to Luo, authorities would try to help all farmers and herdsmen in the region settle down within three years, upgrade their housing facilities, and provide them with basic access to safe drinking water."By the end of this year, local government would invest 5.55 billion yuan to rebuild 80 percent of farmers' houses in the quake zones," Luo said. Total investment in housing reconstruction in the regions would reach 9.6 billion yuan within three years.

Another 212 people were missing.Direct economic losses cause by the floods totaled 120.2 billion yuan, the office said, adding that 97.5 million people and 6.16 million hectares of farmland were affected.In Hubei Province, continuous downpours and rain-triggered floods since July 3 have left 32 people dead and two missing.Heavy rainfall has raised water levels in many rivers in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, China's longest, and a new round of rainstorm is expected to pelt the river course soon, bringing possibility of serious floods.The river's Three Gorges Dam raised the speed of water discharge Thursday afternoon to save space for the upcoming gushing flooding waters.

  

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Health Ministry on Saturday called for heightened measures against the possible spread of bird flu virus after a woman in central China died from the disease on June 3.The ministry urged health authorities at all levels to increase prevention and control measures on respiratory diseases as the country's southern areas are entering into the peak flu season.Health authorities at all levels, especially in Shanghai and Guangzhou, host cities respectively for the 2010 World Expo and the Asian Games, were asked to formulate emergency plans to cope with the possible spread of the disease, according to a notice posted on the ministry website.Health authorities at all levels should report and respond quickly to unidentifiable pneumonia, it said, adding they should also prepare medical equipment and pharmaceuticals to cope with possible outbreaks of respiratory diseases, such as bird flu.Health authorities in Shanghai, Guangzhou, quake-hit Yushu in Qinghai Province and southern provinces plagued by floods were also asked to coordinate the assistance of experts to take effective measures on disease prevention and control.

  

SHANGHAI, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Saturday with former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who was here to attend the Shanghai World Expo's Japanese National Pavilion Day.Liu spoke highly of Hatoyama's efforts during his tenure in advancing Sino-Japanese relations, and said China was ready to work with Japan to promote ties.Liu hoped the Shanghai Expo could serve as a good opportunity to promote bilateral people-to-people exchanges, as such exchanges could help further develop bilateral ties.Hatoyama resigned from the top post on June 2, and Naoto Kan succeeded him as prime minister.Hatoyama, who was here as special envoy of the new prime minister, attended an official celebration ceremony for Japanese National Pavilion Day together with Liu earlier Saturday.During the ceremony, Liu expressed China's appreciation of Japan's support in the preparation of the Expo, adding Japan's rich experience of hosting the event helped spread the Expo spirit.Japan has hosted the comprehensive Expo twice and the professional Expo three times."I believe the Shanghai Expo will provide important opportunities for the two countries and two peoples to deepen mutual understanding and bilateral cooperation," she said.Hatoyama said he was glad to attend the ceremony, because his wife was born in Shanghai. And he hoped people in the world could use their "hearts" and "technologies," to contribute to the harmonious development of the world.The Japan Pavilion, with the theme of "Harmony of the Hearts, Harmony of the Skills," is eye-catching with its attractive appearance and clever use of hi-technology. Dubbed the "Purple Silkworm Island" by Chinese people, the pavilion is semi-circular in structure and covered by a purple membrane material.
