FORT IRWIN, Calif. – The U.S. Army conducts tough realistic training at the Fort Irwin National Training Center in the deserts of California. There, you’ll find soldiers spending a 21-day rotation before they deploy overseas. “Our training area is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and its nickname is ‘The Box,’” said Sgt. Billy Dolan. “When they’re in ‘The Box,’ they’ll conduct 10 days of force on force training, followed by 10 days of live fire training,” said Lt. Kevin Lenahan. “This compound is supposed to give the rotational unit an urban fight.” According to the U.S. Army, the NTC training area contains an uncluttered electromagnetic spectrum and sprawls over 1,000 miles to facilitate large-scale maneuvering for Abrams tanks and other heavy wheeled and light mechanized vehicles. And, it possesses restricted airspace for aviation assets. This recipe cooks up the ideal site for the largest Army training exercises across the U.S. For some, they are conducting their final exercise prior to deployment. “A lot of my friends are getting deployed,” Dolan said. “Most of them are going to Syria or Afghanistan.” During one rotation, there are between 4,000 and 7,000 soldiers enduring intense training. “It gives the people who come here the first real world experience of what could happen without taking casualties,” Lenahan said. According to the U.S. Army, units are deployed to Fort Irwin for 21 days, 14 of which are spent in what is referred to as "The Box" (as in sandbox). It's the vast desert training area that includes 15 simulated towns and the previously mentioned tunnel and caves, as well as expansive gunnery ranges and tank battle arenas. The soldiers learn to navigate through civilians, insurgents, criminal networks and military forces, using what is known as Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES). It’s basically a form a laser tag and allows the units to train using blanks. NTC rotations incorporate a complex scenario design laden with social, ethical and moral dilemmas; the goal of which is to develop leaders while exposing them to multifaceted problems. Units training at the NTC face a complex hybrid threat. Units must face a near-peer opposing force, while taking on an insurgent force. FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The female volunteer at the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, Florida, who was found dead inside a fenced play area next to the shelter Thursday died of severe blood loss due to dog bites, according to the St. Lucie County Medical Examiner's Office.It ruled the death accidental.The Human Society of St. Lucie County has identified the woman as Christine Liquori."The dogs here have lost a dear dear friend and we’ve lost a dear dear friend and wonderful volunteer. Whatever needs to be done for those dogs, Christine was there for it whether it was walking them, bathing them, playing with them, loving on them, taking their picture," Humane Society of St. Lucie County Executive Director David Robertson said Friday before the medical examiner revealed its results.He said a mixed-breed dog was with Liquori at the time and had no prior issues. The dog had been at the shelter for about 8 days prior to the incident. "The dogs and all of us here are really going to miss her and we want to extend our deepest and sincerest sympathies to all of her families," Robertson said.The dog was set to be euthanized Friday.Liquori was a member of Paws Fur Recovery, a non-profit organization made up of people in recovery that volunteer to find homes for dogs in shelters. You could say Liquori saved dogs every day because they saved her.“She’s just coming up on what would have been, coming up 6 years clean and sober on May 23rd,” said Lori Boettger, President of Paws Fur Recovery. Shortly after starting her journey to recovery from addiction, Liquori joined Paws Fur Recovery. “She loved loved loved what she did and she died doing what she loved,” said Boettger. Robertson said Liquori was in the fenced play area with a dog alone on Thursday. It’s not clear why there was no one else with her. He said she was found dead. Another volunteer for Paws Fur Recovery and close friend of Liquori’s said she started her journey to recovery from addiction with Liquori 6 years ago and got involved with Paws Fur Recovery because of Liquori. “I feel like this is an isolated issue. It’s not something we’ve encountered so you know it’s sad. I will continue to be going out to the shelter to help these dogs because I’ve had a second chance and they deserve one too,” said Sandy Robieous, Paws Fur Recovery volunteer. For years, there has been a shortage of African American men teaching in public schools. Now, a university in Maryland hopes to become a nationwide model that gets more black men to the head of the class. Julius Davis is an associate professor at Bowie State University, located about 45 minutes outside Washington, D.C. He’s working on a lesson plan he hopes will impact the future of black students in Maryland. “I always knew the one thing I wanted to do was give back,” he says. This school year, Davis is in charge of a new effort to get more black males interested in teaching and ultimately, in front of the classroom. It could be a tough test. Black men make up less than two percent of teachers in the workforce nationwide, according to latest statistics by the Department of Education. “I think that there's a lot of negativity about what goes on in education and why people shouldn't pursue the career: low pay, issues with students,” he explains. Davis hopes to change that perception by getting high school boys excited about becoming teachers through conferences, trips and mentoring programs. It’ll be paid for with the help of a ,000 grant by the university system of Maryland. “Many black males express an interest in education early on. The problem is they're not engaged throughout their 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years, so we lose them,” Davis says. For Davis, it's a way to pay it forward and remember the way black teachers helped him.“I would say they went above and beyond,” he recalls. “They pulled me to the side when I wasn't doing right and got me on track.
