SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the cost of living going up in San Diego, a lot of people are looking for ways to make extra cash. A new startup in San Diego called Bounce wants to help drivers maximize their income. "The drivers are the most important element," said CEO Mark Potter. Potter transformed the front of his law office into the startup space. He is a longtime fan of rideshare. "Before there was rideshare, I was hiring people off craigslist to give me rides," Potter said.His model for this new company is to focus on the driver and give them more incentives to want to stay and work for the company. "Our drivers are owners. They earn ownership in our company through stock options," said Potter. This stake in the company is one of the main reasons Pamela Bernier signed on to be a driver. Bernier said, "Working my own hours, calling my own shots, still enjoying the income and the people at the same time."Bounce also has a repeat customer option. Riders have the freedom to create a list and request their favorite drivers. They also have the luxury to arrange future rides in advance. According to the company, this provides a safer environment for both the rider and driver and also gives the driver a more consistent cash flow. "I could bounce you here, I can bounce you there, I bounce you home, where you wanna bounce let's go," said Bernier. Uber and Lyft are two other companies dominating the rideshare space. According to Lyft, 68% of drivers are primary earners of their household, and so far in 2018, Lyft passengers also spent an additional million on local businesses in town. According to Uber, rideshare and delivery drivers in California took home more than .97 billion in gross revenue for 2017. Bounce is set for a September launch, and the company is currently interviewing drivers. They require in-person interviews and background checks for each driver. They are also in the process of putting in a panic button option in the app for riders to feel safer during their ride. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Typically dry and brown swaths of San Diego County are currently lush and green due to record-setting levels of rain, indicating the availability of more vegetation with the potential to fuel a wildfire during drier years. To watch for the threat from growing brush and grass, Cal Fire and other agencies track fuel moisture, the amount of water in a plant. When fuel moisture is high, fires do not ignite quickly - or at all, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association. Fires spark easily and spread fast when fuel moisture is low. Any fuel moisture content level below 30 percent indicates the brush is dead and at the mercy of temperatures, humidity and winds, NOAA reports. The calculations are critical for firefighters when Santa Ana conditions arrive and San Diego’s winter storms are a distant memory. “A direct relationship to this rain is how damp that brush is throughout the summer, or how high it is,” said Cal Fire Captain Jon Heggie. “Think of it as a sponge and it’s full of water right now,” said Heggie. “We’ll monitor that throughout the year and as we get closer to the heat of the summer we’ll really pay attention to what those levels are. Once they hit certain thresholds, that’s when we know fire danger is really at its highest.” Fuels were critically dry before San Diego County’s Cedar Fire in 2003, the U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Forestry reported. Humidity levels monitored at the Descanso Fire Station dropped to 4 percent, with the fire moisture level of the brush plunging to the same low. To make the situation worse, the county had experienced several years of below-normal rainfall. Although chaparral and coastal scrub were the most likely to burn in the Cedar Fire, Heggie called grass a “huge contributor” to fire growth in California. Heggie’s assertion echoes what climate change scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego State University and other local research outlets discovered about fire fuel. “One climactic variable that has become important in recent years is high prior-year precipitation, likely due to its role in promoting higher abundance of annual grasses that, once dry, become extremely ignition prone in the subsequent year,” the group wrote in a study about the ecological impacts of climate change. Heggie, who has been fighting fires in San Diego County for 25 years, has noticed the changing weather patterns. “I’ve seen conditions gradually get worse for probably the last decade; what that tells me is that the landscape is reacting to those ten years of drought.” To alleviate the threat, fire agencies routinely conduct brush mitigation activities including controlled burns and, on occasion, using goats to eat through unwieldy vegetation. “There’s so much fuel, we are doing our best to stay in front of it, but the tremendous amount of fuel on the landscape is going to take decades for us to really get a handle on,” said Heggie. Cal Fire increased the amount of controlled burns planned for 2019, but Heggie says preventing fire is key. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A plan to permanently remove the traffic along Normal Street in Hillcrest and replace it with a promenade will be voted on Tuesday. If approved, the westside traffic lanes would become a pedestrian walkway with dedicated bike lanes. It would also make room for the weekly Hillcrest farmers market and other events. “They call it a promenade but where are people promenading to,” says Linda Hanna, owner of Salon Antoine. Hanna has owned the business near the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue for almost 20 years. “We are in favor of something like this, but we need to think it through.”Other business owners are worried because the project would eliminate a driveway to a nearby shopping center.“If you don’t close that driveway, you have a driveway going right to the park, and that’s a real problem,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association. To add space to the east side lanes, some parking spaces will be moved. The Hillcrest Business Association says there are plans to add dozens of parking spaces near Lincoln Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether or not the Padres head to the World Series, Petco Park may still see playoff baseball this season.Under a plan by the MLB, a neutral-site playoff format with teams living in a "bubble" may be finalized next week, though it is awaiting approval by the Players Association, according to ESPN.The plan states that playoffs would start with the top four seeds in the AL and NL hosting all the games in a best-of-three wild-card series: the AL games between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 and the NL games between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.The highest AL seed would be the home team for the division series at Petco Park in San Diego, while the other series heads to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The AL championship series would then be played at Petco Park.On the NL side, the top seed into the division series would play at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and the next-highest seed would play at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The NL championship series would be hosted in Arlington.The MLB's reported plan would begin the World Series on Oct. 20 at Arlington and end no later than Oct. 28.ESPN reports that the Players Association is considering concerns from players who have lived outside of the bubble format, similar to how the NBA has operated this season, with the ability to be around family and friends.
