MENIFEE, Calif. — The family of the woman who allegedly shot three people at YouTube headquarters on Tuesday say they tried to warn police about a potential attack. The family of Nasim Aghdam also described her as a peaceful person."She was a nice person," Agham's brother, who asked his name not be used, said. "I mean maybe not today, but she never hurt any creature."Aghdam's family said her passion was preaching in favor of vegans and rallying against animal cruelty. In 2009, she was part of a PETA protest in San Diego. The family says she felt she reached the most people through her YouTube page, but her relationship with the company turned ugly when YouTube changed its filters and she began to lose followers and viewers. 759

Mike Pompeo, the Trump administration's nominee to lead the State Department, made his case for confirmation on Thursday, stressing his service in the military and at the CIA to skeptical lawmakers, and emphasizing the unique place the US holds in the world."America is uniquely blessed, and with those blessings comes a duty to lead," Pompeo said. "As I have argued throughout my time in public service, if we do not lead the calls for democracy, prosperity, and human rights around the world, who will? No other nation is equipped with the same blend of power and principle."The CIA Director, now seeking to become the 70th US secretary of state, is facing an uphill battle at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where one Republican and some Democrats are expected to oppose him. Even if Republican leaders take special measures to move his nomination to the broader Senate, the former House lawmaker still faces a tight vote.Pompeo clearly had those concerns and the voting math in mind as he began what was expected to be a day-long appearance before the committee. But his appearance took a quick turn from foreign policy issues to the domestic, when Sen. Robert Menendez, the leading Democrat on the committee, took the opportunity to press Pompeo on President Donald Trump and the special counsel investigation into links between Russia and the Trump campaign.Menendez asked if Trump had ever asked him to "interfere" in the probe by special counsel Robert Mueller.Pompeo said he had been interviewed by Mueller, and is cooperating with special counsel.Pompeo refused to discuss his conversations with the President, but said that Trump has "never asked me to do anything I consider improper." When Menendez pressed Pompeo several times about conversations he has had with Mueller, Pompeo said, "I think it is most appropriate that while the investigations continue, I not speak to the conversations I've had with the various investigative bodies."He added that "there should be no negative inferences or for that matter positive inferences ... that while these investigations continue I not speak to" any of the conversations he had with Trump. He declined to say if the President asked him to do anything about the Comey probe and could not "recall" the nature of a March 2017 conversation where Trump reportedly asked Pompeo to get Comey to pull back.Excerpts of Pompeo's opening remarks made clear that he will promise to push a hard line on Russia, avoid past mistakes with North Korea, raise the costs for Iran's "dangerous behavior," and rebuild the State Department.  2631

Many people could probably use a haircut right now, after six months of a global pandemic, but probably not like Ewenice the sheep in Australia. She was recently found wandering with about 4-years of growth needing to be sheared off.The abandoned sheep was found in a heavily wooded area in southeast Australia, roaming on a property with no nearby flock or owner. A person spotted the sheep, burdened with the extra large fleece, and reported it to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or RSPCA.The RSPCA estimates the sheep, who they named Ewenice, had not been trimmed in about four years.Ewenice was checked over, given a haircut, and sent to a new home. About 44 pounds of wool was sheared off.“Carrying such a large fleece for an extended period of time would have had dire impact on this ewe’s welfare and quality of life. It was fantastic to see her transformation after shearing and to send her on to her new home,” said Head of Inspectorate Terry Ness.Fleece must be shorn regularly because sheep are unable to shed. 1057

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s medical safety commission has approved the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for the coronavirus.Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell said Friday that Mexico is the fourth country to do so, behind Britain, Canada, and Bahrain.Mexico is set to receive 250,000 doses of the vaccine, enough for 125,000 people.López-Gatel has said that front-line health workers will get the shots first. Vaccinations are expected to begin as soon as next week.López-Gatel says the approval “is, of course, a reason for hope,” though the initial rounds of shots are not nearly enough for Mexico’s health-care workforce. 654

McDonald's is celebrating International Women's Day with a big, gleaming, W."For the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches," said McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis. The giant arches have been physically flipped at just one California restaurant. On Thursday, International Women's Day, upside-down arches will replace rightside-up arches across McDonald's digital channels.Lewis said McDonald's is flipping its logo "in honor of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere."The restaurant chain will also mark the occasion at another 100 US locations, where McDonald's employees will wear special hats and shirts.Related: McDonald's is taking cheeseburgers out of the Happy MealIn recent years, companies have started using International Women's Day to broadcast their views on gender equality."International Women's day is a perfect opportunity for brands to talk about their commitment to empowerment," said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management."It's a perfect venue to get out there and enhance your brand perception," he said.In a statement, McDonald's said that 6 out of 10 managers of US restaurants are women."We have a long history of supporting women in the workplace," the company added.Related: McDonald's is going greenBrands may also be eager to replicate the success of others, Calkins said."When companies see high-profile campaigns that get some traction and get some discussion, they are very quick to jump on the bandwagon."One example of a particularly successful campaign is the "Fearless Girl," sculpture, which was installed across the "Charging Bull," in New York City by State Street ahead of International Women's Day last year. The statue was designed by the financial services company and the advertising firm McCann to call attention to State Street's efforts to improve gender diversity on corporate boards.
