Whether kids learn at school or at home this fall, Nick Rose wants them to learn and practice music. That's Rose’s goal behind his Band In A Box program.Rose has been distributing hundreds of plain brown boxes with the gift of music inside. It's a spinoff from his Band In A Bus program.“We believe it’s like giving away a box of joy,” said Rose. With more and more questions about what classes and extracurriculars will look like as the coronavirus pandemic continues, Band In A Bus is changing its approach to hand out recorders and drum sticks to as many kids as possible.“The least we can do in these trying times is help kids feel some type of happiness and excitement every day,” Rose said. "That’s kind of why we’re trying to pilot this program.”Band In A Bus says budget cuts due to the coronavirus are forcing some schools to cut back music programs even more, which makes these free boxes even more important for kids.“The worst thing that we can do to a kid is strip them of this creative outlet,” Rose said. “As a growing young person, the most valuable thing is learning who you are and your tone of voice.”The Band in a Box program has enough money to help about 500 kids, but it is raising more money to try to impact as many families as possible.“That’s the experience that every kid can kind of relate to – that excitement, that fun,” Rose said. “You could see their smiles as they were drumming. It’s such a powerful emotion.”You can donate to Band In A Box at GoFundMe.com.WCPO's Josh Bazan first reported this story. 1543

When it comes to car sales in California, the Golden State is looking to get a little greener.“Most of our shoppers are looking for a hybrid,” said Chris Wesney, general manager of McCarthy’s, an independent car dealership in San Luis Obispo, California.Wesney says his team sells about 75 vehicles a month with electric vehicles making up 20% of those sales.“That increases every year, year over year,” he said adding he expects that number to increase even more after California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent executive order, which would ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035.“There’s a lot to learn when it comes to buying electric cars,” Wesney said. “The problem that I foresee for some vehicles dealers is the repair facilities.”The state’s mandate has industry leaders shifting gears, and it’s raised questions inside Cuesta College’s automotive technology department.“To just simply say, ‘yes, we’re going to do this’ without looking at all other implications kind of makes me a little nervous,” said John Stokes, division chair of engineering and technology at Cuesta College.Stokes says he supports this decision to move away from fossil fuels in theory, but in reality, he’s questioning everything from how to replace gas taxes to adding enough related infrastructure.“There are so many things that are still question marks on how to be able to do this,” he said. “Do we have the production to satisfy the electricity? Do we have the production for the battery capacity?”Other auto industry leaders are also speaking out about this proposed change.“I certainly understand big, bold ideas but only when they’re affordable,” said Cathy Reheis-Boyd, president of Western States Petroleum Association.Reheis-Boyd says right now there are 736,000 electric vehicles in California compared to 36 million cars and trucks that run on gas and diesel. She believes that taking drivers’ choices away in 15 years could cost many Americans their jobs.“I hope we can change our mindsets that’s to collaborate and bring these brilliant minds so California does have a path,” she said.A path that leads drivers back to the car lot where dealers like Wesney are preparing for the fuel of the future.“It will just be interesting to see how the powergrade and everybody adjusts to the increase demand for electricity,” he said. 2334

When professional team sports resume later this month, a number of MLB and NBA players have decided not to return to action.Over the weekend, pitchers Felix Hernandez and David Price became the latest MLB players top opt out for this year’s baseball season, which is slated to begin within three weeks.Hernandez said,” Never before has an entire MLB season depended so much on everyone in the league’s involvement. Let’s be responsible and keep each other safe. It’s not just for us, but for the game and our own families.”Price also cited concerns about his family on why he opted to sit out the 2020 season.“After considerable thought and discussion with my family and the Dodgers, I have decided it is in the best interest of my health and my family’s health for me to not play this season,” he said.Other professional athletes have expressed concern over the return to sports. Angels star Mike Trout has been seen wearing a mask during on-field workouts.MLS goalkeeper Matt Lampson said athletes aren’t as invincible to the coronavirus as it appears.“For everyone in the ‘These are pro athletes. There is no risk. Nothing happens to them if they get the virus camp - I am high risk,” Lampon tweeted. “And I know for a fact there are multiple others at MLS is Back that are as well - including other players on their way here. This is serious.”Other MLB players confirmed to not participate in the upcoming season include Ian Desmond, Ryan Zimmerman, Joe Ross and Nick Markakis.NBA players who have opted out include Victor Oladipo and DeAndre Jordan. With the MLB, NHL and NBA all scheduled to begin within the next four weeks, the leagues will be heavily relying on frequent COVID-19 testing in order to prevent spreading the virus to other players. 1762

With New Year's Eve right around the corner, a new San Diego company says it can deliver the cure to a hangover right to your front door. But the cost-benefit of the service is up for debate. The company, called CureDash, is an app on the iPhone and GooglePlay stores. It connects San Diegans to providers that offer house calls with licensed nurses who administer an I.V. with a saline-based solution to help rehydrate. They promise to arrive within an hour. "Me and my co-founder both got it and we felt the results within minutes," said Emil Juboori, who co-founded CureDash. "You can request our service through our app. You'll have a short video call with our doctor, you'll do a quick assessment and then we dispatch a nurse to your location."Juboori said the nurses do check patients vitals and ask them health questions once they arrive at their homes. CureDash costs 5 and does not take insurance. "I wouldn't consider this to be effective medical therapy," said Dr. Shawn Evans, an emergency room physician at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. "My strong preference is if you think you need somebody coming out to your house to put a needle into your arm to give you massive resuscitative fluids, ultimately you should be in front of a qualified medical professional and making sure you don't have something more significant."Evans said an I.V. can make you feel better in the short term, but you will urinate a good portion of the extra fluids within an hour. Evans said a trip to urgent care is likely more affordable and that he remains concerned about at-home services like these. Evans said an affordable way to rehydrate is to mix:Six teaspoons of sugarA half teaspoon of saltFour cups of warm waterEvans said to drink a mouthful every five minutes and it will stay in your system. 1814

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders privately berated the White House communications and press staff Friday after a leak the previous day of comments by aide Kelly Sadler about Sen. John McCain, according to several sources familiar with the meeting. In discussing McCain's opposition to CIA nominee Gina Haspel, Sadler,?a special assistant who handles surrogate communications for the White House, said in a private meeting Thursday that it doesn't matter "because he's dying anyway." It was a joke that fell flat, a White House official told CNN. 571
