The Department of Justice is suing to block California laws that extend protections for immigrants living in the United States illegally, commonly referred to as "sanctuary laws."The lawsuit by the Trump administration claims three of the state's laws intentionally undermine federal immigration law, according to The Associated Press.One of the laws prevents local police agencies from asking people about their immigration status or assisting in federal immigration enforcement activities. The Justice Department says these laws are unconstitutional.Attorney General Jeff Sessions, speaking at a law enforcement event in Sacramento Wednesday, said the administration's lawsuit against California was to "invalidate these unjust immigration laws" because the state's laws are a "violation of common sense."Sessions told those in attendance at the California Peace Officers Association's Legislative Day that the state has "a problem" and told California officials to "stop actively obstructing law enforcement … stop protecting lawbreakers."The attorney general singled out Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who recently issued a public warning of an impending immigration raid in her city. The Dallas Police Department said on Tuesday evening that two of its officers and a civilian loss prevention officer were shot at a Dallas Home Depot. The Dallas Police confirmed earlier in the evening that the two officer were in critical condition. Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall said late Tuesday evening that all three victims are out of surgery in a Dallas hospital. "We're asking for your continued prayers for them and their families," Hall said. The shooting reportedly took place around 4:11 p.m. local time.  In a press conference, police identified Armando Juarez, 29, as a person of interest. He is believed to have left the incident driving a white pickup truck. Around 9 p.m. local time, Juarez was arrested after a car pursuit involving Dallas Police and a white pickup truck.Hall said that Juarez will be charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. The freewheeling entrepreneur who built Tower Records into a global business and pioneered a new way to sell music has died at 92.Russ Solomon, who started selling records at his father's pharmacy in the 1950s, passed away on Sunday at his home near Sacramento, California.The founder of Tower Records died while watching the Academy Awards, his son Michael Solomon told the Sacramento Bee."He was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked [his wife] Patti to refill his whiskey," Michael Solomon told the newspaper.Solomon had passed away by the time his wife returned.The first Tower Records opened in Sacramento in 1960, and by 1968 the company had expanded to San Francisco. Its iconic yellow and red signs would later be seen as far away as London and Tokyo.Fans flocked to the stores, attracted by a relaxed atmosphere where it was easy to bond with other music aficionados. Solomon did not have a dress code for employees, who mixed easily with customers."If you came into town, you went into Tower Records," Bruce Springsteen said in a documentary about the company called "All Things Must Pass."Solomon told Billboard Magazine in 2015 that his favorite regular was Elton John."He probably was the best customer we ever had," Solomon said of the pop star. The coronavirus vaccine has been administered to 1 million Americans in the last 10 days, the CDC reported on Wednesday.The first vaccinations were administered to Americans early last week after Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine received an emergency use authorization. Pfizer said last week that it had distributed 2.9 million doses of the vaccine throughout the United States.Earlier this week, Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine candidate began being administered to Americans.So far, there have been over 9.4 million doses of the vaccine distributed throughout the US. Getting them administered is taking some time.Although 1 million vaccinations is a significant milestone, it is a fraction of the vaccinations needed to stop the spread of the virus. The first round of vaccinations are intended for 24 million Americans who work in health care settings or who live or work assisted living facilities. The next step will be to vaccinate 21 million Americans over the age of 75 and 30 million front-line workers, such as teachers, first responders and grocery store employees.“While we celebrate this historic milestone, we also acknowledge the challenging path ahead,” CDC director Robert Redfield said in a statement. “There is currently a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S., but supply will increase in the weeks and months to come.
