SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego leaders returned from their trip to Mexico City on Wednesday night. The three-day trip focused on building stronger border relations. The trip comes a week after President Trump threatened to close the border if congress didn't come up with an immigration deal or if Mexico didn't stop migrants heading north. The delegation included San Diego and Imperial Beach mayors, Kevin Faulconer and Serge Dedina and former mayor Jerry Sanders. Several city council members from various cities also attended meeting with top Mexican officials. A big topic of conversation was the ongoing Tijuana sewage issue. Impeiral Beach Mayor, Dedina, says the conversations were positive and promising. Dedina says plans to fix the issue include reapairing the water plant that's currently spilling the sewage, taking all of the water out of the Tijuana River Valley and putting an earth-fill dam on the Mexican side to stop the sewage from getting to the beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About an hour east of San Diego is a town with few people and a lot of history."In 1880 you'd be getting run over by wagons sitting right here in this little route," Larry Johnson, president of the Mountain Empire Historical Society, says standing on a road in Campo. "I initially came here in 1956."And like many others they come here for a reason.Robert Marks, who owns East County Lumber & Ranch Supply, learned Campo was for sale last week. "We found out the owner was selling all 3 parcels, maybe he won it in a card game!" Marks jokes.While we can't verify that, the current owner of Campo is a Las Vegas investor. He's looking to sell but hasn't named a price.The sale encompasses 28 residential units and seven commercial properties. About 100 to 150 people live in the listing area and about 3,000 are scattered across the whole town. Listing agent Conor Brennan with Marcus & Millichap says interested parties include rehabbers, developers, horse breeders, and movie producers."My reaction is if he sells it I hope we get someone who wants to put something in this community," Marks says."Personally I don't want big housing developments, I'm not for that," Johnson adds.But it wasn't too long ago the town was looking for another buyer in 1999. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Warning that the change would pose serious threats to public health and safety, the San Diego County Police Chiefs' and Sheriff's Association Monday announced its opposition to a state bill that proposes extending California's daily alcohol sales cutoff time from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, vice president of the law enforcement group, asserted that Senate Bill 58 -- which calls for allowing bars in 10 cities throughout the state to keep serving drinks for an extra two hours a day as part of a pilot project -- would have negative effects on communities ``that are within driving distance of the cities where the bars (would) stay open later.''``Extending alcohol sales means more drunk drivers during early-morning commutes, more DUI crashes, more injuries and more deaths,'' Kennedy said, adding that the change would ``impact our ability to respond quickly to other emergencies.''Under SB 58, bars in Cathedral City, Coachella, Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, Palm Springs, Sacramento, San Francisco and West Hollywood would be cleared to remain open two hours longer each night.The change would affect more than three-quarters of the state's population, according to a letter sent from the police association to the author of the bill, Sen. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Unemployment in San Diego County has dropped to 14.3%, but is likely to start increasing again due to modified public health orders, a report released Wednesday by the San Diego Association of Governments found.While unemployment has slowly but steadily declined from the high of 25% the week of May 9, county health orders on Tuesday closing bars, indoor dining at restaurants and indoor business at zoos, museums, movie theaters and other businesses will likely take a toll on the region."The recent rollbacks in opening could significantly impact the food and beverage industry," SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major said. "Additionally, we could see another wave of layoffs as funding from Paycheck Protection Program loans is exhausted."Those industries told to shut down or modify business on Tuesday represent more than 160,000 jobs, or 11% of the region's pre-COVID-19 workforce.The unemployment rate before the pandemic was 3.1% and it could take many months for the economy to recover to that degree, the report said.The report also shows the geographical distribution of lost jobs and calculates unemployment rates for the five most impacted ZIP codes regionwide, including Encanto, College Area, City Heights, San Ysidro, and Logan Heights. Only Logan Heights is estimated to still have an unemployment rate above 20%. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brother and sister who own two Rancho Bernardo nail salons were arraigned Thursday on federal charges they were part of a forced labor conspiracy. Cindy Mydung Luu and Jason Luu lured their second cousin from Vietnam to San Diego in 2014 to work long hours in their salons, Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon, prosecutors said. The woman arrived on a student visa and attended Grossmont College, but applied for a spouse visa after marrying Jason Luu in 2016. Prosecutors said the siblings “engaged in a scheme intended to cause the victim to believe she would suffer financial and reputational harm if she did not continue working.” The siblings own Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon in Rancho Bernardo.“We are very grateful that this matter came to the attention of the Human Trafficking Task Force upon the suggestion and support of two caring and vigilant nail salon customers who had befriended the victim,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “With their assistance, Task Force officers were able to assist the victim immediately and to investigate these alleged crimes.” The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division also investigated the defendants’ nail salon for minimum wage and overtime violations, according to prosecutors.The Luu’s were arrested at their home in Tierrasanta Thursday morning.
