SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Rapid Response Network (SDRRN) gave 10News an exclusive look inside the shelter where they help asylum seekers daily. The location of the shelter is kept private to protect the migrants. Rapid Response usually houses people for 24 to 48 hours. When migrants first arrive, they see a doctor the go to an intake room where volunteers help make travel arrangements with family members already inside the U.S. The migrants are fed three times a day and are each given a full set of clothing. Sometimes, the network even funds their travel plans. Volunteers at the shelter tell 10News they are running out of resources to continue helping. They want city, county and state officials to step in and help. In the meantime, they are relying on donations from the community. They've set up a GoFund Me campaign and a travel fund for the migrants who need help with transportation. The city tells 10News they are exploring all options to help.Tuesday, the asylum claims of six Hondurans were accepted for processing, ending a 17-hour standoff, according to the Associated Press. The asylum seekers arrived at the crossing Monday afternoon but after several hours in the U.S., inspectors agreed to process claims of eight unaccompanied children and a mother with her five children. Six more weren’t initially allowed into the country and sat on blanket through the night before authorities processed their claims. The impasse highlighted a U.S. practice to limit entry for asylum seekers at official crossings when they are at full capacity, which it calls "metering" or "queue management." 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. They were riding in a helicopter that crashed in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on country's northern border at 8:35 p.m. Sunday (2:35 a.m. ET), Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement posted on its website."A rescue team was dispatched immediately and they arrived at the Central Island at around 11:20 p.m. and located the wreckage at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors," Kenya's aviation chief Gilbert Kibe said.READ: Pilot, 4 Americans killed in helicopter crash in KenyaStaff at Stapper's graphics company near Mission Hills told 10News that they learned Sunday evening the self-made entrepreneur was killed in the accident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people gathered in Balboa Park to support those living with Alzheimer’s disease.The annual “Walk for Alz” is one of the biggest Alzheimer’s awareness events in San Diego. Ken Darling has been participating in the event for the last 10 years.“My mom has passed but, I keep coming back to say thank you to an organization that helps other people going through this disease," Darling said.The Walk for Alz is put on by Alzheimer’s San Diego. The organization offers free resources to caregivers and family members of people in need.“It’s a family disease,” says Eugenia Welch, President of Alzheimer’s San Diego. “It effects so much more than just the person who is diagnosed because the whole family has to adjust their way of life to make sure that person is safe.”About 84,000 people in San Diego County are currently living with Alzheimer’s or another Dementia.
