SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Family, friends and fellow Airmen gathered to pay a final salute to a San Diego Air Force pilot killed in a training accident last month. Second Lieutenant Travis Wilkie was buried with full military honors today at Miramar National Cemetery. It was a somber scene as a horse-drawn carriage arrived with the casket carrying the 23-year-old graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Wilkie's parents, sister, and new wife, Peyton looked on as members of the Base Honor Guard escorted the flag-draped coffin. Two T-38 Talon jets were landing in formation when something went wrong. Wilkie excelled in everything he did. He was a standout baseball player and honors student at La Jolla Country Day School. He continued playing ball and setting records at the Air Force Academy. He graduated from the academy in 2018 and was just weeks away from getting his wings, according to a statement by the family. Wilkie and his girlfriend had just married in October. Peyton is also in the Air Force. Military officials say it could be a couple of months before they know what caused the crash. 1308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For more than three hours, two women were trapped inside a downtown San Diego elevator.Fire crews were called to the Copley Symphony Hall at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after the elevator stopped as it took the women to the 34th floor.A Battalion Chief said the women felt a jolt and the elevator's lights flicker before it came to a stop.Rescuers were able to reach the women at about 11 p.m., more than three hours later. Until then, the women Facetimed a friend to stay calm, but a friend was worried they would run out of air or suffer from heat related injuries."Once I learned that they pried the doors open because it was so hot in there, what else could I do but just wait?" Kalani Creutzberg said. "It turned into a waiting game. And I'm just very very fortunate that there's a happy ending to this."Both women were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk.They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought.There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends are grieving the loss of a young man killed in a South Bay crash that also sent five teenagers to the hospital. "This is like a bad dream and I want to wake up," said Ivan Nares.Nares says he got a heart-stopping call from his brother Gustavo, 18, from the emergency room Wednesday morning."He said, 'Ivan, Ivan, I need you. Please come,'" said Nares.RELATED: Driver killed in Otay Mesa SR-905 crash, several others injuredNares rushed to San Diego from his Tijuana home. His brother was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 packed with teens after a night at an indoor trampoline park.The CHP says around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the car was headed south on State Route 905 going at a high rate of speed when it hit the center divide near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp. The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.Three males and two females, ranging from 15- to 19-years-old, were rushed to hospitals. Among them was Nares' brother, who suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs. He is uninsured. Gustavo is an amateur boxer and a recent graduate of San Ysidro High. He was in the process of applying to college. Instead, he faces a tough road to recovery."The advice give to all the people, especially young people is don't drive like you are in a 'Fast and Furious' movie. Be cautious.
