SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fishing shop in Kearny Mesa was burglarized early Sunday morning. The break-in was caught on the San Diego Tackle Traders' surveillance cameras just before 4:30 a.m. The video shows two suspects, wearing masks and gloves, getting into the shop using a crowbar. The two people can be seen walking into the business, on Convoy Court, with a cooler and some type of container, heading towards the back of the shop. The owners of San Diego Tackle Traders say the suspects got away with several fishing reels and rods, a total value of ,000 to 0,00. The owners tell 10News this is a big blow to their small business. They say they work by appointment only and don't advertise their address online because of the value of the items they sell. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Shane Harris is a civil rights activist based in San Diego and also the president and founder of The People’s Alliance for Justice. He said after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, a conversation started among activists and he was called to go to the epicenter of the tragedy. He brought with him ,000 to donate to the Floyd family, money that was possible thanks to a match from Mark Arabo and Sam Nejabat. Harris spent the weekend following the killing in Minneapolis, meeting with other activists, leading and participating in protests, visiting the site where the killing happened and also talking to the Floyd family. He said the Floyd family impressed him with their desire to end the violence and now move forward with active change. Harris stood behind the Floyd family as they addressed the world, offering support as George Floyd’s brother spoke. “He was really focused on peace. What do we need to do to resolve these issues in America? How do we address reform moving forward? How do we put an aggressive plan together?” said Harris. Harris is returning to San Diego Tuesday evening and is bringing with him that message of active change. “Enough is enough, we need deliverables for our community. The looters and the rioters are not where the message should be focused, but it should be focused on black-led organizations and institutions that gravely need support from our allies,” said Harris. He said there are a few examples of change within the community that will make a difference. First, he cited the importance of AB 392, a bill that was inspired after the Sacramento killing of Stephon Clark by a policeman. The bill was signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom and changes police use of force policies and requires officers to attempt de-escalation prior to using lethal force. Harris said this was a topic of conversation among activists in Minneapolis involving changes that can be made in policing. Harris said the main message from the Floyd family is peace and policy, and he said there’s room for policy change with the San Diego Sheriffs Department. He’s calling on the county to follow in the steps of the San Diego Police Department and ban the use of carotid restraint. "The alternative would be a use of force impact weapon, like a club, tasers — which carry with their own danger with them ... I think it's frequently confused when you see incidents like in Minneapolis." SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls.
