BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Xi Jinping's visit to Singapore, South Africa, Angola and Botswana on Nov.14-24 achieved the goals of "consolidating traditional friendship, expanding strategic mutual trust, deepening substantial cooperation and boosting common development," Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said Wednesday.The visit, which was conducted on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, has been given prominence by local and international media, Zhai said.During the visit, Xi exchanged views with the heads of states and governments and parliament leaders of the four nations and summed up the experience and achievements in the development of their bilateral ties.He met with people from all walks of life and attended a series of signing ceremonies of bilateral cooperative agreements on trade, energy, finance and culture, Zhai said.Xi also addressed a reception marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore and gave a speech at the opening ceremony of a seminar on the 10th anniversary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.During a stopover in Spain's Balearic Island Mallorca on his way home, Xi met Spanish Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez with whom he exchanged views on China-Spain and China-Europe relations.The Chinese vice president also met with representatives from local embassies, Chinese enterprises, Chinese medical teams and overseas Chinese people and students.Great achievements have been made during Xi's visit which was compact but effective and pragmatic, Zhai said.

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged family planning workers to make more contributions to the long-term balance of the country's population to pave the way for economic and social development.Li made the remarks Friday after meeting with representatives from the China Family Planning Association.Li noted that China's population was experiencing continuous increasing and aging, and limited resources and environments were holding back the country's development more than ever.Li urged family planning workers to pay more attention to the population's quality, structure and distribution, and boost the country's reproductive health in order to transform population pressures into human resources.Founded in 1980, the association is a non-profit, non-governmental organization working in the field of reproductive health and family planning. It has some 94 million members.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will adopt tough water management measures in the next five years to ease acute water shortages, according to local water authorities.The measures include setting warning lines for the quantity of water consumption, efficiency of water use and water pollution levels within the metropolitan area, Bi Xiaogang, spokesman with the Beijing Water Authority, was quoted as saying by Monday's Beijing Daily.Local governments would be punished if they missed the targets, he said, adding it was the first time that such measures had been formulated.The measures, which were still being drafted by the municipal government, will be implemented during the first half of 2011, Bi was quoted as saying.Beijing has been plagued by drought for 12 years in a row, during which its per capita amount of water resources has been nearly halved to about 150 cubic meters.With nearly 20 million residents and more than 4.7 million vehicles, the metropolis has a water resource deficit of 400 million cubic meters, although it transferred 320 million cubic meters of water from neighboring Hebei Province last year.
