As the holiday season approaches, organizers for the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration said this year’s festivities will be “virtually enhanced” and very different. This year, the celebration will bring Times Square and The Ball to the audience digitally, no matter where they are.A scaled back and socially distanced live production is still being determined."People all over the globe are ready to join New Yorkers in welcoming in the new year with the iconic Ball Drop. I commend the Times Square Alliance, Jamestown Properties, and Countdown Entertainment on finding a safe, creative and innovative way for all of us to continue to celebrate this century old-tradition. A new year means a fresh start, and we’re excited to celebrate,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.“One thing that will never change is the ticking of time and the arrival of a New Year at midnight on December 31st,” said Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, which co-produces the event with Countdown Entertainment.“Because any opportunity to be live in Times Square will be pre-determined and extremely limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be the opportunity to participate virtually wherever you are. Because more than ever in these divided and fear-filled times, the world desperately needs to come together symbolically and virtually to celebrate the people and things we love and to look forward with a sense of renewal and new beginnings,” Tompkins added.Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many events have been canceled or modified to fight the spread of the virus. The New Year’s Eve Times Square ball drop, which typically brings millions of people together in Manhattan, is no different.Earlier this month, the mayor and Macy's announced the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade will be "reinvented" with virtual aspects. The Macy's Fourth of July fireworks were also modified into smaller fireworks displayed before a grand show was aired on television. He was a former cop with a little-known story of infiltrating the KKK back in the 1970’s, until an Oscar-winning film thrust him into the national spot light. Now, Ron Stallworth’s story is known to many. “I never imagined anything like this happening when I began this, writing this book,” Stallworth says. “I just want to tell a story.”And Stallworth’s real life meets today's real life. The movie BlacKkKlansman ends with real footage from the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, as well as President Donald Trump’s comments afterwards, saying there were “very find people on both sides.” Stallworth believes the president's words are, in part, why his story still resonates so much today. “He had an opportunity to be the moral conscience of this country in that precise defined moment, and he chose to equate hate with non-violent protesters,” Stallworth says. Stallworth views today's alt-right protesters in the same light as KKK members of decades past. “The alt-right doesn't sport white hoods and white sheets. They wear suit coats. They look like business people,” he says. “They don't have the stereotypical image of the southern racists that many of us grew up grew up on in the movie.” That's why he believes diversity in law enforcement, and connection with the community, is more important now than ever. “If you have a systemic evil in an organization like racism, one of the best ways to fight it is to become part of the organization fight it from within,” Stallworth says. “And that's what I was doing back at back in the day. That's where a lot of people are doing these days.” 1639

Lending a helping hand is what Stephen Peth loves to do. Peth spends a lot of his time in the rehabilitation unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, helping wounded warriors get back on their feet. "The job is basically to do whatever we can to help the therapist," Peth explains. At 72 years old, Peth couldn't imagine any other way to spend his time. “I could be out on a golf course doing something for me, but to be here and be working for these wonderful service people that are here for a variety of reasons, to me, that’s inspirational,” he says. Peth says he’s inspired by all the patients he sees, because, he too, was once a warrior wounded in combat. "This is the boot that I was wearing the day that I got shot," he says. In 1967, 11 months into his tour during the Vietnam War, Peth, an army rescue helicopter pilot, was attacked by gunfire. "We took 39 hits on the aircraft,” he recalls. “I took a round through my boot and took a round though my arm." That dangerous mission earned him one of the highest awards of valor. "Gen. Craton Abrams came out and pinned a Silver Star on me," he says. His award and scars serve as reminders that he was once where these war heroes are now, compelling him find a way to serve his country once more. 1305
