SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Donald Trump issued an order prohibiting Broadcom’s attempt to take over San Diego-based Qualcomm, CNBC and Bloomberg reported Monday.Broadcom had made several efforts to buy the chip maker in recent months. All offers were rejected by Qualcomm, which said the bids undervalued the company. The most recent offer, made in February, was over 1 billion. The possible takeover raised security concerns and led to an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S.The takeover attempts coincided with changes in corporate leadership. On Friday, Qualcomm announced executive Paul Jacobs -- the son of Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs - "will no longer serve in an executive management capacity" but "will continue to serve on the Qualcomm Board."If Broadcom had been allowed to buy Qualcomm, it would have made the Singapore-based firm the world’s third-largest chip company behind Intel and Samsung.Any buyout would also have had a significant impact on San Diego's economy. 1042

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Palomar College has placed its president on leave pending an investigation. The college district announced Wednesday that Superintendent and President Joi Lin Blake was placed on paid leave following a report warning of the college district's fiscal instability.“It is my request that we all respect the privacy of all parties at this time. Doing so will allow us to focus on the important work of the District. Together, we will remain focused on student success, our response to the FCMAT report and building toward a successful spring semester," Kahn wrote in a release.RELATED:San Marcos parents sound off against superintendent's hiresSan Diego State's stadium effort gets -million donationThat Nov. 8 Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) report identified several serious concerns regarding the district's fiscal health. The report cites that the college district's adopted 2019-20 budget will have a ,748,859 deficit. According to the district in the report, the 2018-19 budget had a ,220,001 deficit. The report stated that the district's salary and benefits costs "continue to increase year after year at a rate greater than revenue growth."The college district "has a high probability of fiscal insolvency in the near future" at its current pace, the report warned. The report adds that in two years the district "will have consumed all reserves and will be forced to borrow .5 million from an external source to remain solvent."The district said placing Blake on leave was not as a disciplinary action but "as a precautionary measure to protect all parties." In a corrected statement, the Palomar Community College District Board of Trustees said Assistant Superintendent and Palomar Vice President Jack Kahnh has assumed administrative responsibility of the district. An acting Superintendent/President was not named. 1877

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nearly 300 goats are munching away at brush on and around Cuyamaca College. The college contracted with Environmental Land Management and its goats to help with fire mitigation.A preserve surrounds the 165-acre campus. The goats and ELM staff and machinery will clear about 50 acres of brush in six to eight weeks. The goats are estimated to do 65 percent of the clearing work.Julianna Barnes, the President of Cuyamaca College, says the goats are a way to be pro-active during the fire season.“Usually we bring out an all-human crew with heavy machinery,” Barnes said, “but it’s actually 20 percent the cost of bringing in an all-human crew. And it’s more environmentally sound.”The goats will eat 7- to 10-percent of their body weight. Also, goats do not re-seed plant life in their excrement, according to the college.“We have a lot of non-native plants, and they’re highly flammable,” Barnes said, “(The goats) love to eat, and they love these non- native plants.” 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials have called off the search and rescue operation for eight service members who went missing after an amphibious assault vehicle accident off San Clemente Island last week. The 15th Marine Expeditionary Force said in a release Sunday that all eight members — seven Marines and one sailor — are presumed dead after it was determined, "that there was little probability of a successful rescue given the circumstances of the incident."Officials say they searched for 40 hours covering more than 1,000 square nautical miles in their efforts to find the missing service members.RELATED: Camp Pendleton Marine dies, 8 missing in training accident off San Clemente Island“It is with a heavy heart, that I decided to conclude the search and rescue effort,” said Col. Christopher Bronzi, 15th MEU Commanding Officer. “The steadfast dedication of the Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to the persistent rescue effort was tremendous.”Officials said their efforts will now turn to recovery of the missing service members. An offshore supply vessel HOS Dominator, as well as Undersea Rescue Command, are surveying the seafloor to help.“Our thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be with our Marines’ and Sailor’s families during this difficult time,” said Bronzi. “As we turn to recovery operations we will continue our exhaustive search for our missing Marines and Sailor.”RELATED: Safety examined after deadly Southern California amphibious assault vehicle accidentOn July 30, 15 Marines and one sailor were participating in the training exercise off the coast of San Clemente Island when the AAV began taking on water and sank. Of the 16 service members on board, eight Marines were rescued, one Camp Pendleton Marine died at the hospital, and two others were hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. The names of the Marines and sailor will be released 24 hours after their next of kin are notified, officials added. The USS John Finn, the USS Makin Island, the USS Somerset, and the USS San Diego all assisted in the search and rescue effort, as well as 11 U.S. Navy SH-60 helicopters, multiple Navy and Marine Corps small boats, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. 2324
