A quick burst of snow will blanket parts of the United States on Sunday, with more than 80 million people under winter weather alerts from Colorado to Maine. The storm began developing Saturday and brought snow to the Central Plains, and is expected to bring rain, snow or a wintery mix to much of the eastern United States.Snow had already started falling in the Midwest by early morning Sunday. It will move into the Ohio River Valley by midday then to the East in the afternoon and the overnight hours, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said.New York, Philadelphia, and Boston will get rain Sunday afternoon and transition to a wintry mix of snow by evening. New York will get between 4-8 inches while Boston is expecting 5-10. Philadelphia will get 2-4 inches."The system is currently forecast to move out of DC, Philadelphia and New York between midnight and 4 a.m.," Brink said. "Boston may have the worst commute as their snow will last through the morning rush hour."By Monday afternoon, the storm will move out of the Northeast, Brink said.Moving EastKansas and Missouri are expecting 2 to 4 inches of snow, and the Ohio River Valley is predicted to get up to 2 inches, according to Brink. This season has seen unusually high amounts of snowfall in many regions. Caribou, Maine was just shy of its record snowfall from the winter season 2007-2008 as of Saturday. Other areas already exceeding normal snow accumulations include Buffalo, NY, and Burlington, Vermont.Severe weather in the SouthAcross the Southeast, 14 million people are expected to see severe weather, Brink said.NWS predicts scattered tornadoes and gusts of wind in most of Central Georgia and parts of North Georgia on Sunday.Southern and eastern Alabama could also see tornadoes Sunday, Brink said. 1782

An Alaska Airlines flight from San Francisco to Philadelphia was forced to divert, all thanks to a belligerent passenger who tried twice to light up inside the cabin.Passengers boarding Alaska Airlines' red-eye flight 1138 in San Francisco were in for quite a surprise. Over halfway through the flight, they had to divert to Chicago. One of their fellow passengers tried to break one of the cardinal rules of modern air travel: do not smoke on airplanes. Then the passenger refused to comply with flight crew instructions by trying to light up a cigarette -- again.About an hour before they were supposed to land in Philadelphia, pilots were forced to divert to O'Hare International Airport."Due to a disruptive passenger onboard and out of an abundance of caution, the flight was diverted to Chicago and landed at 4:22 a.m. local time," Alaska Airlines told CNN.Chicago Police say they were asked to meet the plane because of the cigarette-lighting passenger, who "was somewhat belligerent."While the individual was escorted off the plane without incident, the diversion added an hour onto the other passengers' red-eye flight, since the plane needed refueling. It's unclear if the passenger will face any punishment for their actions. The FAA, which enforces the regulations the passenger violated, told CNN the incident is under investigation.Chicago Police say they did not make an arrest. The FBI and US Marshals tell CNN they did not make any arrest either.According to the agency's own recommendations, a flight attendant or pilot in charge should be filing a noncompliance report.CNN has asked Alaska Airlines if the crew from the flight has filed a report but has not yet received a response. 1711

A temporary truce between the United States and the Taliban has taken effect, setting the stage for the two sides to sign a peace deal next week. If successfully implemented, the weeklong "reduction in violence” agreement will be followed by the signing of the peace accord aimed at ending 18 years of war in Afghanistan and bringing U.S. troops home. That would wrap up America's longest-running conflict and fulfill one of President Donald Trump's main campaign promises. That agreement would be signed in Doha, Qatar, on February 29 and lead to the start of all-Afghan peace talks and a phased withdrawal of American troops.Photo: In this May 28, 2019 file photo, Suhail Shaheen, spokesman for the Taliban's political office in Doha, speaks to the media in Moscow, Russia. The countdown to the signing of a peace agreement between the Taliban and the United States to end the 18 years of war in Afghanistan will begin on Friday night, when the seven-day “reduction of violence" promised by the Taliban will go into effect, a senior U.S. State Department official said. An armed gang who kidnapped an American tourist and her driver at gunpoint from a Ugandan national park have made frequent demands for a 0,000 ransom, which will not be paid, Ugandan police said Thursday."They (the abductors) continue to use cell phones of the victims to call the lodge they were staying asking for 0,000 ransom, which we will not offer," Uganda Deputy Police Spokeswoman Polly Namaye said.Police say they will intensify the hunt for the abductors instead of offering the ransom and have closed borders near where the tourist and her Ugandan driver were seized during an evening game drive on Tuesday at Queen Elizabeth National Park."We want to inform the public and all visitors in the country that the joint security teams have cut off all exit areas on the border between Uganda and the DRC in search for the victims," Namaye said.Namaye said the police and other security agencies were working with the American embassy in Kampala, Uganda's capital to rescue the hostages who police believe are still within the country. The US State Department spokesperson said its security forces were responding to the incident, but gave no further details."We are aware of reports of a US citizen kidnapped in Uganda. Security forces are responding to the incident. We have no further information to offer at this time," the spokesperson said. The American citizen was 1395
