BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 12, and 36 are still missing, the rescue headquarters said Thursday.By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, rescuers had saved 23 people from the rubble of homes in Hedong Village of Longyang District in Baoshan City, headquarters officials said at the site.The accident happened at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting on a sleep slope which had been soaked in rainfall for about ten days.More than 1,000 people have participated in the rescue operation and more than 120 medical workers are treating the injured and disinfecting the site.Tents, quilts, clothes and plenty of first-aid materials have been sent to the site where rescuers are evacuating people to safe places.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- China launched a large-scale tree-planting program against soil-erosion along the Three-Gorge Dam section of the country's largest Yangtze River Friday, with two launching ceremonies held in Beijing and Chongqing, simultaneously.The program is aimed to raise funds from individual and institutional donors for planting trees on 3.8 million mu (253,333 hectares) on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is the honorary chairman of the organizational committee of the program.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai attended and addressed the ceremony in Beijing.Hui spoke highly of the tree-planting program, saying that it would be new probe for the bio-environmental protection of major rivers in the country as well as a new, great contribution to the afforestation and protection of the Yangtze River.The vice premier recognized that the Yangtze River is still facing severe bio-environmental deterioration and soil erosion, though notable achievements have been made in the afforestation efforts along the river in the past decades.In his speech, Bo pledged that Chongqing will take three to five years to increase the forest coverage in the dam area to 65 percent, from the present 22.2 percent. Currently, soil-erosion has covered over 20,000 square kilometers, about 50 percent of the total area, he noted.According to previous reports, Chongqing plans to raise over 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U.S. dollars) from institutional and individual donors for the tree-planting program.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, announced Friday it would continue the country's moderately easy monetary policy while making it better-targeted and more flexible in the coming months of this year.The PBOC made the announcement in its report on China's financial stability, which was released on the PBOC's website.The PBOC said in the next stage it needs to skillfully handle the relationship between maintaining steady and rapid economic development, restructuring the economy and managing inflation expectations.Chinese banks should continue supporting the country's economic restructuring, guard against risks, change profit structures, and improve the capital replenishing and restriction mechanism, the central bank said in the announcement.The announcement noted that local government debt was rising quickly, corporate liquidity was decreasing with a high current debt ratio, and credit card advances were increasing despite mounting financial assets held by residents and the low debt level.It said the global financial crisis had revealed limitations and gaps in the existing regulatory system. To prevent systemic risks, the central bank would combine macro and micro-prudential supervision in its policy package.
