BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese central authorities have stressed the promotion of honesty and uprightness among the public, especially government officials, in enhancing clean governance and anti-corruption drive.     It is imperative to foster and carry forward the merit of honesty and uprightness, and officials should have the awareness of using power justly and pursue clean-fingered work style, according to suggestions on clean governance put forward by six central government departments.     The six departments also urged to strengthen education on the public about the value of honesty and cleanness combining social morality, professional ethics, family virtues and personal moral character.     It is stressed that anti-corruption should be a subject that is reflected in literature works, films and TV dramas, as well as newspapers and magazines, books, and electronic products.     The suggestions were jointly issued by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Ministry of Supervision, Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Culture, State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the General Administration of Press and Publication.

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will meet here Wednesday with US President Barack Obama, who is on his first state visit to China since his January inauguration.     They will have a working lunch before Obama's sightseeing visit to the Great Wall in the north suburb of the Chinese capital, which will be another chance for the US head of state, who toured the Imperial Palace Tuesday, to learn more about the ancient Chinese civilization.     Obama will conclude his fist visit to China and fly to the Republic of Korea, the last leg of his four-state Asian tour, in the afternoon.     He arrived in China's economic hub Shanghai Sunday night to kick off this visit as guest of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.     Hu held talks with him in Beijing on Tuesday and they met international reporters for about 40 minutes after the talks, both pledging to further bilateral ties.     Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo also met Obama on Tuesday, several hours before a state banquet in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the two sides spoke highly of the tremendous development achieved since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago and reached consensus on further bilateral ties. 

LANGFANG, Hebei Province, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Friday urged Party committees and governments at all levels to make issues related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers top priority of their agenda and called for increased investment in these areas.     During a visit to villages in China's northern Hebei Province Friday, Hu called for efforts to develop modern agriculture by relying on the progress of science and technology and make sure that farmers have increasing incomes.     The president said this year's No. 1 document of the CPC Central Committee will include a batch of new policies to support agricultural development.     Hu spent time inquiring about the livelihood of local farmers and conveyed New Year greetings to them. HOHHOT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police said Tuesday they had shot and killed an escaped prisoner and apprehended three others in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     The four escaped on Saturday from the No. 2 Prison in Hohhot, capital of Inner Mongolia, after killing a prison guard, said a spokesman from the regional public security department.     Acting on information from local residents, police surrounded the men in Helin County early Tuesday, after they had hijacked a motor tricycle and taken the woman driver hostage.     Police shot dead Gao Bo, who resisted arrest and injured a police officer with knife, said the spokesman. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Wednesday voiced strong opposition against the United States' imposition of anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese oil well pipes, saying the move was "discriminatory."     The United States made a decision Tuesday to impose duties ranging from 10.36 percent to 15.78 percent on Chinese oil well pipes for alleged unfair subsidies.     "China is strongly opposed to the U.S. move of continuing with its discriminatory measures and arbitrarily raising the anti-subsidy duty rates," said Yao Jian, spokesman of the MOC.     Yao reiterated that the United States should live up to its promise made at the G20 Summit and the consensus reached earlier by leaders of the two countries to fight trade protectionism.     Earlier this month, the U.S. Commerce Department also slapped preliminary anti-dumping tariffs on the pipe up to 99 percent based on the allegation that "Chinese producers/exporters have sold OCTG (oil country tubular goods) in the United States at prices ranging from zero to 99.14 percent less than normal value."     Customs data showed that pipes involved were worth 3.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, taking up 46 percent of the total amount of Chinese steel products exported to the United States (6.9 billion dollars).     More than 90 companies were affected, including major steel companies like Baosteel, Tianjin Pipe and Ansteel.
