DENVER — A prominent Denver realtor was fired by RE/MAX for removing Black Lives Matter signs from yards in her neighborhood.Denice Reich has sold home across Denver for more than three decades. The affluent realtor lives in the city's Hilltop neighborhood.A neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, released screenshots from the social media app NextDoor that show Reich removing Black Lives Matter signs. The anonymous NextDoor user posted on the app, saying that the incident happened on Aug. 1 around 6:30 a.m. He claims Reich had six to eight signs in her SUV.On Wednesday, Reich admitted she removed two Black Lives Matter signs, one from her neighbor next door and another from a neighbor across the street. She added that she returned the signs three hours later.She said in a phone interview that the signs were as offensive as “KKK” signs and called the Black Lives Matter movement a “terrorist organization” out to destroy America. Reich said she apologized to her neighbors, but was not sorry for standing up against what she referred to as an anti-Semitic organization she found highly offensive. DENVER -- A dramatic spike in calls to the Colorado suicide prevention hotline could be tied, in part, to a popular song with a powerful message that is reaching a new group of people.Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners reports an almost 40-percent increase in Lifeline calls from June to October of 2017 (from 1,990 calls to 2,772), and they believe much of the increase can be credited to the rapper Logic's suicide prevention anthem “1-800-273-8255,” named after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline."We see spikes for different reasons during the year, but this clearly was one we're pretty clear was triggered by the released of this song," said Bev Marquez, the CEO of Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners, which handles all the calls to that hotline number from Colorado area codes. "Because I'm a clinician and because I'm a CEO, I thought this is a great opportunity. And then I thought: staffing."In part, because of the increase in call volume, Marquez said, RMCP is increasing training and hiring 2.5 more positions in the next training group, going from 14 to 16.5.The song begins from the perspective of someone calling the number and saying that they "don't want to be alive" and follows that person from despair to hope. Counselors said the message was consistent with what they're hearing from the people who call in, and they credit the song with saving lives."I have one call that really stuck out to me. It was a 17-year-old who was having a lot of anxiety and had been in a crisis situation for a week," said Lindsey Breslin, a crisis line supervisor. "I said, 'What brought you to call today?' And he said, 'I've been listening to this song over and over again for the past week. And I decided today I should call in.' And we were able to get him the help he needed."The video for the popular song has more than 137 million views on YouTube.Counselors have said the message resonates with a new demographic that hasn't been targeted in the past, but is particularly vulnerable to suicide risks."I have noticed a lot of these Lifeline calls are specifically from teens and young adults," said Charissa Tvrdy, a lead clinician with Rocky Mountain Crisis Partners. "Even when it first came out people were like I just heard it for the first time. I've been feeling this exact same way. I wasn't sure where to go, but now I know there is an option for me."With the spike in real calls, though, RMCP has also seen a spike in prank calls referencing the song, which they say has taken time from people who really need help."Colorado ranks 7th in the nation in terms of our suicide rates," said Marquez. DENVER, Colo. — It's no secret, rent in Colorado isn't cheap. Many people seek out a roommate just to cover the cost of living. However, sometimes roommates have major disagreements. One major point of contention often involves the use of marijuana in the home."If I want to smoke a lot of weed I don’t think that’s an issue," said Damion Green.Finding roommates with his mentality hasn't been easy for Green."I’ve been through hell with people. People who insist you smoke outside, people that freak out about paraphernalia sitting around," Green says of his issues with prior roommates.That's why Angeliki Gousetis created 420 Friendly Apartments — a Facebook group connecting fellow marijuana smokers who are looking for roommates with similar interests.The group doesn't find a place to rent. Dan Garfield, an attorney who specializes in cannabis law, says "it’s just as difficult to find a weed-friendly landlord as it is to find a tobacco-friendly landlord." And if you do find one, Garfield says, Be prepared to pay a larger security deposit.""There’s no worry that I’m a professional and because I’m in finance, I can’t be 420-friendly, so if, God forbid, somebody sees me, I have to hide myself. There’s no hiding. Just be yourself," said Gousetis, a New York realtor.She started the same group in New York before creating one in Denver over the summer. More than 3,000 people have already joined, including Green, who posted to the group he was in need of a place to live. He says within a matter of days, he found his new roommates.Gousetis says she's helped connect people in 25 states. She calls them bud-mates. The group is free to use. DENVER, Co. -- The COVID-19 pandemic is not impacting all communities equally. Studies show minority neighborhoods are being hit hardest. From higher mortality rates to unequal access to care, African American, Latino and Native American communities are being impacted in higher numbers.One doctor said the virus is exposing racial inequities in our health care system and widening the gap in services between racial groups.“Racism makes all of us sick,” said Dr. Rhea Boyd, a pediatrician and health advocate. “COVID-19 has exposed some underlying racial health inequalities that have long existed in this country.”Boyd has dedicated her life to understanding these inequities and creating solutions to fight them. She said now, these solutions are more important than ever. She delivered testimony to the House Congressional Committee on Energy and Commerce on these inequalities and how to address. them.“African Americans have lower access to every health care service in this country, except amputation. Just think about that,” she said.Boyd said the first issue is minorities have, especially during the pandemic, is less access to affordable insurance and medical care.“More than half of black folks in this country lost their jobs because of COVID-19, and along with Latin communities, that means we have a huge group of folks who don’t have affordable access to health care,” she said.Dr. Boyd says that disparity also exists in mortality rates. African Americans between 35 and 44 years old are nine times more likely to die from COVID-19 than white adults the same age.“The mortality gaps for COVID-19 are actually worse in relatively young people,” she said.National county data shows that those who live in predominantly non-white communities are six times more likely to die from the virus than those who live in predominantly white communities.Boyd said her research shows these higher minority mortality rates can come from a list of reasons. One of the most important: access to clean water.“We know that Black and Latino households are 2.5 times more likely to have unclean water in their households than white households,” she said. Native American households are 19 times less likely to have clean water than white households, according to Boyd.“At a time when hand washing is the most profound and simple public health intervention, we have a disproportionate distribution of clean water,” she said.Boyd said protection on the job is another reason more minorities are ending up in the ER with COVID-19.“Essential workers tended to be folks of color and particularly women of color, and because they didn’t have in their industries access to PPE, their work became a source of exposure, and contributed to the racial inequities we saw in this pandemic,” said Boyd.Boyd said the deepest and hardest to cure infection: discrimination. “The stress of discrimination comes from the stress of insecurity,” Boyd explained. “Not knowing where your next paycheck will come from, where your next meal will come from, or if your family is safe when they leave your home—all of those things are increased threats folks of color face not because of things they’re doing. It’s because of how they’re treated because of their race and ethnicity.”Those stresses have physical consequences. “That increases harmful hormones, like cortisol, that makes you sick. It contributes to things like heart disease, high blood pressure and mental health issues like depression and Alzheimer’s,” said Boyd.In the short term, Boyd said these harmful inequities can be fought by: mandatory mask wearing and more widespread testing.“If we were able to have a better understanding of who is most affected, where and when, you could target intervention to those groups,” she said. “It would save resources, it would be time efficient.”In the long term, she believes universal health care and more help from employers can even the playing field for minorities.“We can do better than we’re doing and it’s going to take all of us pitching it to make that happen,” she said.For more information on Dr. Boyd’s research, visit these resources. 4134

(KGTV) - The COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns are impacting cities across San Diego, and the seaside village of Del Mar is no different.Alex and William Rhett opened a childrens' book store in Del Mar a year ago."The pandemic killed us as a business, but the community brought us back, and here we are," said Alex.The couple just opened Sandcastle Tales at its new location in the Del Mar Plaza."We feel overwhelmed, excited, happy what else very, very thankful," said Alex.The bookstore and the just-opened School of Rock are part of an effort to attract younger crowds to the plaza, located at 1555 Camino Del Mar"You just can't apply the same old formula that you had before, so you have to get a new mix of tenants, a new synergistic group of people that bring a variety of age groups to the plaza," said Patty Brutten.Patty and Marc Brutten spent roughly forty-million dollars buying the plaza in 2017."The successes have been very few and far between. It's been a long hard road," said Patty.Competition from One Paseo, Flower Hill Promenade, and online retail has made it tough to attract new tenants."I don't think anyone else would have stuck with it like we do just because we live here, we're community members," said Patty.Since the pandemic hit, some businesses have closed their doors. Lorna Jane, an athletic apparel recently closed. Prep Kitchen is closed just up the street, and a newly opened barbershop is no longer operating. But two new restaurants are moving into the plaza. Outdoor concerts on the deck continue to be popular. "We really hope everyone can really rediscover the plaza," said Patty.City leaders say retail and restaurants are struggling, but the most significant hit came when the San Diego County Fair was canceled, and the horse races went on without spectators. "Biggest loss is sales tax from the fairgrounds, and that's close to a million dollars," said Del Mar City Councilman Dave Druker. The city has benefited though from an increase in people at the beach."The beaches have been extremely busy. Instead of 10,000 we're getting closer to 40,000 on a weekend," said Druker.Back at Sandcastle Tales, the owners are grateful for another chance."I feel like one of the best opportunities I have ever had, and we want to give back," said Rhett.
