SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- New SANDAG and San Diego County statistics show an alarming number of San Diegans of color are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. "You have made a contribution to our community, and we want you to stay healthy.""The elected officials will then shoulder the obligation to take their recommendations and suggestions and translate them into policies that can be introduced for a vote to make the change real," Fletcher added.A newly released SANDAG report found that when compared to the white population, Black and Hispanic people are more than four times more likely to live in areas that have been impacted both by COVID-19 and unemployment.New San Diego County numbers show that while Hispanics and Latinos make up 34% of the county population, they account for 67% of the county's positive coronavirus cases."Not one community needs the testing, tracing, and treatment," JoAnn Fields with API initiative said. "But it needs to be on an equal level so that we are all protected as a whole community."The task force hopes to close the understanding, trust, access, and resource gap felt by people of color, in a proactive way. For example, even before a coronavirus vaccine comes out, they plan to have resource materials available in various languages and create policies that will distribute vaccines in heavily impacted zip codes."[We will try] to come up with messaging to the communities that we represent so that when the vaccine does become available, we will maybe get better compliance," Southeast San Diego physician, Dr. Rodney Hood, said.The public is welcome to join the task force's first Zoom meeting on June 24, 2020, at 4 PM. 2391

(KFTV) - Former NFL player Steve Weatherford is putting his best foot forward to help Feeding San Diego this holiday season.The Super Bowl Champion Punter donated more than ,000 to help fund a school pantry for a full month."I feel like it's an honor and a privilege to team up with Feeding San Diego and leverage my blessings to let them know we have some food for you and we also care," he said as Weatherford helped distribute food at Central Elementary on December 20th.Feeding San Diego's school pantry program runs distributions at 40 schools across the city. They focus on giving families fresh food, as opposed to processed packaged items.Weatherford says that's one of the reasons he was drawn to the program."Being in fitness and being a professional athlete, I understand you're only going to be able to perform as well as the fuel you put inside your body," he says.Weatherford also brought his daughters, Carney and Aurora, to help volunteer at the distribution."I've got five kids," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Wall Street set a record last week for the longest "Bull" run in US Stock Market history, topping 3,400 days of growth. Now, financial experts are saying it won't last forever and advising clients to prepare for a downturn."You have to expect at some point, we're due," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "I think everybody's almost forgotten, look at earlier in the year, how sharp the markets broke back in February. So it wouldn't be unusual to see any of those declines coming up later this year or early next year."Brewster says he doesn't expect anything as drastic as 2008, but he still says investors should take a few steps to safeguard their earnings and even make the downturn work in your favor.A lot of it, he says, depends on how close you are to retirement."When you look at the year to year returns, they're all over the board. When you look at the 20-30 year returns they're very close," says Brewster. "If you're younger and have 20-30 year horizons, the day to day gyrations are almost noise to you. But if you're getting closer to retirement or in retirement, then you have to be more careful."'Brewster looked up numbers from the S&P 500 for the last 20 years. He says someone who invested ,000 in 1998 would have lost about ,300 after the crash in 2008. But if they kept their money in until 2018, that same ,000 investment would now be worth more than ,000.He says older investors should be more conservative with their portfolios. Younger investors should increase how much they invest if the market falls, to take advantage of lower prices.As for when the correction could come, Brewster says it's too tough to predict. But he says to watch out for "triggering" events that could rattle the market, some of which may already be happening. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego County barely avoided falling back into the purple tier of the state’s reopening system, staying in the red for now.The color-coded tier system has been difficult for many business owners to deal with as they wonder if they will face more restrictions in the coming weeks.“We are working with the state to share our concerns and thoughts about the metrics they are using to put our county in the different tiers,” said Greg Cox, San Diego County Supervisor. "The reality is we remain at risk of being moved to the more restrictive tier in the future if we don’t do those things that we know we need to do.”Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said she and other health officers across the state have been pushing for the state to improve its metrics system to go beyond case rate and positivity rate.She would like to see three things happen.“If counties are maintaining hospitalizations and hospital capacities to somehow get credit for that, and also get credit for contact tracing,” she said.Wooten said the county should also get credit for providing access to COVID-19 testing in vulnerable communities hit the hardest.“San Diego has done an excellent job to date of getting access to testing in those communities that are hit the hardest,” she said.On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors passed a motion in a 4 to 1 vote to send a letter to the state backing Wooten’s effort in revising the reopening criteria.Wooten is urging members of the public to continue wearing a facial covering, washing hands, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when sick, especially as flu season is on the way.“We do not have a vaccine for COVID-19, but we have a vaccine for the flu,” she said. “Getting the flu vaccine is the most important step in preventing the flu.” 1822
