SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Though the academic school year begins Monday, most UC San Diego students have a few more days before they have to log onto their online classes. But, that’s not the only changes students are dealing with this semester.Student Anthony Sanchez said nothing seems normal this semester. Going into his second year, he’s adapting to changes the university has made to try and prevent the spread of the coronavirus on campus.“I understand why they have to do it and I understand and agree with it. But from the student perspective, I’m 19, and it’s not really a fun thing to go through right now,” Sanchez said.Ninety percent of UC San Diego classes will be held virtually, and there will be many students like Sanchez that will be logging on from campus housing. He’s hoping this semester will go a lot smoother than last semester.Sanchez added, “This fall, I’m expecting it to be better in terms of how it’s structured. Because a lot of teachers were going on the fly and setting up lectures and scheduling as it was going. I’m expecting it to be more organized.”Sanchez told ABC 10News that the school was organized when it came to students moving into campus housing. There were about 7,500 students that returned to campus.The move-in days were spread out over 10 days to space people out. Each student could only bring two people to help them move.Each student was also given a coronavirus test, and Sanchez said he got his results within 48 hours.To help control the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the university also launched a voluntary program that utilizes smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed.As for Sanchez, and what’s ahead for this fall quarter, he said he’ll just work on following the rules and saying positive to get through the year.“I guess I’m just going to have to make it the best that I can with what I can. It should be interesting,” Sanchez said.As far as testing, all students that live in on-campus housing and those that attend classes on campus are required to get tested for the coronavirus twice a month. 2092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were rescued from atop the border wall in San Diego Sunday evening, Border Patrol said Tuesday. According to a news release, agents spotted three people perched on top of the wall near Otay Mesa around midnight January 5. A man and two women reportedly tried to enter the U.S. illegally by climbing the wall amid dense fog. “The trio became stuck at the top of the wet, slippery wall after smugglers abandoned them,” the agency said. Border Patrol says all three people, a 36-year-old man, 20-year-old woman and 18-year-old woman, were Mexican Nationals. All three were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Unified School District, one of the state's largest districts, begins the new school year online Monday.Even though California has given both private and public schools in San Diego County the green light to reopen schools on Tuesday, Sept. 1, SD Unified officials say for now they will stick with distance learning.The district's online instruction plan includes:A six-hour school day with customized learning experiences for each K-12 studentAll students will have daily, live interaction with their teachers via video conferencingCustom learning experiences will be based on student needs and will include daily live, online instruction (up to three hours), independent learning (at least two hours), working with other students in small groups or participating in educator office hours (at least one hour)All Elementary students will receive instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and the artsStudents will receive grades to measure their progressSome children who have faced learning challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic may be offered appointments for in-person sessions, which could begin as soon as late September, according to the district."The teacher will of course try various interventions teaching strategies online, but if the teacher comes to the conclusion that this student would benefit from in-person interventions, then the teacher will reach out to the family," said San Diego Education Association President Kisha Borden.Students will be identified by their teachers for participation based on several factors: Students who had below standard marks on their spring 2020 report cards, special education students who did not meet IEP goals, and special education students with intense support needs.The district says this option will not be offered immediately and will take teachers a few weeks to make these assessments. 1940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year, December Nights organizers are opting for a tasty, food-driven event in place of the traditional two-night gathering in Balboa Park."Taste of December Nights" will feature more than 20 food trucks and vendors in Balboa Park, inviting visitors to enjoy a delicious drive-thru event this year. The event will be held from Friday, Dec. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.The event is free to attend, but visitors must remain in the vehicles and wear face coverings. Organizers say walk-ups, or people attending on bikes or scooters will not be allowed, as safety protocols amid the pandemic will be enforced.The food truck event will roll into the park's Inspiration Point parking lot, near President's Way and Park Blvd.The event will also feature some giveaways for visitors, including a commemorative Taste of December Nights tote bag filled with some festive items for the first 500 cars each day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Veteran's Day hundreds gathered at the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, honoring those who've selflessly served and sacrificed for the nation.Wayne Thompson, who served in the Navy for 30 years, says he attends the Mt. Soledad ceremony every year.“This world would be a lot different if we didn’t have the people that are on this wall. If they didn’t give their lives for the people in this country," said Thompson.Thompson did three tours in Vietnam and now suffers from health complications due to Agent Orange. He's had 11 seizures but says he would serve all over again if asked.“I kept wanting to serve, I don’t know, I just felt like I was doing something for the country, it’s hard to understand, but you get a fulfillment out of serving somebody," said Thompson.He says he's grateful for those who served before him and those serving now.Col.
