COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman arrested for dumping puppies in a trash can in Coachella was sentenced to a year in jail, according to KABC. Deborah Sue Culwell, 59, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment charges. Culwell was arrested after surveillance video captured a white jeep pull up behind a store on the 49000 block of Grapefruit Boulevard as a woman exited with a plastic bag. The video then shows the woman dumping the bag between trash cans.RELATED: Woman caught on video dumping bag of puppies in CoachellaInside the bag were seven puppies, all about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes.An employee at the store contact animal services after a passerby discovered the bag next to the .“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” Department of Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer said. “His actions were humane and heroic.”“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Mayer added. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. Corporate America is coming to Wall Street's rescue.The Dow soared?548 points, or 2.2%, on Tuesday as investors cheered fat profits from major companies and relative calm in the bond market. The huge rally, the Dow's best day since March, helped the index recover a chunk of last week's hefty losses.Tech stocks, the biggest losers during the market turmoil, raced back to life. The Nasdaq spiked nearly 3%, while the S&P 500 advanced 2.2%.Investors piled back into tech darlings. Amazon, Facebook and Netflix closed sharply higher."It's a bounce back after an overdone situation last week," said David Joy, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial.Market sentiment was lifted by earnings beats from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Johnson & Johnson. Adobe and UnitedHealth added to the good news by offering upbeat guidance for 2019.Taken together, the corporate report cards underscore the ability of businesses to cash in on the strong US economy. And the results should ease fears about the US-China trade war."We're focusing back on fundamentals," said Dan Suzuki, portfolio strategist at Richard Bernstein Advisors. Suzuki called Tuesday's rally a "reflexive rebound."Last week, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all suffered their worst week since March. At one point, the Dow plummeted more than 1,000 points in just two trading days.Despite Tuesday's advance, all three major indexes remain firmly in the red for the month.One major source of investor nervousness has improved: bond yields. A sudden spike in 10-year Treasury rates above 3.25% spooked markets. The rapid climb in rates was driven by the strong economy, the surging federal deficit?and concerns about a more aggressive Federal Reserve.Investors feared higher borrowing costs that could slow growth and sudden competition for the stock market from boring bonds.But Treasury rates, which move in the opposite direction of prices, eased late last week as investors poured cash into the safety of government bonds. COVID-19 has boosted a number of essential and online businesses to the point where they need to hire hundreds of people. Now, some of these companies are getting creative with hiring during the pandemic."This is about actionality and giving everyone whatever ways that are necessary to them to be able to find work. Our teams have been trying to come up with creative ways to connect people and work," said Carl Schweihs, the president of PeopleManagement at TrueBlue, a national staffing company that helps businesses, big and small.Schweihs says their team decided to try out a drive-thru hiring event. TrueBlue is running the events through its Staff Management |SMX business."We did one of these in April in Pennsylvania, and we saw a lot of success, so we were able to hire about as many people in one day as we had done in a week in the past," said Schweihs.The company saw so much success that True Blue decided to offer the drive-thru service to other clients, as well."We saw a lot of people were interested in it. They weren’t used to necessarily video interviewing and there was a comfort factor in still being close to someone, still being able to ask questions, that just weren’t there on the video side," explained Schweihs.How it works is applicants fill out all of their information ahead of time online. Then, True Blue schedules certain times for people to drive up and interview through their car window. Schweihs says they're able to interview more candidates in less time."Another thing is, we do interviews on all of our jobs and I think it also shows, especially in warehousing and distribution jobs attendance is a big issue, so by people being able to show up to an interview at a scheduled time, it also gives comfort in us and our customers that they're going to show up and be in attendance when they actually do take the job," said Schweihs.Drive-thru hiring is gaining ground across the country. In California, the Tulare County Employment Connection is hosting its first drive-thru event to fill 40 electrical and solar installation positions."I'm a little bit old fashioned. I like the face-to-face, and I know a lot of people do. Just the safety matter of it right now during the pandemic, following safety guidelines, I think it's a very good idea to be able to drive through and make it quick, where there's not very much contact, but at the same time, you're having that face to face with employers," said Monica Andrade, a business resource specialist with Tulare County Employment Connection.Andrade says employers will also have an opportunity to have a more in-depth interview with some candidates by having the candidate pull over and conduct a socially distant interview outside in a separate area. Comments by Mike Milbury, an NHL broadcaster for NBC Sports, were condemned by the NHL on Friday. The league called the remarks “insensitive and insulting.”Late in Thursday’s playoff game between the Islanders and Capitals, Milbury commented, “Not even any woman here to disrupt your concentration.”Milbury was referencing a bubble setup in Toronto for Eastern Conference teams that qualified for the postseason. Outside of players and coaches, only a handful of team and league officials are allowed inside the bubble. Families were among those excluded from the bubble, which is why some players, most notably Bruins goalie Tukka Rask, decided to opt not to remain in the bubble.A similar bubble was made in Edmonton for Western Conference playoff teams.Milbury was originally slated to be on the broadcast for Friday's playoff game between Montreal and Philadelphia.
