Curtis Whitson has two strangers to thank for his family being alive today. Two brave hikers plucked a lime green bottle from a river and alerted authorities about the SOS message they found inside.Whitson, his 13-year-old son and girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez, had decided to spend Father's Day weekend backpacking the Arroyo Seco River. They spent their days boulder-hopping and floating the river on inner tubes, and their nights sleeping under the stars, bundled in lightweight mummy bags, with mesh bags over their heads to keep bugs at bay.Whitson was in familiar territory: he takes as many as 20 backpacking trips to the central California coastal forest each summer.Throughout the trip, the family's goal was to reach the Arroyo Seco narrows, float through the water shoot and down the waterfall before joining friends to float the last couple of miles down to a campground. After two and half days of lugging 50-pound packs, the family reached the narrows, a spot in the river surrounded by solid rock up to 40 feet high on each side. But the water currents were too strong for them to safely pass through."My heart sank when I realized the volume of water was just too dangerous to make rappelling down possible," Whitson said. Typically, he said, there's a rope going through climbing carabiners that have been bolted into the rocks."This time, the rope was gone," Whitson told CNN.A lucky tossAfter trying to hike up and over, Whitson and his son kept hitting dead ends. There was no way out.The group of three couldn't see anything past a bend in the canyon walls, but they heard voices on the other side. They tried yelling for help. They tried carving a message into a stick and throwing it over. But they soon realized a stick wouldn't be enough, so they came up with a new way to get someone's attention.Whitson spotted a lime green Nalgene water bottle and carved 'HELP' into the durable plastic exterior. Ramirez, his girlfriend, had brought scratch paper with her to keep score when they played games. She scratched out a quick note and popped the piece of paper inside the bottle."With one lucky toss, it went right over the waterfall," Whitson said. The group retreated back up the river to a small beach where they had earlier stopped for lunch. They had been able to float down from the beach in about two minutes, but it took about 30 minutes to get back upstream. Before settling down, the family spread out their blue tarp in a clearing and assembled white rocks to spell out "SOS." As the sun set, they used a headlamp to keep that message illuminated.'It was one of the best feelings'Some time after midnight the trio was awakened by the sound of a California Highway Patrol helicopter overhead."This is Search and Rescue. You have been found," someone said over the loudspeaker."It was one of the best feelings," Whitson gushed, "nothing was sweeter than those words uttered by CHP."Whitson said he was told two men found the bottle with the family's note, floated down to the trailhead, then hiked a couple of miles and reached the campground where they alerted the camp host. That host told Whitson about the hikers, but added the two left before the rescue without giving their names.During the rescue, the CHP crew aboard that chopper used night vision goggles and FLIR (forward looking infrared) teachnology to spot the campfire and located Whitson and his family, according to Flight Officer Paramedic Todd Bainbridge, who was on the mission. The family was told to stay put and stay warm, and a rescue crew arrived early the next morning. Whitson still gets emotional recalling the rescue and his gratitude for both the crew members and his family. Now, he wants to find the two hikers who found his family's message and saved them. 3773

Carrying a lethal weapon onto church property was considered "inappropriate" under the policies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Now, it's prohibited. The tweaked language can be seen in the church's "Handbook 2," which says: "Churches are dedicated for the worship of God and as havens from the cares and concerns of the world. With the exception of current law enforcement officers, the carrying of lethal weapons on church property, concealed or otherwise, is prohibited."The previous rule said the carrying of lethal weapons was inappropriate.Lethal weapons include a number of possible items including guns, said Daniel Woodruff,a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The handbook update took effect in the first week of August, Woodruff said, but the change will be formally communicated to local Church leaders as new meetinghouse safety guidelines in the near future. Those leaders will then be responsible for sharing the guidelines with their members, he added. The change applies to the entire church, but due to a Texas law change regarding firearms in places of worship, a letter referencing the prohibition was recently sent to church leaders in Texas and shared with members, Woodruff said.Next month, a new law will go into effect in Texas which will allow licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons in places of worship. It's one of a string of new firearm laws that will take effect across Texas next month, further loosening gun restrictions in a state that already has some of the most lax weapons laws in the nation. One of those laws will disallow school districts from prohibiting licensed gun owners -- including school employees -- from storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked vehicle on a school parking lot, as long as they're not in plain view. Another will allow foster homes to store firearms and ammunition in a safe and secure place for personal protection. The handbook tweak isn't the first change the church has seen in recent years. It's undergone many others, including dropping the moniker "Mormon," cutting an hour from Sunday church meetings, allowing missionaries to contact their families more often, ending the church's 100-year association with the Boy Scouts and dropping an anti-LGBT policy from 2015, saying children of same-sex couples can be baptized. 2365

Cosmetic products such as perfume, nail polish and shampoo help us feel and look good. But in the wrong hands -- especially those of the very young -- these products can be harmful, or even deadly. More than 64,000 kids in the United States younger than 5 years old had a cosmetic-related injury between 2002 and 2016, according to estimates in a study published Monday in the journal Clinical Pediatrics.Researchers looked at the type of product, route of exposure, location of the injury and other factors in children younger than 5 who were treated in US emergency departments. The findings came from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a database operated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission that reports on injuries and poisonings involving consumer products. The study noted that from 1999 through 2015, cosmetics were the cause of seven deaths among children, according to the National Poison Data System."Although a cosmetic product may not be harmful when used according to the directions, it is important for parents and caregivers to know that a young child could be seriously injured by these products," Rebecca McAdams, a research associate at Nationwide Children's Hospital and an author of the study, said in an email. The cosmetics most likely to cause injuriesThe authors defined cosmetic products as those that "cleanse, beautify, promote attractiveness, or alter appearance." These include hair relaxers, nail polish, moisturizers, skin oils, deodorants and make-up. The products were categorized into five groups, based on how they're used: nail care, hair care, skin care, fragrance and other, which included deodorants and make-up.The most common injuries came from nail care products (28.3%), followed by hair care products (27%), skin care products (25%) and fragrance (12.7%). About 75% of the injuries occurred when children swallowed products. The remaining exposures came from skin or eye contact. Patients were most likely to be hospitalized after exposure to hair products. The products most likely to land children in the hospital? Hair relaxers and permanent solution. Children exposed to them were more than twice as likely to have a chemical burn and more than three times as likely to be hospitalized, when compared to all other products. The study also found that younger children had a higher risk for injury and hospitalization, with the average rate of injury in children less than 2 years old being two times higher than children between the ages of 2 and 4. Those younger than 2 were also more likely to be injured from hair products.Stages of childhood development could account for these injury risks, the study's authors wrote. By 6 months of age, many kids can crawl and grab things to put in their mouths. They can pull themselves upright and walk by the time they're 1 year old, which allows them to close doors and reach across counters."These new abilities and the natural curiosity that accompanies them, coupled with a lack of previous experience in discriminating between harmful and neutral or pleasant stimuli ... can help explain why children less than 2 years of age are at greater risk," McAdams wrote.'People don't childproof their homes'Each year, doctors in emergency departments across the country treat about 4,300 young children with cosmetic-related injuries on average. The number and rate of these injuries did not significantly change across the 15 year period. This highlights the need for better cosmetic product injury prevention strategies, the study authors wrote."People don't childproof their homes, which I say without judgment because my toddlers have gotten into numerous dangerous items and I do this for a living," Dr. Emily MacNeill, a pediatric emergency medicine doctor at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, said in a text message. MacNeill was not involved with the study. The study had limitations, including the fact that the data came only from US emergency departments and didn't include cases that were treated at home, urgent care or pediatric offices. Emergency departments may also have different standards for documenting injuries, the authors noted. While the study didn't show any increases in cosmetic-related injuries, it raises awareness that people shouldn't "underestimate the danger of certain products, hair products specifically," MacNeill wrote. The best thing parents and child caregivers can do is to keep their cosmetic products stored safely and in their original containers. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends storing cosmetic products like medications -- locked in a place that's high and out of sight for young children. If a child is accidentally exposed to a cosmetic product, parents and caregivers can call the national poison help line at 1-800-222-1222. 4829

Do you think you have what it takes to reach the pinnacle of game show trivia? Trivia game show mainstay Jeopardy! is looking for contestants. The show will conduct online tests this week, and they'll be held on January 28 at 8 p.m. ET; January 29 at 9 p.m. ET; and January 30 at 11 p.m. ET. The tests are for the standard version of Jeopardy!, as well as the Teen Tournament and College Tournament. The test consists of 50 questions. Participants have 15 seconds to answer each question. The good news is you do not have to answer in the form of a question. Following the test, Jeopardy! producers will randomly invite prospective contestants who passed the test to an audition. Jeopardy! holds the auditions throughout the United States. Those who pass their audition will then be entered into the contestant pool for 18 months. While being a trivia wizard will increase your odds of being selected for the show, it doesn't automatically mean you will appear on Jeopardy! James Holzhauer, who is No. 3 on the all-time Jeopardy! money list, revealed on Monday it took him 13 attempts before reaching the show in 2019. The rest was history. Holzhauer is competing this week in the Greatest of All Time event, which pits him against fellow Jeopardy! legends Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Jennings is leading the event with two victories compared to one for Holzhauer and none for Rutter. A winner will be declared when a contestant reaches three wins.
