It houses several 3D printers which each serve a specific purpose."Digital manufacturing can be extremely useful in a combat situation or a disaster zone because we can take this shelter and deploy it to anywhere it's needed. We're able to provide parts that are not readily available, and we're able to get our equipment operational faster," said Staff Sgt. Samuel Margarini.Rather than ordering a part and waiting up to a week, the Marines can re-create a part within 24 hours, improving readiness and operational momentum.3D printing new parts is also cheaper and saves resources. "Since implementation we've had a huge impact on different platforms, we've made parts for trucks, humvees, tanks, and some drones," said Margarini.While only being used in training, for now, shelters like this will eventually be deployed where needed by the Marine Corps. 1098

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It is a trend that happens around election time—an increase in hate crimes.“The weeks before and after, particularly the presidential elections, we do see a pretty marked increase in hate crimes,” said Leonard Trinh with the hate crime unit at the District Attorney's Office. “In 2016, the two weeks after the election were very busy. In fact, I think the busiest day for hate crimes was the day after the 2016 election. But that was true in 2012 and 2008 and before.”In June, a man was caught on cell phone video punching a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Imperial Beach. The DA’s office filed felony assault and battery charges and hate crime allegations against two men, Jeffrey Brooks and Henry Brooks Jr.In September, the St. Peter’s Chaldean Catholic Cathedral in El Cajon was vandalized with a mix of graffiti. Swastikas, “BLM,” and “Biden 2020” was spray painted on the exterior.Last month, Rabbi Yonatin Helevy said he was attacked by a teenager on a bicycle, who hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur. A 14-year-old was arrested.Trinh said as of Friday, there were 42 potential hate crime cases this year. Six of them were reported in the past few weeks. 17 people have been charged so far.He said they are currently reviewing two more potential hate crime cases that came in this weekend. “We work very with our law enforcement partners and with community leaders,” Trinh said. “We encourage them to report hate crimes and hate incidents whenever they happen.”Trinh said the pandemic has also affected the local Asian-American community. Two hate crime cases were filed in connection to anti-Asian sentiment. In the two previous years, there were no hate crimes filed involving hate against this community.Trinh explained the difference between a hate crime and hate incident.“A hate incident is the use of a racial slur or a homophobic slur or anti-Semitic slur where there’s no threat of violence directed at any person or group of people and no ability to carry out that threat,” Trinh said. A hate crime involves physical harm and actual threats.People should not dismiss hate incidents as harmless, Trinh said.“Those are still concerning because incidents are oftentimes precursors to hate crimes.” Trinh added.Imam Taha Hassane with the Islamic Center said they have seen an increase in reported hate incidents.“We’re working basically at this moment with our local law enforcement to secure our houses of worship,” Hassane said.He said they are preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best.“We don't want people to be at risk or threatened just because of this election,” Hassane said. “The whole world is watching. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an exclusive interview with ABC10 News, a firefighter shared his heroic story of helping battle the massive fire that erupted aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard this past July.“It was a crazy situation,” said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Sepulveda with Navy Region Southwest Fire Emergency Services. “We [had] about 400-plus firefighters on-scene at the time,” he stated and added, “I was on the front lines with the firefighters and was directing the fire attack on the forward side of the ship at that time.”His first shift lasted for 30 hours. It took almost a week to knock it all down. “What I was feeling at that time was obviously fear and wanting to make sure that everyone was safe on-scene and make sure I had that command presence to be able to unify everybody,” he told ABC10 NewsHe has now received a civilian of the year award for his heroic actions.On Monday, Navy officials announced that the warship would be decommissioned after it was gutted this summer during the explosive fire at Naval Base San Diego. The Navy reported that it’s not cost effective to bring the ship back, which could require up to billion and seven years to restore.At the time of the fire, more than 60 personnel including sailors and civilians were treated for injuries like heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.In August, ABC10 News was the first to report that the fire was being investigated as an arson and the lead suspect is a navy sailor, according to multiple sources with close ties to NCIS.To date, the Navy will only confirm that the cause is still under investigation.Sepulveda remains grateful to the many sailors who ran to help just minutes after the flames erupted. “These ships are like homes to them and to see them in action and put everything on the line to make sure that their home was safe at the end of the day [was] incredible,” he added.The time lines for towing and dismantling the decommissioned ship are still being finalized. 1973

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Max may look like most 5-year-olds, but a rare illness left him paralyzed from the shoulder to his wrist. Bending his arm on his own is impossible — until he puts on a new device designed to help him move.University of California, San Diego, engineering students Ethan and Marcos Serrano developed these "Iron Kid" arms over the last ten weeks after max's doctor at Rady Children's Hospital enlisted their help. Today is the first time Max and his family will be able to take the arms home. Dad, Ted Ng, says he and his wife have been in awe of this whole process."It's been really touching to have this come together," Ng said. "There's all kinds of robotic arms out there but none of them would really work for his condition."Grateful to see their son gain back some of his mobility. "It was kinda of like a miracle cause I didn't know how well it would work on him cause because as a child his limbs have a very specific shape," Ng added.And do more of the stuff 5-year-olds do, like pick stuff up, eat his favorite foods, or just play with his dad."It's really up to him to figure out how he wants to use this thing," Ng said. 1158
