SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County health officials have identified the woman who may have come into contact with a bat that tested positive for rabies at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.According to the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, one person, and possible others, were exposed to rabies on September 6.The county says a bat was seen flying around a previously unidentified woman around 11:30 a.m. at the Mombasa Cooker at Nairobi Village.The bat was later collected and submitted to health officials for testing. It was later determined that the bat was infected with rabies.The agency says the bat wasn’t part of the park’s collection of animals."Any other visitors who may have come in direct contact with a bat at the location and time described below should contact County Health and Human Services," the agency said. 847

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Balboa Park is getting some new trees and, in turn, lending itself to a new brew.Friends of Balboa Park planted about 27 new trees in Balboa Park Friday in celebration of Arbor Day. The trees were placed in the grove on Park Blvd. and Morley Field Dr., across from the San Diego Zoo.The trees planted including six different varieties and are all perfect for San Diego's semi-arid climate."Friends is honored to have such strong support from our donors and corporate partners that enables us to continue making meaningful enhancements to the Park," John Bolthouse, Friends of Balboa Park executive director, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members are calling for a San Diego County Sheriff's deputy to be removed from duty.They claim he roughed up a local woman during a traffic stop on Oct. 1."I'm afraid for my life," said Shynita Phillips Abu. "I'm afraid to be targeted again, and I don't feel good at all."Standing outside the main building of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Shynita Phillips Abu described a violent encounter with a deputy.ABC 10News is not naming the alleged deputy involved at this point in the department's investigation.Abu said she was pulled over on CA 67 shortly after leaving the Lakeside Post Office."He came up to my window, and I rolled my window down, and he told me I'm pulling you over because you have a third brake light out," Abu said. "I asked the officer, what is a third brake light? I've never heard of a third brake light before, and I did inform him that everything works on my vehicle."Abu said her phone rang during their brief conversation."I got a phone call from the guy from the post office, and that's when the deputy went belligerent," she said. "He started to yell, ‘Get off the phone, put the phone down now.’"She said the deputy moved from the passenger's side to the driver's side of her vehicle and tried to get in."I'm asking him why are you arresting me," Abu said. "He said on video that I was not under arrest and I continued to record, and my husband called me and he (the deputy) told me stop calling people, stop calling people.”Abu continued to describe a chaotic situation. She said the deputy slapped her cell phone to the ground and got her out of her car."He pulled me by my hair and yanked me out of my car by force," she said. "At this point, he already had my arm. I have bruises all over my arm from his holding my arm so hard."Abu said she was handcuffed and put in the back of a car for hours, while she was taken from one facility to another. She said first they went to Las Colinas Detention facility, but she was rejected, then deputies took her to a hospital, and eventually they returned to Las Colinas.Abu said after about six hours, she was just released at a trolley stop and not charged with a crime.ABC 10News asked the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for the deputy's body camera recording. A spokesperson said they aren’t releasing it at this time.In an email, the department spokesperson said, "We are aware of the incident and have initiated an investigation into the matter. We do not want to come to any conclusions until we have all of the facts."When asked about the investigation and the deputy's status with the department, the spokesperson added, "His status remains unchanged."Following the press conference Monday, Abu walked into the Sheriff's Department and filed a complaint against the deputy. 2812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — COVID-19 related hospitalizations are on the rise in San Diego County and some healthcare workers are worried we will continue to see a significant increase over the next several weeks to months.“We’re actually seeing significant increases,” said Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, Scripps Health Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Excellence and Experience. “We’re actually higher than we were back in July. Yesterday alone the numbers we got from the county we had 532 hospitalizations across the region.”The total number of positive COVID-19 cases in the county is now 75,305. According to county data, 4,470 of all COVID-19 cases have required hospitalization, and 1,006 had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Sharieff said Wednesday at Scripps campuses, more than 100 people were hospitalized with COVID-19.“We had 117 cases that is with 16 discharges, so if we weren’t able to send home those patients yesterday, we would be at our peak level in July,” she said.She said the concern is growing from those in the medical field, not only after local Halloween parties locally, but as we enter Thanksgiving and the next several holidays.She expects the numbers to continue climbing into early 2021.“What we’re seeing now is what we have predicted,” she said. “We do worry that two or three weeks out from now that we’re going to see the number increase as well.New Year’s Eve is December 31st; if you calculate just exactly what we’re seeing now, people start getting sick in that first two weeks, because the incubation period is two to fourteen days after exposure, then they get really sick and hospitalized, and then the intensive care unit comes, so I’m very worried.”Like many healthcare systems, she says Scripps is seeing a surge in hospitalizations countywide, but even more in the South Bay, where Covid-19 has hit the community hard.Scripps has a detailed plan in place and has managed to balance hospital capacity by transferring patients to different hospitals to not overwhelm a specific location.“Every day, between 4 to 5 patients are getting transferred out of the Chula Vista campus,” she said. “Yesterday we had five transfers, this morning we had two from Chula Vista to Green, and two from Mercy Chula Vista to La Jolla. We don’t want all of the strain to go on our staff in one place when we have capability elsewhere.”“It’s really hard on the healthcare providers when we’re out there trying to save lives, and we see people taking risks like they don’t have to take right now,” she said. “It’s a punch in the gut every time.”Sharieff said the hospitals are well equipped with PPE this time around, but while many people may be letting their guards down and gathering this Thanksgiving, she’s reminding everyone that this pandemic isn’t over and will get worse if we don’t act now.“Just one thing that you do can impact so many lives afterward,” she said. 2901
