Police on Thursday confirmed that Shelby Talcott was charged with failure to disperse and unlawful assembly and Jorge Ventura was charged with failure to disperse and violation of curfew. No further details were released by authorities.Talcott confirmed Thursday evening that she had been released, and that "it was a scary experience to be arrested for doing my job."Protesters poured into the streets around the country Wednesday to protest the Kentucky jury's decision. 841
The mother of mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc writes that she is estranged from her son but hurt by his alleged attacks, and she calls on the country -- specifically, President Donald Trump -- to tone down the nasty rhetoric. She further warned that the political vitriol -- particularly talk of "war" against the media and political parties — could resonate with the mentally ill, like her son, and inspire them to "violently act out in our country," Madeline Sayoc wrote in an open letter to television network ABC, which published the correspondence Sunday night.Madeline Sayoc also said that her 56-year-old son's relatives had tried, to no avail, to get him help, and that American families need better laws to allow families to "compel and require" treatment, when necessary. Here is the full text of the letter: 822
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court released new congressional district lines Monday, replacing the old Republican-drawn maps in time for the state's May primary.House Republican and Democratic operatives said Monday afternoon they are still analyzing the partisan makeup of the new districts. But in a swing state where Republicans hold 13 House seats to Democrats' five, the balance appears all but certain to tip in Democrats' direction. The biggest changes come in the Philadelphia suburbs, where three Republican-held seats -- Reps. Ryan Costello, Brian Fitzpatrick and the retiring Pat Meehan -- were already Democratic targets. The new maps appear more compact and suburban than the existing district boundaries and an alternative that state legislative Republicans had submitted -- and one of those districts is now made up of just Montgomery County, a Democratic stronghold that the GOP had proposed dividing heavily.Republicans in the Pennsylvania legislature have said they intend to challenge the new maps in federal court. The Supreme Court previously refused to hear a challenge to the state high court's ruling that the previous maps were gerrymandered in a way that violated the Pennsylvania Constitution. 1221
The New York State Health Department is investigating a reported Chainsmokers concert that was held in the Hamptons over the weekend after a video posted to Twitter showed a massive crowd, not social distancing.Gov. Andrew Cuomo shared the video on Twitter Monday night, calling the gathering and lack of social distancing “egregious.”“I am appalled,” the governor said. “We have no tolerance for the illegal [and] reckless endangerment of public health.”The governor called on the event's "gross violations of not only the health rules, it was a gross violation of common sense. The state is conducting a full investigation into why the town issued a permit for the event. The crowd was reportedly attending a Chainsmokers concert in Southampton on Saturday that was billed as a “drive-in” event, although dozens of people could be seen standing in front of the stage. The investigation comes amid a state-level crackdown on social distancing violations, mainly focused on bars and restaurants, in an attempt to keep New York's coronavirus numbers down.Over 130 violations were issued to establishments in New York City and on Long Island from Friday through Sunday, according to Cuomo. Forty establishments have had their licenses suspended by the State Liquor Authority because of repeated social distancing violations.WPIX's Lauren Cook first reported this story. 1372
The House Intelligence Committee on Saturday released a Democratic memo in redacted form that seeks to undercut Republican claims of FBI surveillance abuses. The committee made the Democratic memo public after the White House signed off following negotiations between the FBI and the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, over what in the document should be redacted.Earlier this month, the White House objected to releasing the memo, saying that sensitive material had to be removed first. 523
