GREEN BAY, Wisc. — A man was arrested for his seventh OWI after police say he threw stolen beer and meat out of his van with officers in pursuit. The Brown County Sheriff's Office received a call from a supermarket that Timothy Andrews, who was on their watch list for retail theft, was in the store. Authorities spotted Andrews inside a van in the parking lot and deputies say he claimed to have knives and gun when they approached him.Andrews refused to get out of the van, according to investigators, and sped away from the deputies, throwing stolen beer, meat and clothing out of the window during the high-speed chase. Authorities say the van lost control at least twice during the chase, as it weaved in and out of oncoming traffic on busy streets. "Pursuits are always a balance. You're always trying to balance public safety with the apprehension of the person. And in this case, this man was doing a lot of things," Brown County Sheriff's Capt. Dan Sandberg said. The van finally spun out of control and stopped on a residential street where the suspect was arrested. Andrews, 48, faces several charges in the case including 7th offense OWI, probation violation, obstructing an officer, shoplifting and retail theft.   1280

HONOLULU (AP) — Intense turbulence struck an Air Canada flight to Australia on Thursday and sent unbuckled passengers flying into the ceiling, forcing the plane to land in Hawaii.The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered "un-forecasted and sudden turbulence," about two hours past Hawaii when the plane diverted to Honolulu, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in a statement."The plane just dropped," passenger Stephanie Beam told The Associated Press. "When we hit turbulence, I woke up and looked over to make sure my kids were buckled. The next thing I knew there's just literally bodies on the ceiling of the plane."A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.Of the 37 passengers and flight crew members injured, nine had serious injuries, emergency responders said. Thirty people were taken to hospitals.Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Chief Dean Nakano said the injured ranged in age from children to the elderly. GUATAY (CNS) - The spread of a five-acre brush fire, sparked by a car crash, was stopped Sunday, Cal Fire said. The small fire, caused by a traffic collision on Highway 79, began at 11 a.m. near the Green Valley Campground in eastern San Diego County near Descanso, Traffic was closed in both directions of Highway 79. The California Highway Patrol escorted traffic through the area. At 12:30 p.m., Cal Fire said crews would remain on the scene into late afternoon to mop up and contain the fire. HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said.
