BERLIN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- 2010 is an important year for the development of Sino-German relations. That's as the two countries have made big achievements on politics, economy, culture and society, sending their bilateral relations to a "new historical point."German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited China in July and met Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao. Both sides reconfirmed the communique issued in July. Wen also was invited to co-chair the first round of the Sino-German government consultations in 2011, making Germany the first EU country to hold high-level intergovernmental consultations with China."China and Germany have maintained a strategic partnership and a close bilateral tie, even at the highest political level," the German foreign ministry said.Tight political relations are built on strong and complementary economic connections between China and Germany, the largest trading partner for each other in their respective regions.Sino-German trade has accounted for nearly one third of the trade between China and Europe. According to the latest statistics of China Customs, from January to October, Sino-German bilateral trade reached about 115 billion U.S. dollars, up 35 percent over the same period of last year.The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Germany has invested in 319 projects, an actual investment of 830 million dollars in China from January to November, while China invested 160 million dollars in Germany at the same period.In the last three years, foreign direct investments (FDI) from China to Germany witnessed a fast development, not only in numbers, but also on quality, professionalism and management, Michael Pfeiffer, CEO of Germany Trade and Invest, told Xinhua in a recent interview."In a long period, there were four to seven FDI projects from China to Germany every year. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the smooth completion of the referendum in south Sudan, which is "an important step" towards the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peaceful Agreement, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Tuesday. Addressing an open debate on the situation of Sudan in the Security Council, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Wang Min said that the referendum in south Sudan is not an end in itself in implementing the CPA, instead, realizing sustainable peace, stability and development in Sudan is the final purpose. "No matter what the outcome of the referendum is, it is imperative to ensure the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region at large," said Wang. Wang noted that China hoped to see the north and south Sudan would continue to conduct dialogue and consultations, so as to reach an earlier agreement on such issues as the status of Abyei, wealth sharing and border demarcation, lying down a foundation for further promoting the north-south peace process. On Saturday, South Sudan referendum polling centers closed. The referendum will determine whether south Sudan remains a part of Sudan or becomes independent, in accordance with the 2005 CPA that ended a long-running north-south civil war. In order to assist Sudan in the referendum, China has donated to the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission 500,000 U.S. dollars in cash and provided its bureau with support in kind. China has also sent a group of observers to Sudan. Wang reiterated China's willingness to "work together with the international community and the parties concerned to continue to play an active and constructive role in promoting the long-term peace, stability and development of Sudan." Concerning the situation in Darfur region, Wang said that China supports a peaceful and comprehensive settlement to the Darfur issue, in particular the tackling of the root causes for the issue. "At present, the security situation in Darfur is very fragile, and humanitarian assistance is faced with many difficulties, " said Wang, "the root cause is the lack of a strong and widely supported political agreement in Darfur." China called on the Security Council and international community to strengthen support for political process in Darfur and urged the Darfur rebel groups to join the peace talks without conditions and delay, said Wang.

JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.
