(AP) — A Southern California doctor has been convicted of taking part in a million scheme to defraud Medicare.A federal jury on Wednesday found Donald Woo Lee of Temecula guilty of eight charges.Prosecutors say Lee provided medically unnecessary procedures to Medicare beneficiaries and provided phony billing codes to obtain a higher government reimbursement.Authorities say Lee submitted million in bills and received .5 million in reimbursements.Besides health care fraud, Lee was convicted of adulteration of a medical device because prosecutors say he re-packaged single-use catheters for reuse on patients. 647

TAMPA, Fla. — University of South Florida Professor Dr. Jay Wolfson and health experts around the world are studying the latest research project on the coronavirus."This thing gives us surprises almost every week. We learn something new, and it's usually unpleasant every week," said Wolfson.The new research is from Australia's National Science Agency, and it found the virus could survive and remain infectious on surfaces like glass, steel, and paper for up to 28 days."What they are concerned about, what we are all concerned about it, is if you have some viable virus on your fingers and you touch your eyes or you touch your nose or you touch your friend's eyes or nose, there's a greater risk of it being brought into the body if there's enough of it there," said Wolfson.But Dr. Thomas Unnasch, also with USF Health, says this study was done with perfect conditions for a virus to thrive."They put the virus under different surfaces and then preserve them in the dark at ideal temperatures and humidity. So it's not too surprising that under those ideal conditions, that it would last quite a bit longer than it would under normal conditions."While experts agree COVID-19 primarily spreads from person to person through droplets in the air, there is still more to understand about how it can transfer from objects or surfaces to people."People do have a proclivity to touch their face and their eyes, so if you are in a place that's not familiar to you and you are using things that are unfamiliar to you, just be careful," said Wolfson."Your own cell phone, if you are the only one using it, that's not a big deal. But door handles, faucet handles elevator buttons things like that. Wash your hands after you do that. That's a really good idea," said Unnasch.All of the experiments in this study were done in the dark. TAMPA, Fla. -- As parents across the country grow more concerned every morning when they send their kids to school, more and more are turning to bulletproof backpacks.“After Sandy Hook, people couldn’t wrap their minds around a bulletproof backpack but now they think it’s something that they need," said Yasir Sheikh, the president of Guard Dog Security.The Sandy Hook shooting inspired Sheikh to create a backpack out of bulletproof materials. It doesn’t seem like much. The backpack has just a thin layer of kevlar, but it is certified to withstand handgun rounds.“Ideally, we think with the way things are going this should become mandatory, common for all students," said Skeikh. "It’s a sad reality, it’s become a new normal."Others feel the same. Just three days after the deadly school shooting in South Florida his company saw a 150 percent increase in the number of bags they shipped.But do they actually work?Ryan Hart is a certified firearm instructor for defense training company Ground Ready International Training, or G.R.I.T Ready. He also teaches active shooter survival courses.Hart put a barrel with sand behind the backpack to simulate a body and took aim with his Glock 19.“The rounds definitely penetrated the front of the bag here," said Hart inspecting the shot-up bag, "But if we flip it over there’s no penetration past the armor itself."Next up: the AR-15.In the last decade, this style of gun has been used in six of the 10 deadliest mass shootings throughout the country, including the Parkland school shooting.“It went right through the soft armor," Hart said after spraying the backpack with bullets from the AR-15.It's what Hart expected, as the Guard Dog Security backpack is not certified to withstand assault-style weapons. To stop bullets from a similar weapon, the backpack would need to be equipped with steel plates like those installed in military vests. However, that would make the backpack fairly heavy to carry.“I would recommend (the backpack), yes," Hart said. "While it did not stop a direct shot from an assault rifle it can still stop bullet fragments, ricochets, glass flying through the air.”Then we posed this question to Skeikh: "What do you think it says about our society that we are resorting to items like this?"The backpacks cost between 0-200. Fifty percent of the proceeds from sales of the backpacks right now will go to the victim's families of the Parkland shooting.Guard Dog Security is also looking into possibly making backpack, that would have the ability to stop assault-style weapons. 2664

TAMPA, Fla. — Several areas of Tampa Bay are assessing the damage left behind from a squall of storms that produced tornadoes on both sides of Tampa Bay.At least three tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Polk Counties.The NWS believes there were tornadoes in Pinellas Park, along the Howard Frankland Bridge and near Kathleen.The National Weather Service said at 4:08 p.m., a “confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” was located over the Howard Frankland Bridge, southwest of Tampa. It was moving northeast at 35 mph.Pinellas Park Police say at least 25 structures were damaged by the storm.
