XICHANG, Sichuan, July 12 (Xinhua) -- China blasted off a new data relay satellite "Tianlian I-02" on Monday at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest Sichuan Province .The satellite was launched on a Long March-3C carrier rocket at 11:41 p.m. (Beijing Time), said sources with the center.Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the satellite is the country's second data relay satellite.China launched its first data relay satellite "Tianlian I-01" on April 25, 2008.The two satellites will form a network to offer data relay and measurement and control service for China's spacecrafts and planned space stations, according to the center. They will also be used to help perform the nation's first space docking, scheduled for the second half of 2011.China plans to launch Tiangong-1 and Shenzhou-8 spacecraft in the latter half of this year, and they will perform the nation's first space docking.Monday's launch is the 140th mission of China's Long March series of rockets.
MOSCOW, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Arctic is getting warmer at a fast pace with the Russian Arctic sector's ice areas contracting to historically low levels, according to Russian meteorological bureau Rosgidromet.According to a Rosgidromet report cited by Itar-Tass news agency Saturday, the polar cap in the Russian sector has shrunk to the historical low registered in 2007, with no ice expected to block the Northern Seaway at least until September."Currently, Arctic navigation conditions are very favorable. By early August, navigation can be done without icebreakers almost along the entire route," said Valery Martyshchenko, head of Rosgidromet's environment pollution monitoring department.According to the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, the current ice cover in the Arctic Ocean is 6,860 million square kilometers, way below average.Martyshchenko said the longer period of icebreaker-free navigation would benefit the regions located in the Arctic area, allowing longer access to food and energy supplies, but the warming of the climate also posed new threats, such as melting of ice and forming of icebergs.
ISLAMABAD, Sept.4 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's eastern Punjab province is in the grip of a dengue epidemic with dozens of cases being reported daily at various hospitals across the province, said officials and hospital sources.A report issued by the provincial health department on Friday said that as many as 145 cases of dengue fever in Lahore, the provincial capital, and several other cities have been reported in Punjab over the past three days. The total dengue fever cases in the Punjab are 1,419 since the beginning of this year, out of which 1,358 Dengue patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals, according to local media.Dengue, an acute febrile disease spread by the bite of the aedes aegypti has been endemic in Pakistan for the last few years. It spreads most often after the rainy season in July and August when pools of standing water serve as ideal mosquito breeding spots.Gravity of the dengue disease was felt at the central level and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani extended full support to the Punjab government in coping with the growing number of cases of dengue fever. The Prime Minister, who was in Lahore on Friday, directed his Principal Secretary to contact the Punjab government and assist them in taking necessary preventive measures against the Dengue fever. He also asked him to extend offer on behalf of the federal government for provision of any technical expertise to the Punjab government.Acting on reports that the virus was spreading rapidly and that measures to control it had been unsuccessful, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has presided over series of meetings and ordered the immediate suspension of the Lahore district health officer for failing to control the epidemic.A task force comprising a government minister, health officials and doctors has been set up to review the situation and suggest measures to curb the virus. On the orders of the chief minister, giant advertisements on measures that can be taken to prevent dengue have appeared in the media.People have been advised not to allow water to stand in containers, to use mosquito repellents, spray homes and be particularly vigilant at dawn and twilight when the dengue- carrying mosquitoes bite. This increase in public vigilance and awareness may yet halt the spread of a disease that over the past few weeks has struck across the province, said specialists.Meanwhile, the Health Department spokesman also stressed awareness among the people for prevention, control and treatment of dengue virus. According to him, the symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severe body pain, itching and red spots, bleeding from nose and teeth and severe pain in the eyes. He said precautions include proper covering of the pots having water, like buckets and drums, and using coils, mats and sprays for eliminating mosquitoes. He further said dengue mosquitoes usually attack early in the morning from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.in the evening. The patients should act upon the advice of qualified physicians only, he maintained.
MOSCOW, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Russia's space agency said Tuesday that a Proton-M rocket launch failed earlier this month because of a malfunction in the upper stage. The conclusion was reached by an independent investigation commission following a series of checks, Roscosmos said in a report that was posted on its website."The commission reported that the time span reserved for the gyrostabilized platform's turn was miscalculated and narrowed, which caused the Briz-M upper stage's disorientation and the satellite's journey to a wrong orbit," the agency said.Other systems in the upper stage performed well, the agency said, adding it has lifted a ban on launches of the Proton-M carrier rockets equipped with the Briz-M upper stage.Local media reported the Briz-M, manufactured by the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center, has had five failures over its 12-year history of operation. On Aug. 18, a Proton-M carrier rocket failed to deliver a communications satellite into orbit. After the failure, Russia suspended launches of Proton-M rockets pending the outcome of an investigation into the failure.
