SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Marine is setting out to accomplish something few have, climbing the continent's highest peaks and running a marathon on each one.Major Patrick Holcomb is calling it the 7&7 Challenge.“It’s not really official because up until this point only two people have done it," said Holcomb, who's been in the Marine Corps for 18 years.Holcomb will rely on his rigorous training and gear as he completes the mission.He's already run five marathons on five continents and has climbed three peaks.“Every country you go to you get to experience people and culture, there are a lot of differences around the world," said Holcomb. "What’s been shocking for me is realizing, how much at the end of the day, people are all the same."He plans to use his personal mission for good, teaming up with a nonprofit that helps veterans suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.Holcomb plans to start fundraising during the final leg of the challenge, Mount Everest in 2022.He's currently based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. 1057

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All lanes of eastbound Interstate 8 have reopened after a three-vehicle crash caused four lanes of the interstate to be closed. The crash happened near the College Road off-ramp around 3:45 a.m. The California Highway Patrol gave few details on what exactly caused the crash.A driver of the SUV involved in the crash said another car drove the wrong way down the ramp and smashed into his vehicle. A third vehicle then crashed into the two others.Two people inside one of the vehicles were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.CHP says one of those inside the sedan at the time of the crash may have been thrown from the car. The man is also being investigated for possibly driving under the influence, according to CHP.The driver of the SUV was uninjured while the driver of the third vehicle is being investigated for driving under the influence. 898

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – All orphaned dogs and nearly all cats at the Helen Woodward Animal Center found a home for the holidays, the center announced Thursday. A total of 64 dogs and 35 cats were adopted between December 17 and 23. The “Home 4 the Holidays” campaign started in 1999 in an effort to encourage winter-season pet seekers to choose adoption. Empty kennels give the center the opportunity to save more animals. A new group of orphaned dogs and cats are being transported to the center and will arrive before January. “This is like a little Christmas miracle,” explained Center Operations Director Jennifer Shorey. “We are delighted to help extend this bit of magic into the New Year.” 699

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A state measure just signed into law prohibits landlords and HOAs from discriminating against tenants and members who display religious items on their doors. The new rule stems from a dispute in Little Italy between residents and their HOA. The law "protects the display of a religious item within 15x30 square inches, as long as it does not interfere with the opening or closing of the door," Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League. The display must not "interfere with building operations and must be posted do to a sincere religious belief," says Matt Wagner, with the Anti-Defamation League.  The new law will take effect on January 1, 2020. The bill was written after a Jewish family in Little Italy was told by their HOA to take down the mezuzah on their door. The HOA has not been named.The posting of the mezuzah is required of all observant Jews. If the display is not posted, it renders a Jewish family essentially unable to live in the home. The Anti-Defamation League stepped in asking the HOA to allow the posting of the religious symbol, but they refused. The new law applies to HOA's and all landlords throughout the state.  "Just because you are a renter… doesn't mean you lose your right to religious freedom or expression," says Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "You are entitled to the same rights and the same protections as a tenant. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Active-duty troops are deployed at or around the San Ysidro Port of Entry in southern San Diego County, the Department of Defense said Friday, marking the start of a military response to the U.S.-Mexico border amid immigration concerns.More than 7,000 American service members have been deployed due to word of a migrant caravan moving up from South America, according to the Associated Press. The troops may eventually number 15,000, President Trump said Wednesday.As of Friday, one week after the Pentagon acknowledged that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had approved a Department of Homeland Security request for military support at the border, the troop deployment was still unfolding, with about 3,500 at staging bases in the Southwest.
