EUCLID, Ohio — The woman who filed a federal lawsuit against a Euclid Police officer Thursday said she was humiliated and feared for her life when the Ohio officer allegedly assaulted her.In an interview on Friday with WEWS, Euclid, Ohio resident Shajuan Gray, 46, described in detail what she said happened on March 27, 2017, when Officer James Aoki came to her apartment.Gray said she was in the shower when she heard a knock on the door that day.She came out with a towel on and saw Aoki outside. She cracked the door open and asked what was going on.“He started shouting he was tired of me, got complaints about me and to turn down my music,” Gray said. “Which I did because at this point I’m flabbergasted. I’m shocked, like, what is this about?”Gray said that’s when Aoki put his foot in her door and “barged” into her apartment without probable cause. She said he then slammed her against the freezer and arrested her, leaving bruises on her body.“As he’s slamming me and pushing me against the freezer and refrigerator, he’s twisting my arms up in an uncomfortable position,” she said. “I’m telling him then, ‘You’re hurting me. Why are you doing this to me? Please stop.’ ”In the lawsuit, Gray alleged she was only wearing a bath wrap at the time of the incident, and it fell off while Aoki assaulted her, exposing her chest. That video showed Gray walking down the stairs of her apartment in handcuffs wearing only a towel. She can be heard asking to be allowed to put on clothes and telling officers they're hurting her. “So at this point, I’m screaming and yelling with all the mixed emotions going on, crying, just in disbelief that this was happening,” Gray said. “[I was] humiliated, embarrassed, disrespected, everything. Just ashamed.”Gray also said after Aoki arrested her, he slammed her against the police cruiser.She said she feared for her life.“This is the point where I’m asking him and telling him, ‘Please let me get dressed.’ And I’m still saying, ‘You’re hurting me.’ Nothing. This man had nothing in his eyes,” she said. “It was just the worst day of my life.”After the incident, Gray filed a complaint with the Euclid Police Department. WEWS investigators obtained a copy of the complaint,as well as the findings of the police's internal investigation.These findings include Aoki's account of what happened. He said he responded to Gray's apartment on a criminal complaint of "excessive noise" called in by another resident, and heard the loud music coming from her residence.Police said Gray refused to provide her name and tried to shut the door on the officer. Police also alleged Aoki attempted to arrest Gray and she resisted. "You continued to resist and the officer used the force necessary to take you into custody," the findings said, in part. "It was unfortunate that your turbulent behavior caused you to have a wardrobe malfunction, although, according to video footage and in opposition to your statement, your top was up and your breasts were not exposed when you were escorted outside of the apartment complex in handcuffs."The internal investigation found Gray's complaint to be "not sustained."Gray was acquitted of the charges filed against her stemming from the incident, which included resisting arrest, obstruction of official business and noise violation charges.Her lawsuit, which alleges false arrest, malicious prosecution and excessive force, said Gray suffered and continues to suffer physical, emotional and psychological injuries, as well as economic losses.The injuries suffered by Gray were "preventable" had Aoki "not engaged in unconstitutional conduct in violation of her fundamental rights,” the complaint said.In addition, the lawsuit alleges the City of Euclid failed to "effectively" investigate the incident or discipline Aoki for "illegal behavior" and "false testimony."WEWS reviewed city records and found Aoki has been involved in 15 other incidents involving the use of force since 2016 — the eighth highest number of any officer within the police department.Gray’s lawsuit was the sixth filed against the city for excessive force in the last two years.Euclid Police has not responded to WEWS's multiple requests for comment. 4557

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - Nearly three-dozen cats were taken in by the San Diego Humane Society after they were left behind inside a condominium in Escondido last month, the agency announced Wednesday.The property manager of a condominium complex in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue called the group on Oct. 22 to report that one of the condo's tenants had abandoned the cats after being evicted, according to the SDHS.Officers from the SDHS' law enforcement division responded to the home and found 31 cats living in "unsanitary conditions" inside the unit, SDHS spokeswoman Nina Thompson said.The cats were taken to SDHS campuses in Escondido and Oceanside for extensive medical exams, Thompson said. One cat had to be euthanized and a majority of the cats were found to be suffering from numerous medical conditions, including upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections and heart murmurs.The remaining 30 cats underwent more than three weeks of intensive medical care and were in the process of being transferred to SDHS' rescue partner Love Your Feral Felines for recovery, Thompson said.The Humane Society encourages the public to report animal emergencies, cruelty or neglect by calling 619-299-7012. 1234

Fed up with limited leg room onboard airline cabins?Italian seat manufacturer Aviointeriors has come up with a design that allows passengers to stretch their legs as much as they want when they travel without any extra cost.The catch? The seats are so far upright that they'll be pretty much standing up.Unveiled at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018 in Hamburg, the SkyRider 2.0 aims to help airlines squeeze in more passengers by allowing an "ultra-high density" and reducing the space between rows.It's a new and improved version of a design the manufacturer revealed in 2010 but failed to get off the ground.The original Skyrider, which was was not approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration, was designed in the style of a horse saddle.Aviointeriors compared the seating position to that of a horseback rider, pointing out that cowboys can sit on saddles for hours without feeling uncomfortable.Stand up idea?The revised seats have extra padding, as well as poles to connect each row from the ceiling to the cabin floor.According to Aviointeriors, the SkyRider 2.0 "ensures an increased upright passenger position, allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort."While it remains to be seen whether Aviointeriors' definition of "adequate comfort" matches the average person's, the company stresses that the seats, designed for short haul flights, have many benefits."The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies," says a spokesperson for Aviointeriors."Furthermore, Sky Rider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs."Will it take off?The concept of vertical seats has been floating around for nearly two decades.Airbus proposed the idea of standing room flights as early as 2003 and in 2010, Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary announced that he was considering introducing special standing-room only areas of his airplanes.But the airline seems to have abandoned the idea for the time being."We have no plans to trial or introduce standing flights," a spokesperson told CNN last year.While Aviointeriors has dubbed the Skyrider 2.0 "the new frontier of low cost tickets and passenger experience," aircraft specialists have pointed out various stumbling blocks ranging from potential evacuation delays due to limited space and the fact that there is no room under the seats for personal items.The innovative seat is yet to be snapped up by an airline.   2592

Election season may be over, but two weeks after polls have closed, campaign signs still fill yards and roadways in much of the country.It's not uncommon to see political signs stand for a year after Election Day. And while the placards create plenty of visual litter, what's more concerning is the physical litter they can cause.Judith Enck, the President of Beyond Plastics says candidates need to take responsibility for their political signs."Lots of people who run for office run more than once," she said. "If they were in a two-year term, they're going to need signs in another two years, so they really should go out and collect the signs and store them somewhere and reuse them."Enck also says that because a candidate's campaign is already responsible for putting up the signs, they should also be responsible for taking them down after the election.She adds that most campaign signs aren't recyclable. While most signs used to be made entirely of cardboard, newer signs often now include a plastic coating. The coating protects the ink from sun, rain and snow, but also means candidates can't recycle signs after the election.Enck argues that in most cases, the plastic coating on a cardboard campaign is unnecessary."They pop up like mushrooms in the month of October, so I'm not sure that all that plastic coating is necessary," she said. "I would recommend to just go back to regular cardboard, and then you could actually recycle the signs."Enck adds that the metal posts that hold up campaign signs can be recycled, but they need to be separated from the signs and taken to scrap metal recycling centers. 1628

(KGTV) — A police pursuit that started in the South Bay ended in North County Tuesday, with the occupants in a standoff with police.The chase began just after 1 p.m. in National City in the 2300 block of E. 8th St. with a report of a suicidal woman in a vehicle, according to National City Police. Officers arrived to find the car leaving the area with a passenger in the back seat of a Nissan sedan.Officers tried to pull the female driver over, but she refused to stop. She continued onto northbound Interstate 805 and then northbound I-15 in the carpool lanes, police said.Sky10 was live over the standoff this afternoon:CHP officers deployed a spike strip in Rancho Bernardo, which the driver hit while traveling about 70 miles per hour. After losing one tire, she slowed to about 10 mph and continued into Escondido, eventually stopping in a parking lot in the 700 block of E. Valley Parkway.Officers surrounded her vehicle but she refused communicate with police. Officers at the scene said she was seen taking pills in the vehicle and stabbing herself.The passenger exited the car shortly after 2 p.m. Soon after, the driver exited carrying a dog. The driver then handed the dog over to police and was taken into custody, ending the 10-minute standoff.She was transported to a nearby hospital. Police have not said what charges, if any, she faces.
