Using state and local data, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association found that there have been nearly 500,000 coronavirus infections among children since the start of the pandemic. The findings were for known coronavirus cases through September 3.Children comprise nearly 9.8% of all COVID-19 cases, the report found. The report found that as of September 3, 4,321 children have been hospitalized by the virus, comprising 1.7% of all coronavirus-related hospitalizations. Hospital data only covered 23 states and NYC.Children made up .07% of coronavirus deaths, with 103 children reportedly dying from COVID-19 related illnesses. Mortality data was unavailable for seven states. So far in 2020, there have been 190,000 coronavirus-related deaths, and public health experts expect the number of fatalities to increase through the rest of the year. While the coronavirus has proven to be much more deadly for adults, especially seniors, it appears to be less deadly for children compared to influenza. According to CDC data, an estimated 477 children died from the flu in 2018-19, a season when flu-related illnesses killed an estimated 34,157 across the US.There were some inconsistencies in the coronavirus data, the report acknowledged, including how states define children. Also some states did not have hospital or mortality data. While children have largely been spared the worst effects of the coronavirus, there are still questions on how easily children can spread the virus to others. That concern has prompted a number of school districts to continue with virtual learning at the start of the 2020-21 school year.In July, a study released from South Korea and published by the CDC found that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults to spread it.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children.“The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote. 2290

Two World Health Organization experts are heading to the Chinese capital on Friday to lay the groundwork for a larger mission to investigate the origins of the coronavirus. An animal health expert and an epidemiologist will meet Chinese counterparts in Beijing to set the “scope and terms of reference” for a WHO-led international mission aimed at learning how the virus jumped from animals to humans, a WHO statement said.Scientists believe the virus may have originated in bats and was transmitted to another mammal such as a civet cat or an armadillo-like pangolin before being passed on to people.A cluster of infections late last year focused initial attention on a fresh food market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, but the discovery of earlier cases suggests the animal-to-human jump may have happened elsewhere. In an effort to block future outbreaks, China has cracked down on the trade in wildlife and closed some markets, while enforcing strict containment measures that appear to have virtually stopped new local infections. The WHO mission is politically sensitive, with the U.S. — the top funder of the U.N. body — moving to cut ties with it over allegations it mishandled the outbreak and is biased toward China.“China took the lead in inviting WHO experts to investigate and discuss scientific virus tracing,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Friday. In contrast, he said, the U.S. “not only announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization, but also politicized the anti-epidemic issue and played a buck-passing game to shift responsibilities.”More than 120 nations called for an investigation into the origins of the virus at the World Health Assembly in May. China has insisted that WHO lead the investigation and for it to wait until the pandemic is brought under control. The U.S., Brazil and India are continuing to see an increasing number of cases. The last WHO coronavirus-specific mission to China was in February, after which the team’s leader, Canadian doctor Bruce Aylward, praised China’s containment efforts and information sharing. Canadian and American officials have since criticized him as being too lenient on China. An Associated Press investigation showed that in January, WHO officials were privately frustrated over the lack of transparency and access in China, according to internal audio recordings. Their complaints included that China delayed releasing the genetic map, or genome, of the virus for more than a week after three different government labs had fully decoded the information.Privately, top WHO leaders complained in meetings in the week of Jan. 6 that China was not sharing enough data to assess how effectively the virus spread between people or what risk it posed to the rest of the world, costing valuable time. 2810

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says he has been discharged from a New Jersey hospital after a week there following his announcement that he had contracted the coronavirus. Christie said in a Twitter post Saturday that he had been released from Morristown Medical Center and would have “more to say about all of this next week.” Christie announced Oct. 3 that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and said hours later that he had checked himself into the hospital after deciding with his doctors that doing so would be “an important precautionary measure” given his history of asthma. 618

Unemployed in California will receive additional unemployment assistance from the federal government but it still remains unclear when the money will be available. On Saturday, the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD) announced the federal government approved its application for the Lost Wages Assistance program. The money is part of an executive order that President Donald Trump signed earlier this month.Additional funds will be available for a limited period of time, a minimum of three weeks. To qualify for the extra funds, people must receive at least 0 per week in benefits from EDD and certify that they are unemployed or partially unemployed because of the coronavirus pandemic.EDD will also give retroactive pay unemployment benefits dating back to August 1st. 794

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin will not be participating in an investor conference in Saudi Arabia.Other top finance leaders — including three in Britain, France and Holland — have also withdrawn amid growing controversy over dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance and apparent killing.Mnuchin said on Wednesday that he would make the decision based on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's briefing to President Donald Trump on his visit earlier this week to Riyadh to discuss the Khashoggi case.Pompeo said Thursday that he advised Trump to give the Saudis "a few more days" to investigate.Mnuchin had repeatedly said he plans to attend the Future Investment Initiative pending new information about the case, even as details reported in the Turkish and American press about the fate of the Washington Post columnist's fate have grown increasingly gory.Turkish investigators wearing hazmat suits searched the Saudi consul general's residence in Istanbul on Wednesday, looking for clues to what happened to Khashoggi amid growing indications that the men allegedly responsible for the journalist's death have close ties to the highest levels of the Saudi government.Sources told CNN that a group of Saudi men whom Turkish officials believe are connected to Khashoggi's apparent killing were led by a high-ranking intelligence officer, with one source saying he was close to the inner circle of the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.Emerging details have triggered a number of top government officials to withdraw from participating in the event, including UK Trade Minister Liam Fox."The Secretary of State for International Trade has decided the time is not right for him to attend the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh on 23 October," said a UK government spokesman in a statement Thursday. "The UK remains very concerned about Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance."The statement continued: "We encourage Turkish-Saudi collaboration and look forward to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia conducting a thorough, credible, transparent, and prompt investigation, as announced. Those bearing responsibility for his disappearance must be held to account."French finance minister Bruno Le Maire also said Thursday he's canceling his plans to attend next week's conference, dubbed "Davos in the Desert.""The conditions have not yet been met for me to go to Riyadh," Le Maire told French television's Public Senat. "The facts are serious and we want to know the truth", the minister said.Dutch Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra also withdrew on Thursday. A source familiar with the matter told CNN that "the minister is not going" to the Saudi conference. The finance minister was expected to submit a letter to the Dutch Parliament later Thursday formally confirming he is not attending.Mnuchin told reporters during a Treasury press event Wednesday alongside Mexico's finance minister that he would make a decision Thursday. "We're going to revisit the decision again tomorrow," Mnuchin said. "So for now we are. We're going to make a decision tomorrow based on Secretary Pompeo's report."Mnuchin's attendance at the event has become a benchmark of the administration's response to the growing Saudi controversy as top bank executives and investors have dropped out.Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, dropped out on Wednesday along with the heads of two major French banks: BNP Paribas and Societe Generale. In recent days, Trump has repeatedly come to the defense of Saudi Arabia, saying the country's crown prince "totally denied" knowledge about the suspected death of the Washington Post journalist and said answers into the matter would be coming "shortly." 3742
