RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say three members of a family were injured, one critically, when they were ejected from the log ride at a Southern California amusement park.Fire officials say the ride malfunctioned and one of the log-shaped vessels overturned Saturday at Castle Park in Riverside.Officials say riders were thrown from the vessel and trapped in the water.Fire Capt. Brian Guzzetta says a woman was hospitalized in critical condition. A man and 10-year-old boy were treated at a hospital for minor injuries.Guzzetta says a pump apparently malfunctioned, preventing the flow of water onto the track. He says when the log descended from one of the falls, there wasn't enough water to slow it down and it crashed. The log ride is closed during an investigation but Castle Park will remain open through the weekend. 838

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California state prison officials say as many as 17,600 inmates may be released early due to the coronavirus. That's 70% more than previously estimated and a total that victims and police say includes dangerous criminals who should stay locked up. The earlier releases also are causing consternation as probation officers and community organizations scramble to provide housing, transportation and other services for inmates who may pose a public health risk because several hundred have been paroled while still contagious. Officials have been under intense pressure to free more inmates, though officials say Corrections Secretary Ralph Diaz is likely to block some of the earlier releases. 726

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 60-year-old serial rapist in Northern California whose crimes went undetected for nearly three decades was sentenced to 897 years in state prison. The Sacramento Bee reported that Roy Charles Waller, dubbed the “NorCal Rapist,” showed no emotion Friday and sat with eyes closed during sentencing. He declined to address the victims or the court. A jury in Sacramento convicted Waller of raping nine women in their homes between 1991 and 2006 in six counties. Investigators used DNA technology and genealogy websites to zero in on Waller and arrested him more than two years ago. A woman raped in 2006 testified that the day Waller was arrested was the first time she could take a shower without fear. Waller says he is innocent. 764

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene. The 35-year-old man allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The man's name has not been released. Authorities say the vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car. As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say the Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital. The Outlander’s driver was not injured and is cooperating with police. 648
