As start dates for school inch closer, educators and health officials are unveiling plans to go back to school safely. One focus: face masks.“It’s important for people to understand germs,” Laura-Anne Cleveland, an associate nursing officer at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, said. Cleveland says everything starts with education. “Trying to get them to understand that air and breath from us can have germs in it," she said.Cleveland said the best way to do that with younger kids is through a little science experiment.“Putting a container of water, putting pepper in it and putting soap on their finger and putting your finger in. The pepper disperses, and so showing that the pepper is the germs and soap and things like that are really good to be able to use,” she explained.As schools finalize plans for reopening--whether that be online, in person, or a combination of the two--masks have become one of the biggest talking points.“I have never dealt with anything like this,” Marty Gutierrez, an 8th-grade math teacher, said. Gutierrez has been teaching for 26 years.“So much is up in the air and we start back to school in three weeks,” he explained. “And we don’t have guidelines or they are changing every day or even two, three times a day.”One of those guidelines is whether masks will be recommended or required.“Like anything recommended or required with middle school kids, it’s that year where you push boundaries,” Gutierrez said. “I get parents and their ideals and values and what they want their freedoms to be. Just getting kids to wear masks is going to be difficult enough, and we know we’re going to have some kids that ‘You know what? My parents don’t want me wearing a mask.'”If schools recommend masks instead of requiring them, there are fears this could open up doors for bullying.“I’m sure that there will be some kids that are harassing kids for not wearing a mask, or kids that have a different mask,” he said.Or conversations about fairness.“If you have a sibling that has to wear a mask but you don't have to, it’s going to not feel fair,” Cleveland said.Masks have become controversial, but to Gutierrez, it’s just an extra layer of safety for everyone in the building, including those who may be at high-risk for getting COVID-19.“People are scared. I have friends that have children that are recovering from cancer, or I have friends that take care of elderly parents that are immunocompromised,” he said.Cleveland and Gutierrez, both parents, themselves, want to keep kids in school and make sure kids remember the why.“Why are we wearing masks? Why are we wearing face shields? Things like that, and getting the children to understand that,” Cleveland explained.“This is the best we can do right now, and if we don't follow these guidelines, you're not going to be seeing these friends again, we’re going to go back to that situation where you’re only going to see them online. Authorities are using the recent arrest of a registered sex offender as a reminder for parents to monitor their children’s candy this Halloween season.Detectives with the Santa Barbara County Special Investigations Bureau and the Cannabis Compliance Team pulled over a driver Wednesday afternoon in Santa Maria, California.The driver was identified as Christian Sandez of Santa Maria. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says inside his van they found “a large amount of packaged cannabis infused candy, processed cannabis flower, concentrated cannabis and cannabis vape products, which he possessed for the purpose of sales.”The 28-year-old, who is on active parole, does not have a California Bureau of Cannabis Control retail or sales license, according to the sheriff’s office.Sandez was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, which is a felony, and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail where he is being held without bail for violating his parole, the sheriff’s office says.The sheriff’s office says cannabis-infused products “are intentionally packaged to resemble normal candy and can easily be mistaken” and they are encouraging parents to monitor their children’s candy, especially around Halloween.This story originally reported on KSBY.com. 1282

AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora police officer has been suspended for one week following a well-publicized incident in which the white officer pulled a gun on an Indian American doctor who was trying to park at a refugee center the doctor operates.The Sentinel reports that Officer Justin Henderson with the Aurora Police Department was suspended for 40 hours without pay and ordered to attend de-escalation training for his March 1 confrontation with Dr. P.J. Parmar.Parmar, who is Indian American, says he's disappointed with the punishment and that he believes his race affected how Henderson treated him.His attorney has said he plans to file a federal lawsuit against the city.In a June interview, Parmar told Scripps station KMGH in Denver that he wants to see reforms made in the Aurora Police Department.He said on March 1 that he was moving Boy Scout gear from the Mango House — a shared space for refugees and asylees — to another property, when he noticed a police car parked in his ground-level garage, partially blocking the exit. Pamar said he honked his car.Pamar then claims the officer jumped out of the vehicle, swore at him and pulled out a gun as he ran toward the car.Pamar then started recording the interaction on his phone. It shows Pamar asking Henderson to leave his property."No, I'm going to figure out whose property this is first," Henderson said.At one point, Parmar said Henderson pointed a gun at his face."The gun pointed at me — it was scary, but it's not what hurt the most," Parmar said in June. BAKERFIELD, Calif. - An Oildale, Calif. 11-year-old tried to kill himself after his tablet was taken away, according to court documents obtained by Scripps affiliate KERO-TV.The documents show Kern County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Woodrow Avenue Sunday evening for reports of an attempted suicide.The boy's mother told deputies she found her son hanging in his bedroom closet by a sweater.The mother said she pulled him from the makeshift noose and called 911. Deputies performed CPR when they got there and the boy was then taken to the hospital for further treatment.
