BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton here on Saturday, stressing that it is of ever great importance to further deepen and develop Sino-U.S. relations.     Hu appreciated Clinton for her inaugural visit to China and other parts of Asia since taking office, saying this reflects the importance the new U.S. administration puts on developing relations with China and other Asian countries.     Clinton said she had "very good meetings" with Chinese officials during her visit, which she called the beginning of "a new era" of Sino-U.S. relations characterized by positive cooperation. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China Friday called on the international community to "act cautiously" on the Darfur issue as it is afraid rash action could damage peace and stability in Sudan.     "The involved parties should fully respect and listen carefully to the voices of the African Union (AU), the Arab League and African and Arabian countries," Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said in his meeting with visiting Sudanese president's envoy Awad Ahmed al-Jaz in Beijing.     "The international community should further promote the deployment of the UN/AU hybrid operation in Darfur", Xi said.     Xi called on the international community to help advance the political process, to ensure the Doha-mediated dialogue will achieve substantive progress and facilitate the smooth progress ofthe humanitarian aid in the Darfur region.     Under joint mediation of the United Nations (UN) and the AU, as well as the sponsorship of Qatar, the Sudanese government and rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) signed in Doha last month a goodwill agreement to pave the way for resumption of peace negotiations.     During the meeting, Xi also highlighted the growth of relations between China and Sudan since the two forged diplomatic relations 50 years ago. Xi noted China would regard the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to push traditional friendly relations to a higher level.     Echoing Xi's views, al-Jaz said that Sudan expected to continue to cement bilateral friendly cooperation with China in various fields and would firmly support China on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet.     He said the Sudanese government would never recognize the arrest warrant against President al-Bashir but still remained committed to working with the UN and AU and take effective measures to improve the humanitarian situation in Darfur and coordinate with the implementation of the UN/AU hybrid operation in the region.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Tuesday called for increased efforts of democratic parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce to promote the development of a poverty-stricken city in southwest China.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the call at a working conference on supporting the construction of Bijie, a city in Guizhou Province.     Bijie was approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, in 1988 as a trial zone featuring ecological environment protection and construction, development and poverty-alleviation.     Jia said the significant economic and social achievement made in Bijie over the past 20 years exemplifies the enormous advantages of the political system of multi-party cooperation and the political consultation system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     Jia outlined three major tasks for Bijie's future development: development and poverty alleviation, ecological construction and population control must be firmly grasped.     He also called for efforts to explore new ways to develop the region.     Efforts should be made to pursue leap-forward development in both economy and society in the region, he said.     In the same meeting, Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the construction of Bijie trial zone had made significant phase achievements.     The region, where the poor once struggled to have adequate food and clothing, was on its way to becoming a place where the people can generally lead a well-off life, he said.     Over the past two decades, people from the democratic parties offered enormous support to develop the hilly hinterland region that is home to more than 20 ethnic minorities.     They helped to contribute to local education programs, training of migrant workers, building local medical institutions, constructing hydropower stations and helped tackle prevailing ecological problems including desertification.     The CPPCC is a patriotic united front organization of the Chinese people, serving as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC, and a major manifestation of socialist democracy.

BAMAKO, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday vowed to increase aid to African countries, cancel part of their debts, and expand trade with and investment in these countries.     Hu made the statement while meeting with his Malian counterpart Amadou Toumany Toure.     Hu, making his first visit to this western African nation, was accorded a 21-gun salute in a welcome ceremony before the two presidents started talks.     This is Hu's second African tour since the landmark China-Africa summit in 2006 when Hu announced eight measures to promote ties with Africa, including massive tariff cuts and debt exemptions for scores of African countries, and doubling aid to Africa over a three-year period.     In the past two years, China has increased aid to African countries, eliminated tariff for goods from some least developed African nations, and cancelled parts of the debts owed by African countries, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said days ahead of Hu's visit. Chinese President Hu Jintao (L) meets with Malian President Amadou Toumany Toure in Bamako, Mali, on Feb. 12, 2009    Trade between China and African countries increased to 106.8 billion U.S. dollars last year from just under 40 billion dollars in 2005, according to the Chinese Commerce Ministry.     Hu said that as the world financial crisis has posed severe challenges, it is of greater significance to step up China-Africa solidarity and cooperation.     "China is paying much attention to African countries' difficulties and concerns as the global financial crisis has begun to take a toll on Africa," Hu said.     "We would like to increase communication and exchanges with Mali and other African countries so that together we will tide over the crisis," Hu said.     On China-Mali ties, Hu said the two countries will usher in a new era of development as next year marks the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.     Hu hailed the past 49 years of friendship as a "paradigm of south-south cooperation" and described the two nations as "good friends, partners and brothers."     To boost bilateral relations, Hu proposed that both nations keep high-level visits and increase exchanges between their governments, parliaments, militaries and non-governmental organizations.     On economic ties, Hu proposed that both sides step up coordination and carry out government-to-government cooperative programs.     Furthermore, the Chinese government would like to encourage and support Chinese businesses with strong capacities to invest in Mali, he said.     Hu called for the two countries to work more closely in telecommunications, agriculture, and infrastructure construction among others.     He also suggested setting up a bilateral trade and technology steering committee so as to plan and coordinate cooperative programs.     China welcomes Mali to showcase its civilization and arts in the 2010 Shanghai Expo, Hu said.     Hu also pledged to continue to offer help in personnel training and provide Mali with medicines and equipment to fight malaria.     On international affairs, Hu said China will urge the international community to pay greater attention to Africa's development and help the continent attain the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.     On his part, President Toure said his people cherished their friendship with China, which is sincere, consistent and durable.     Toure also appreciated China's long-term assistance for his country, which he said played an important role in promoting Mali's economic and social development and improving people's livelihood.     Looking to the future, Toure said his country will strengthen solidarity and friendly cooperation with China.     He said that Mali will, as always, adhere to the one-China policy.     Following their talks, the two leaders signed cooperative deals and gave a briefing to the media.     During his two-day stay in Bamako, Hu will meet with President of the Malian National Assembly Dioncounda Traore.     Hu is also scheduled to attend the inauguration of a China bridge construction aid project in Bamako and the opening ceremony of a China-aided anti-malaria center, and meet Chinese medical workers in Mali.     From Mali, Hu will travel to the three African countries of Senegal, Tanzania and Mauritius.
