(KGTV) - As parents and children prepare for a new school year, a study shows California schools do not earn top grades compared to other states. California ranked 38th among the 50 states and District of Columbia in 29 categories, according to the Wallet Hub study. Data considered to measure quality included graduation rate, dropout rate, math and reading test scores, Advanced Placement exam scores, student-teacher ratio, and SAT and ACT results. Safety was measured by number of school shootings, share of high school students who were armed, participating in violence, or access to illegal drugs, school safety plans, youth incarceration rates, and safety grades of roads around schools. California was 4th best for the percentage of threatened or injured high school students. The state came in last for its student-teacher ratio. Other key rankings: 44th – Math Test Scores 38th – Reading Test Scores 32nd – Median SAT Score 16th – Median ACT Score 22nd – % of Licensed/Certified Public K–12 Teachers 34th – Dropout Rate 7th – Bullying Incidence Rate Top states for education included Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, and Vermont. (KGTV and AP) - Two suspects are in custody in the United States in connection with the deaths of nine women and children in northern Mexico, relatives of the victims report. Bryan LeBaron said Thursday U.S. officials told the family that two suspects had been detained in the United States, but did not specify what role they had played in the Nov. 4 ambush attack. Earlier this week, prosecutors said more than 40 suspects have now been identified in connection with the killings of the extended Langford and LeBaron families who have lived in northern Mexico for decades. Three mothers and six children were killed; eight others were injured. The victims were dual citizens of Mexico and the United States, and part of a Mormon community of about 3,000 members living in Mexico. "The FBI remains committed to working alongside our international partners to help bring justice to the perpetrators of this heinous act of violence." (KGTV) - A group of San Diego lawmakers, water agencies and business leaders are joining forces in opposition of a possible new state tax on tap water.Under the proposed State Senate Bill 623, Californians would see an additional 95 cents per month on their water bills.SB623 is one of two articles of legislation being discussed by state lawmakers that could see residents’ water bills go up by more than per month.The goal of the tax would be to clean polluted groundwater around the state, particularly agricultural areas where water is considered undrinkable -- with arsenic, lead and nitrate levels that have been compared to Flint, Michigan’s crisis.State Sen. Bill Monning (D-Carmel), who authored the bill, said SB623 "will establish the Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund to provide an ongoing source of funding to finance water improvement projects throughout California.The USGS map below show various water sites around California.
