A car plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians on a street in New Orleans, killing two people and injuring six others as the city celebrates Mardi Gras festivities.A majority of the people struck Saturday night were on bicycles, but it's unclear how many, Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said. Of the people injured, three are in critical condition.The driver, Tashonty Toney, 32, was arrested and faces several charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide, hit and run, and reckless operation, the New Orleans Police Department tweeted.Toney was not injured, and had originally fled the scene, Ferguson said"We were able to apprehend the subject so quickly because citizens stopped this individual, because they thought they were helping someone who had just been involved in a one-car accident," Ferguson said.Officers determined that the accident scene spanned several blocks of Esplanade Avenue. Earlier, police had said they are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated, and standard protocol involves breathalyzer and blood tests.Police did not provide details on the people killed or injured. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will release the victims' identities after autopsies are completed and family members notified.While no motive is currently known, the incident does not appear connected to the Endymion parade, a Mardi Gras-related activity that was happening nearby, Ferguson said.The crash comes about two years after a drunken driver rammed into a crowd taking part in the Endymion parade, injuring at least 28 people. The driver in that 2017 crash, Neilson Rizzuto, was charged with vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and reckless operation and hit-and-run driving.The Endymion parade is one of the most popular events leading up to Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday. A Denver family is trying to raise million in order to cure their son with a rare genetic disease. Doctors told Amber Freed that her 2-year-old son is one of 34 people in the world to have this rare neurological genetic disease. “The disease is so rare, it doesn’t even have a name,” Freed said. “It’s called SLC6A1, because that is the gene that it effects.” The disease causes Maxwell to have trouble moving and communicating, and soon it will only get worse. “The most debilitating part of the disease will begin between the ages of 3 and 4,” Freed said. “So, we are in a fight against time.”Maxwell has a twin sister named Riley. “I noticed early on that Maxwell wasn’t progressing as much as Riley,” Freed said. “I noticed he couldn’t use his hands. The doctors told me that every baby can use their hands. That’s when I realized there was something wrong with him.”After multiple visits to the doctor, Freed was able to find a genetic specialist to give Maxwell a diagnosis. “He looked at me and said, ‘Something is very wrong with your son. I don’t know if he’s going to live,’” Freed said. “My soul was just crushed. It was a sadness I didn’t even know existed on earth. You never think something like this could happen. I left my career, and I had no other choice but to create my own miracle and to find a treatment forward to help Maxwell and all those others like him.” Freed searched for scientists trying to create a cure, which she found at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. “We’re working with diseases where kids are born with a defective gene,” said Steven Gray, an associate professor at UTSW in pediatrics. “Our approach is to replace that gene to fix the condition at the level of their DNA. We’re taking the DNA that those patients are missing and packaging that into a virus and use that virus as a molecular delivery truck to carry those genes back in their body and fix their DNA.” “It’s a rare disease, no one has ever heard of it,” Freed said. “But one rare disease messed with the wrong mother.” Freed said she has raised million to help with research for the cure and will need an additional million, in order to let Maxwell and many others continue to enjoy life. “I want Maxwell to have every opportunity that children should have in this life,” Freed said. “When he is having a good day, I just try and soak him in as much as I can. A group called "Whole Worker" is requesting Whole Foods Market to make administrative changes to improve working conditions and pay for the grocery chain's employees. To force the issue, Whole Worker is calling for a mass sickout of Whole Foods employees on Tuesday. The group was originally calling for the sickout to be held on May 1. Grocery store workers are being told to go to work as they're considered essential employees, while non-essential employees are being told to stay or work from home to prevent the spread of the virus.Among the demands, Whole Worker is requesting:-Guaranteed paid leave for all workers who isolate or self-quarantine instead of coming to work.-Reinstatement of health care coverage for part-time and seasonal workers.-Increased FSA funds to cover coronavirus testing and treatment for all team members, including part-time and seasonal.-Guaranteed hazard pay in the form of double pay during our scheduled hours.-Implementation of new policies that can facilitate social distancing between workers and customers.-Commitment to ensuring that all locations have adequate sanitation equipment and procedures in place.-Immediate shutdown of any location where a worker tests positive for COVID-19.
