SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As six candidates took the stage Friday, the eyes on who would be the one to replace former Congressman Duncan Hunter focused mainly on three.Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republicans Carl DeMaio and Darrell Issa. The three are polling among the top for two spots up for grabs in the March primary. The two highest vote-getters on March 3 will get a ticket to the November runoff for the 50th Congressional District seat.RELATED: 50th District candidates square off on stageHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of campaign fraud. Campa-Najjar is making another run for the seat after he narrowly lost in 2018 to Hunter, who was then under indictment. He opened the debate Friday. RELATED: New poll shows frontrunners to replace Duncan Hunter"For me it's about rewarding the middle class, lowering the cost of housing, making sure that health care is affordable, we will talk about all of that today," Campa-Najjar said. The debate mainly focused on housing. Former City Councilman DeMaio placed a lot of the blame for the state's high costs on Democrats in Sacramento. "We see people leaving because California is not what it once was," DeMaio said.RELATED: Issa secures two high-profile conservative endorsementsWith Democrats entirely behind Campa-Najjar, DeMaio and Issa have been attacking each other for that second spot in the runoff. Issa represented districts in San Diego County in Congress for nearly two decades. He did not run for re-election in 2018, saying he had plans to serve in the Trump administration. "The president nominated me not once, but twice, to serve in his administration but I was blocked by the Senate," Issa said.RELATED: Issa stands by ad ripped by his own partyThe race has garnered national attention mainly due to political attack ads between DeMaio and Issa. A recent Issa ad attacking DeMaio was criticized by his own party for displaying headlines that described DeMaio as gay. Still, Issa largely did not engage with DeMaio on the debate stage. Instead, it was Campa-Najjar who needled both. In his exchange, he took aim at DeMaio for always attacking state politicians.RELATED: San Diego Republican Party won't endorse a 50th District candidate"If you want to work on it run for governor man, half this room does not understand why you're running for Congress? All your proposals are about California," Campa-Najjar told DeMaio on stage. "And join Brian Jones in the Senate and help us reduce our taxes in California."Jones is also running for the 50th District seat."And the other half of the room knows exactly what I'm talking about," DeMaio responded to Campa-Najjar.RELATED: Who could take of the 50th District after Hunter's guilty pleaDeMaio says he can reform the state while serving in Congress."You can do both. It's called leadership," DeMaio added.Meanwhile, Issa says he would use his experience in Congress to be influential as soon as he's elected. "I believe with my 18 years of experience and seniority, I go right to the top of key committees," Issa said.Topics for debate included job growth, housing discrimination politics, and eliminating the cap on state and local tax deductions. 3199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children's minds cam become overwhelmed during the chaos of a pandemic. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? A lot of kids are really struggling with getting through a paragraph or a sentence."Lee also says Brain Balance is by no means a cure, just a stepping stone to help children with their struggles."We know there are these road blocks in the brain. So we help them clear those road blocks, and to help them truly thrive, especially in the new school year." 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - At St. John The Evangelist's Sunday night service, the pews were packed to hear why their pastoral associate was resigning.Aaron Bianco was asked to come to St. John August of 2016. His work: organizing events, budgets and other behind the scenes tasks. His goal, to build up a more inclusive church.Bianco has been married to his husband for 10 years last month, and once he started at St. John, so did the attacks."They've threatened me from shooting me down across the street, to throwing Molotov cocktails into the church," Bianco said. The hate groups sent emails equating him to a pedophile and threatening him. His tires were slashed, fire thrown at the church doors, the office broken into and spray painted with a gay slur."They're no different from organized crime or a terrorist group. They will continue until they get their way," Bianco said their goal was to force him out. "I'm convinced that the gospel is on my side, and they can spew their hate, but I'm not going to allow them to make me hate them back," Bianco said.Last week his personal information including photos of his family and his home address was published on a conservative Catholic website. Bianco said he saw someone in their yard in the middle of the night  watching the house.Since the threats, he's added security to his home and filed police reports. He realized it was all too much, "My life and those of my family are more important than any job."Bianco addressed the packed church at Sunday night's mass, "when hate rages like a fire, love rains down, and I feel it from so many of you in this room."Bianco told 10News he believes there is more good in the world than bad, explaining he's received encouraging notes from people all over the world. After his speech, the church erupted, "It made me so happy that everybody stood there and clapped for the longest ovation I've ever heard in a church in my life. Letting him know that we love you, we care about you and you're going to be missed," Parishioner Berena Pe?a said. She attended the church a decade prior and stopped coming because she didn't feel welcome as a lesbian. Her friend convinced her to try again two years ago. She said she could feel the difference, and it woke her up.Bianco said this is not the end, and he will keep fighting. He said he will still attend church, hopes these groups stop their attacks and instead come and talk with him. 2524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California's stay at home order may be in effect, but you can still hear the sounds of heavy machinery and hammers banging across San Diego County.Construction was deemed essential, allowing builders to continue working."Not only have we been able to pull permits, but we can call our inspections," said Gregg Cantor with Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel.Companies like Cantor's business have changed, but it keeps moving. He said employees who can are working from home, client calls are happening remotely, and inspections are taking place at a distance or in some cases through videos and pictures."We're conscious of social distancing as well as making sure we don't have more than five or six people at any given time on the job site," Cantor said.Local companies aren't the only ones changing how they operate. The City of San Diego's Development Services Department (DSD) laid out a series of changes to protect city staff and customers."The city is taking necessary preventative safety measures while being responsive to the business needs of our customers," said DSD Director Elyse W. Lowe. "DSD employees will continue to work with customers to limit delays to project approvals and keep the city moving forward. We are quickly leveraging available technology to increase our options and continuously implementing new safety measures in response to this unprecedented global pandemic."Changes include revamping the residential inspection process by now allowing for photos to be submitted instead of in-person physical inspections for qualified residential project, granting all qualifying building permit applications and issued building permits an automatic 180-day extension, and establishing an unstaffed document drop-off area for customers to submit project files and documents in the first floor of the Development Services Center."We're still very grateful that we are able to send our crews out every day," said Borre Winckel, president and chief executive officer of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County.Winckel said there were some early hiccups with building inspections across the county, but things have smoothed out."We were promised they would send the inspectors out as long as the conditions were safe," he said. "So it was very important for us since we're an outdoor activity that we created this safe and healthy environment for our workforce and the inspectors."Winckel said right now building is a business and plans are getting reviewed, but he pointed to New York and Washington where some construction is either blocked or building is only approved for projects deemed essential.Winckel said in California some have asked the governor to stop in office reviewing of plans."If we don't go beyond current construction and can't be processing plans anymore, that would just create a disaster for us and housing in the future," he said. "So there's a bit of tension there."For now, the show goes on."Most of the people want to keep moving forward," Cantor said. "There are some people that just want to pause for a second, but they are not canceling out on doing the work." 3152
