The service academy game between Air Force and Army scheduled for Saturday at West Point, New York, was postponed Thursday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases at the Air Force Academy and the surrounding community."We are disappointed to postpone this game, but the health and safety of our cadets, staff, and the community continues to be our No. 1 priority at the Academy," Air Force Falcons Director of Athletics Nathan Pine said in a press release. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded a warning about several hand sanitizer products that have been found to contain wood alcohol, which can potentially be deadly to ingest or absorb through the skin.The agency says there has been a sharp increase in products that claim to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but have tested positive for methanol, or wood alcohol.Methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening, according to the FDA.Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death, the FDA says."Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects," the FDA wrote in their statement.While anyone who puts methanol on their hands is at risk, officials say young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.The FDA says consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitizers with methanol who are experiencing symptoms should seek treatment immediately.The FDA says it is especially concerned with:The dangers of drinking any hand sanitizer under any conditions. While hand sanitizers with possible methanol contamination are more life-threatening than those that are not contaminated, FDA urges consumers not to drink any of these products.Certain hand sanitizers that may not contain a sufficient amount of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.Hand sanitizers that are sold or offered for sale with false and misleading, unproven claims that they can prevent the spread of viruses such as COVID-19, including claims that they can provide prolonged protection (e.g., for up to 24-hours).Products that are fraudulently marketed as “FDA-approved” since there are no hand sanitizers approved by FDA.Products packaged to appear as drinks, candy or liquor bottles, as well as products marketed as drinks or cocktails because their appearance could result in accidental ingestion or encourage ingestion. The U.S. has now recorded more than 3 million new cases of COVID-19 in the month of November alone, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has recorded at least 3.1 million cases of COVID-19 since Nov. 1 — more than 25% of all the cases the country has seen since the pandemic began.The spike in cases has led to a concerning jump in virus-related hospitalizations across the country. According to the COVID Tracking Project, more than 83,000 people across the country are currently battling the coronavirus in a hospital — the most the country has seen since the pandemic began. The COVID Tracking Project reports that while the entire country is seeing a spike in hospitalizations, the Midwest and South have been hit particularly hard — 69% of all COVID-19 hospitalizations across the country have occurred in those two regions.The spike has led to a concerning increase in hospital resources. In some rural hospitals in the Upper Midwest, there aren't beds to spare.The COVID Tracking Project also reports that there has been a significant uptick in deaths since the start of November. Since Oct. 31, the 7-day average of daily deaths has increase from 810 to 1,470. The current rate of deaths per day hasn't been seen in the U.S. since mid-May. The concerning spike occurs as much of the country sees the weather turn colder ahead of winter months, and comes as Americans prepare to celebrate the holiday season — something health officials warn could further facilitate the spread of the virus. The CDC has recommended that Americans not travel to celebrate Thanksgiving with loved ones and recommends against hosting large gatherings this year.It also comes as several drug companies, including AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer have all reported encouraging results from their COVID-19 vaccine trials. The Stallion Springs, California Police Department is warning the public about a cell phone "spoofing" scam that's going around asking for personal information. The spoofing scam appears to look like a legitimate phone call as the caller ID is displayed as the victim's own cellphone number.A voice recording identifies the call is coming from AT&T, and advises the victim that their cellphone account has been compromised and they may be a victim of fraud. The voice recording then asks for the victim to confirm their personal information, specifically asking for the last four digits of their social security number.AT&T confirmed to Stallion Springs Police that this is a phone scam. Police advise that if you receive calls like this, to not answer them. If you do answer, do not give out your personal information. Hang up and call your phone company asking about the legitimacy of the scam or call police. Report spoofing at www.IC3.gov. 989
