Clean air can feel hard to find right now.The American Lung Association is working help though, by supporting the production of electric cars.The association wants every car to be electric by 2050 and says the move could save thousands of lives as well as billions of dollars.“We know that air pollution is still a significant health threat,” said Paul Billings, Senior VP of Advocacy at the American Lung Association. “We know that air pollution makes respiratory infections worse and we know that climate change is impacting everyone's health today.”The association’s new report also calls for less coal power and more wind and solar. To get to their goal, they want people to learn more about electric cars.“People have range anxiety. They are afraid they're not going to be able to get as far as they need to go, but today's electric cars can go 300 miles per charge. The average daily miles a consumer drives is around 40 or 50 miles, so you would only need to recharge maybe once, twice a week,” said Billings.The association says auto and policy makers need to do a better job of advertising and selling these vehicles. They want to see more incentives to buy, and more charging infrastructure.A review of more than 700 scientific studies found traffic pollution causes asthma attacks and impairs lung function. The America Lung Association says reducing emissions by 2050 could prevent 93,000 asthma attacks.They say it could create a fairer world when it comes to health, since communities of color are more likely to live closer to major pollution sources. 1574

COVID-19 isn't the only concern with the upcoming election.The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are warning local governments about possible ransomware attacks, something like malicious software blocking officials from access to voting systems.Experts think that is more of a likely scenario than altering actual votes.“The only way to ensure confidence is to demonstrate that you've done everything you possibly can to facilitate that safe and secure election,” said Maya Worman, Executive Director of Election Cyber Surge Initiative.The initiative is led by the University of Chicago. It’s pairing local election officials with volunteer cyber security experts to address specific areas of cyber security concerns.“And the biggie, I think, is human error, user error, whether that is accidentally sending sensitive information to the wrong person, not having a strong password management system, sharing passwords,” said Worman.The pandemic is adding further complications, with just more than 90 days to go.Worman says they felt the urgency to be proactive in helping election officials.“Now, we’ve got so many people working from home on their own devices,” said Worman. “An organization has no insight into what the security around your home, Wi-Fi or home devices, is.”This free resource is invaluable for elections. Some states rely on staff or federal assistance for cybersecurity. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island.Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic.The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port.She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period.The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. Claire's has filed for bankruptcy. The hub for ear piercings at malls across America is the latest retailer to succumb to its massive pile of debt.Claire's, which says it has pierced more than 100 million ears around the world, reached a restructuring agreement with its creditors. In a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on Monday, Claire's said it will reduce its by debt .9 billion. It held .1 billion in debt at the end of 2017.The company will continue to operate its approximately 1,600 Claire's and Icing brand stores in the United States during the bankruptcy process and expects to complete it by September. International stores are not part of the restructuring agreement."This transaction substantially reduces the debt on our balance sheet," Claire's CEO Ron Marshall said in a statement. "We will complete this process as a healthier, more profitable company." Marshall came from now-defunct bookstore chain Borders. Claire's struggles stem from a deal it struck more than a decade ago that left it burdened with debt.In 2007, Apollo Management, a private equity firm, bought Claire's for .1 billion and took the company private in what's known as a leveraged buyout.Claire's could never escape its debt load.
