SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego contractor who admitted to stealing people’s money and not doing the work was sentenced Wednesday. Stephen Hage entered the courtroom as a free man, but left in shackles. Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin exposed the San Diego contractor back in 2018. Late last year, Hage pleaded guilty to three counts of grand theft and two counts of theft from an elder. Wednesday, he was sentenced to one year in custody on the charges. The man says Hage took his money and didn’t finish the job. The accusations brought up in court today. Prosecutors say total restitution to Hage’s 22 San Diego victims is about ,000. Wednesday, he brought in a check that’s not even close. “To come to court with ,700 after numerous months really isn’t sufficient.”The defense arguing he’s doing the best he can. “He’s not taking money from people and living this life of luxury, he’s barley getting by. After 30 days, Hage will be released to work furlough so he can earn money to pay back his victims.It will be up to Yuma County, Arizona whether or not to press charges there. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Point Loma grandmother put up Christmas lights to spread cheer during California's stay-home order. It started when Johnene Smith saw Italians singing in solidarity amid a lock down due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She then heard about people putting up Christmas lights to brighten neighbors spirits and something clicked."I'm like I can do that! I don't have to leave my house and people can walk by and see the heart and [spread] just a little joy," Smith said.So she put up a glowing heart in her living room window. "I went and found a piece of cardboard, made a heart and poked little holes and put the lights in it, so they could see my heart is out there for everyone." Smith hoped it would bring some much needed joy during the stay-at-home order which is keeping her from her seven grandchildren. "The youngest is going to be a year old in two weeks and we're not going to be able to go to her birthday party," She said sadly.She took this time to focus instead on what she can control, which is her happiness. Particularly, that means reminiscing about Christmastime, "it was really the last time we had joy before everything started was at Christmastime so why not bring back a little joy in a time where we can't control it."Her display went up Friday sparking her neighbors to light up their own homes.Neighbor Jojo Peters was thrilled at the idea. "When Johnene says let's do lights, I said okay! And I went and dug them out as fast as I could and threw them up!"Both want to spread love and calm.'I just want them to see the hope that's there, and that we're all there for each other,' she said.Smith hopes more San Diegans join in spreading cheer in this time of uncertainty. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken mother is making a plea for tips after a burglar makes off with a computer with with "priceless memories."An upset Sheila Conway shared her story with 10News, weeks after she returned to her home on Norwich Street to a break-in. It appears the burglar opened an unlocked outer door, before somehow opening another door. Taken were Conway's purse and her silver HP laptop. Inside that computer: A lifetime of memories of her only child, her son Tyler Peckham. Tyler, diagnosed with schizophrenia, took his own life in 2014 at the age of 26. Just off the kitchen is a wall memorial dedicated to Tyler, filled with photos showing Tyler growing up into adulthood. Conway says the computer contained hundreds of photos, most of them not backed up. “Cried a lot and just furious. It wasn’t a laptop, but memories that were stolen … everything from baby pictures to adult photos that I’ll never see again,” said Conway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego law student is making parking less expensive downtown. The city approved to lower rates and extend parking hours along Third Avenue and Cedar Street on Thursday. It's no secret downtown parking is tough. "Sometimes it’s just hard to find one," said Oday Yousif. "That’s the problem. It’s never guaranteed."For students at Cal Western Law School, it's not any easier. "8 o'clock in the morning, that’s when the meters start running. That’s when most classes start; they’re already full," said Yousif. There are 26 metered spots on Third Avenue and Cedar Street right next to the school. "My bank statement is just filed 'City of San Diego parking'. .25 an hour for a max of two hours. So, after those two hours, you have to move your car or you’ll get a ticket," said Yousif.He got three tickets in one year. "They’re about 60 to 70 dollars, and then there’s a fee. I've appealed every single one I've got."Yousif wrote an email to the city to try to fix the situation. He worked on a resolution with the Downtown Parking Management Group for ten months. They proposed lowering the rate to 50 cents per hour for up to four hours of parking. "Giving us 50 cents an hour is not only beneficial to help students, but doing it at four hours is the perfect combination to help students who are just trying to have an ideal parking scenario," said Yousif. That proposal was approved unanimously by the City Transportation Engineering Division on Thursday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local dreamer is fighting for a chance to see his dying grandfather in Mexico.Luis Tinoco, who was brought to the United States in 1989 when he was five-years-old, received protective status under DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program enacted during the Obama Administration.In the past, DACA recipients have been allowed to travel to their country of origin during emergencies if they obtained an “advanced parole” permit from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.On Thursday, Tinoco and his lawyer submitted an application at the UCIS office in Downtown San Diego. But they said it was denied.Tinoco can still apply by mail but he predicts it could be months before he gets a response.“There’s a high chance it might get accepted, but meanwhile, I don’t know what’s going to happen to my grandpa,” he said.Tinoco says he hasn’t seen his grandpa since he was five. All his other grandparents have passed away. 968
