SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As an active 45-year-old man who loves to surf and take adventures with his daughter, Bryce Olson was the last person his friends expected to get cancer.In 2014, a call while at work confirmed it: stage IV metastatic prostate cancer.Metastatic means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, lymph nodes, bones or other organs.“It was just shocking and sad and I didn’t know anything about this stuff, so I just...I rolled into whatever my doctors were recommending," said Olson.He says the standard of care - surgery, chemotherapy, and the initial hormone therapy - wasn't working.“I started coming to terms with my own mortality. I didn’t even think I’d see my kid get out of elementary school and I was losing hope," said Olson.Olson says he wanted to make his final days count. The Intel employee started learning about precision medicine and eventually pursued DNA sequencing to find out exactly what was driving his disease.“I'm a believer in profiling your tumor at a molecular level and trying to understand what’s driving your unique disease, and then taking that data and then finding the right drug for the right person at the right time," said Olson.His results led him to a clinical trial in Los Angeles, where he was a perfect molecular match for the drug being tested.Four years later, Olson's precision medicine journey led him to San Diego's Epic Sciences.“We're actually going to a place where no test has gone before," said Murali Prahalad, President and CEO of Epic Sciences. "These are metastatic patients; the disease has already spread. And we’re trying to understand in the later stages of the disease when it’s far more complicated, how do you then understand which treatment is the right one.”Patients like Olson have two treatment options, chemotherapy or hormone therapy."It's very important to know which medicine is going to work," said Pascal Bamford, Chief Scientific Officer of Epic Sciences, "At the metastatic end of this disease every week, every day, every month is critically important."The company has created a blood test to make the choice easier, called the Oncotype DX AR-V7 Nucleus Detect.If the antigen AR-V7 is detected in a patient, they have built a resistance to hormone therapy, meaning chemotherapy would likely be a better treatment option.“We think it’s very groundbreaking, to say this is the first test that can tell a patient which drug to go on to extend their life," said Ryan Dittamore, Chief of Medical Innovation.Dittamore says the test helps provides certainty for doctors. Patients they've studied have almost doubled their life expectancy with the AR-V7 test.“It can mean the world, not only to patients but loved ones," said Dittamore.Olson was AR-V7 negative, meaning he could continue hormone therapy.Four months in, it's working. “I’m going to see my kid not only get out of high school but college and get married. I’m fully confident that I can do that because I’m just going to keep pushing," said Olson.In December 2018 the AR-V7 test will be covered by Medicare, meaning thousands of more men will have access to it. 3150
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Concerns and questions remain about why the County of San Diego won't release the locations of restaurants or grocery stores where employees have tested positive for COVID-19. The big question is, does the public have a right to know about specific locations where workers have tested positive? 10News continued on Tuesday to try to get answers since County officials confirmed on Sunday that multiple local food handlers have tested positive. On Monday, Sprouts confirmed that two employees from its Carlsbad store tested positive.It comes after the County confirmed that an Escondido Albertson's employee tested positive after 10News independently confirmed it Saturday.The County also reported that four local restaurant workers tested positive, but wouldn't say where.During Monday's press conference, 10News asked the County, “Should the public have a right to know which restaurants may have workers who have tested positive?” Dr. Nick Yphantides eventually said in part, “As far as the naming of the restaurants and so forth, it is only appropriate and relevant if there is actionable data upon which we are looking for members of the public or individuals to follow up on.”In the same press conference, Dr. Eric McDonald clarified that in certain disease cases, the County does provide names and locations, adding, “It's because it's specifically for the public to do something. We did that in Hepatitis A. We specifically named a restaurant so that individuals who patronized that restaurant could get shots to prevent illness.”He stressed that with coronavirus, it's different, saying, “In the case of COVID-19, because of the widespread community transmission, the advice to the public in a specific named restaurant would be no different than what we're giving already to the general public which is to stay at home [and] to social distance.”The County sent 10News the following statement on Tuesday afternoon."The County does not share the names of specific restaurants or grocers who have employees who test positive, but does not prohibit or discourage the respective entities from reporting the information if they feel it is in the interest of public health. We don’t report the names because, unlike in cases of TB, there is no additional action the public needs to take. Restaurants have very clear guidelines and have been diligent about following those guidelines as well as CDC protocols. Consumers need to take the same precautions to protect themselves at every restaurant they choose to pick up from by social distancing, regularly washing their hands and self-isolating if they develop any symptoms. Each restaurant worker case reported to County DEH is investigated by public health and DEH. In every case, an evaluation is made to determine if the worker worked while symptomatic and if their duties involved food handling that might put the public who ate at the restaurant (or purchased food at a grocery store) at any greater risk than general community exposure. In all instances thus far, no greater risk has been identified. It is important to note the CDC has said that currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food. And so far, in all identified instances, these entities have done everything RIGHT in terms of actions for public health.... notice, cleaning, job analysis. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego County have doubled in the past two weeks. As cases continue to soar through the country many hospitals are being pushed to their limits.Nurses at Paradise Valley Hospital have seen some of the worst cases of COVID-19. In a new series of PSA videos, frontline workers like Rochielle Jocson are urging everyone to keep fighting.Jocson spends the night shift in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit treating patients who are struggling to survive.“I get scared honestly,” said Jocson. “I don’t want to bring it home to my family.”For the past eight months, she’s suppressed exhaustion and conquered fear.“Sometimes it’s just not within your hands and you cry it out,” said Jocson. “Let it all out, take a deep breath and do it another day.”But the situation is only getting worse.In a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher says the number of COVID-related hospitalizations have doubled in the county over the last two weeks. County hospital beds are now inching towards 80% capacity.Jocson says they’re fully staffed and have enough supplies at Paradise Valley for now, but she knows the virus is unpredictable.“Resources are limited. We don’t know when the supplies are going to last,” said Jocson.She lives through the wrath of COVID every day and knows some people still aren’t listening to the warnings.“It’s heartbreaking to just see people not follow safety precautions,” said Jocson. “It’s like a punch in the gut so-to-speak to us healthcare workers.”She’s hoping to change that with a simple message.“You may be okay but the next person that you’re giving it to, will they be okay?” said Jocson.While the road ahead will still be long, there’s nowhere else she would rather be.“That’s why we keep going when at times we want to give up,” said Jocson. “Because you have that one patient that makes it worth it.”Paradise Valley Hospital tells ABC 10News their ICU is still under capacity.
