CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – More than 300 South Bay parents and students attended a school safety forum Monday night. The Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista police held the meeting at Chula Vista High School’s Performing Arts Center.“We certainly had some questions, we pinged our kids on what drills are being done on their campuses,” said Ricky Gallegos, who has two kids that attend high schools in the district.School officials and police assured parents that they practice and prepare for the unthinkable. But police were also candid about their limited resources. They have 10 school resource officers for 61 campuses and more than 51,000 students in Chula Vista.  Police asked parents for their help by reminding them to be involved with their kids and school community and to report whatever doesn't sound right. They also told them about the “P-3 Anonymous Tip App” which was launched within the past year. They said it there have been more than 400 tips made and law enforcement removed 13 guns from San Diego County Schools as a result of the app.“I think it’s petty cool, especially that it’s anonymous because I know some students are worried that they’ll talk to someone else,” Leira Gardea, a sophomore at Chula Vista High School said.Mental health was also a big topic of discussion. The Sweetwater Union High School District says they have 13 therapists and assured parents they do their best to disturbed or troubled youth the help they need.Chula Vista Police is holding another school safety forum next week. That one will be with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. 1631

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Parents at Eastlake High School are asking the Sweetwater Union High School District board to investigate a math teacher that students accuse of making inappropriate comments. The parents say the issue started last spring when the teacher made comments about erectile dysfunction in class. Other parents say the teacher hardly teaches, forcing their kids to fall behind. Dan Huslin, a parent of an Eastlake High sophomore, said the school's principal told him last year the teacher was suspended, but this year he found out he's back in the classroom. Huslin said when he asked about why he returned, the current principal told him the district was providing the teacher counseling to help him improve. On Monday night, parents spoke at a Sweetwater district meeting and asked the board to investigate and remove the teacher. Also, parents asked the district to provide math tutoring for the students who are now behind. A district spokesperson told 10News the teacher was not suspended last year and was instead out for personal reasons, adding that they couldn't comment on whether the teacher is receiving any counseling because it is a personnel matter. The spokesperson did say the parents concerns are being addressed, but wouldn't specify how. 1288

China said Friday it will temporarily reduce tariffs on imports of American-made cars as it tries to negotiate a trade deal with the United States.Citing the meeting earlier this month between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Chinese Finance Ministry said in a statement that it will remove the additional 25% tariffs on car imports from the United States for three months starting January 1. That will bring China's tariffs on American-made cars to 15%, in line with those for cars made in other countries.China also said it would suspend its 5% tariff on 67 other auto parts.China imposed the additional tariffs on US cars in July and on some auto parts in September as part of its retaliation in the trade war between the two countries. At their meeting in Argentina, Trump and Xi agreed to a temporary truce while they try to negotiate a broad trade deal over the next 90 days.In its statement Friday, the Finance Ministry described the decision to remove the tariffs as a "concrete action" aimed at helping to bring about a "mutually beneficial new Sino-US trade order."Xi pledged in April that China would cut tariffs on imported cars this year. His government delivered on that promise in July, reducing import taxes from 25% to 15%.But just days later, China imposed new additional tariffs of 25% on American-made passenger vehicles as the trade war with the United States escalated. The tariffs hurt profits of major automakers that ship cars to China from the United States. Germany's BMW and Daimler, the owner of Mercedes-Benz, have been hit particularly hard. Shares of BMW (BMWYY) and Daimler (DDAIF) both trimmed early Friday losses on the news. The stocks had spiked last week after Trump tweeted that China was going to cut auto tariffs.General Motors (GM) and some other automakers already have a large presence in China through partnerships with local manufacturers. It has become the largest and most important market for the American auto industry. Because their plants are in the country, they weren't subject to big import taxes.Yet China's tariffs have hurt exports from US auto plants. The value of US passenger car exports to China has fallen by .4 billion, or 30%, over the course of the first nine months of the year.Part of that could be because of slowing Chinese auto sales. Yet overall sales of American cars in China -— including those made in China — are down only about 1% so far this year.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Children of the world can rest easy. The global pandemic won’t stop them from tracking Santa Claus’ progress as he delivers gifts around the globe on Christmas Eve.The North American Aerospace Defense Command has announced that NORAD will track Santa on Dec. 24, just as it has done for 65 years. But there will be some changes: Not every child will be able to get through to a volunteer at NORAD’s call center to check on Santa’s whereabouts, as they have in years before.Normally, 150-160 volunteers crowd into a conference room at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, taking two-hour shifts to answer the phones as eager children call to see if Santa and his sleigh have reached their rooftops. All together, 1,500 people over 20 hours have participated in the call center in the past, fielding more than 130,000 phone calls, beginning at 6 a.m. Eastern time on Christmas Eve.This year, due to safety restrictions forced by the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of volunteers has been drastically cut to what NORAD expects will be fewer than 10 people per shift.“We understand this is a time-honored tradition, and we know undoubtedly there is going to be some disappointment,” said NORAD spokesman Preston Schlachter. “But we’re trying to keep it safe for everyone involved.”So, some callers may be able to once again get through to a member of the military or other volunteer when they dial the NORAD Tracks Santa toll-free number, 1-877-Hi-NORAD. But others will get a recorded update on Santa’s current location.Schlachter said NORAD will largely be limiting volunteers to people who already work there and their immediate families. But that could be expanded a bit as the time gets closer. He said that this year volunteers will answer health questions and have their temperature checked when they arrive, and a cleaning crew will wipe down surfaces throughout the day. There will be wipes and other supplies available, and between shifts the entire calling area will be sanitized before the next group comes in.Faced with concerns about the virus, officials at NORAD have worked for weeks to figure out a way to ensure that the much-beloved tradition could go on.The military command has been fielding calls since 1955, when Air Force Col. Harry Shoup — the commander on duty at NORAD’s predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command — fielded a call from a child who dialed a misprinted telephone number in a newspaper department store ad, thinking she was calling Santa.A fast-thinking Shoup quickly assured his caller that he was. And the tradition began.Today, most early calls come from Japan and Europe, and as the day goes on the callers from the U.S. and Canada climb.Besides the call center, the NORAD Tracks Santa website — noradsanta.org — as well as social media pages, Amazon Alexa, Onstar and a new mobile app will still be available with up-to-the-minute details on Santa’s location. A social media team will operate from a separate conference room at the base. The tracking Santa apps will soon be available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. 3085
