The 29th named tropical system of the Atlantic hurricane season formed on Monday, marking a new yearly record for the basin.Subtropical Storm Theta formed over the open waters of the eastern Atlantic Monday evening, packing top winds of 50 mph. The storm is far from any land, and does not pose any immediate threat to land.Theta marks the deepest jaunt down the Greek hurricane naming list. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Florida woman was shocked by an early-morning visitor that had made herself at home in her Christmas tree — a raccoon.Early Thursday morning, at about 4:15 a.m., Aubrey Iacobelli was woken up by her dog growling."I have a doggy door and my dog sleeps right in front of that dog door. I hear her going in and out all night. I wake up and I hear her barking outside," Iacobelli said.She asked her Amazon Alexa to turn on the lights, and saw her dog was staring at the Christmas tree and barking."I just knew that there was something there that shouldn't have been there. I see a furry body in the Christmas tree," she said.She grabbed a frying pan to try to get the animal — which she thought was a cat — out of her tree."I didn't want to hurt the animal. I just wanted it outside of the house," she said,That's when the raccoon finally came out of the tree and revealed itself. Iacobelli and her dog spotted the raccoon on the side of the tree and the dog jumped towards it, knocking over the tree.Warning: The video below contains some explicit language."The raccoon ran away from freedom. SYDNEY, Australia – Koalas are on track to become extinct in New South Wales before 2050, according to a report from the Australian state’s parliament.A committee released the report Tuesday after a year-long inquiry and it’s asking the government to take immediate action to save the nation’s most loved animal.A government estimate showed that there are about 36,000 koalas in the state, but the committee says that estimate is outdated and unreliable.The report says the loss in koalas is partly a result of the 2019-2020 bushfires that devastated the country. The committee says at least 5,000 koalas were lost in the fires over the past year, potentially more.“An estimated 24% of koala habitat on public land has been severely impacted across the state, but in some parts, there has been a devastating loss of up to 81%,” the report says of the wildfire devestation.However, the committee says the most serious threat to koalas is habitat loss.“The ongoing destruction of koala habitat through the clearing of land for agriculture, development, mining and forestry has severely impacted most koala populations in the state over many decades,” wrote committee chair Cate Faehrmann. “The committee found that this fragmentation and loss of habitat poses the most serious threat to koala populations and made a number of key recommendations that stronger action must be taken by government to protect and restore koala habitat on both public and private land.”The committee also found that climate change is having a severe impact on koalas, not only by affecting the quality of their food and habitat, but also by compounding the severity and threats of other impacts, such as drought and bushfires.Along with its findings, the committee provided a long list of recommendations for the government to implement in order to save the state’s koalas. Those included prioritizing the protection of koala habitat corridors, improving monitoring methods and increased funding.One recommendation encourages the government to look into the establishment of a Great Koala National Park on New South Wales’ North Coast. 2120

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning that the number of online puppy scams has risen sharply in 2020. The rise in scams comes as more families seek to adopt pets to ease the loneliness, tension or boredom associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.Scammers are taking advantage of the rising demand by tricking would-be pet owners into paying hundreds of dollars or more to purchase animals that ultimately don’t exist.The BBB says its Scam Tracker has received nearly 4,000 reports of pet fraud so far this year and the bureau projects it will receive about 4,300 reports by the end of 2020, amounting to approximately .1 million in losses. Last year, there were only 1,870 pet scams reported, amounting to just over million.The BBB says it started to see this spike in scams when the pandemic hit the U.S. in the spring. Accordingly, there were more reports in April than in the first three months of the year combined. This trend is continuing into the holiday season as well. The BBB says it received 337 complaints about puppy scams in 2020, which is a dramatic increase from 77 for the same month in 2019.The median loss reported to Scam Tracker this year is 0 and victims between 35 and 55 accounted for half of the reports.With scammers evolving their tactics during these difficult times, the BBB says consumers should exercise extreme caution when shopping for pets online.Data from the Scam Tracker shows that mobile payment apps like Zelle and CashApp are often being used now, whereas Western Union or MoneyGram wire transfers were popular payment methods documented in a 2017 study. Also, the BBB says pet scammers now commonly use online advertising tools, like sponsored links to boost their fraudulent listings in search results.Additionally, the pandemic has given scammers a new tool in their arsenal. Reports show many fraudsters are telling victims they cannot meet the animals before sending money because of COVID-19. To combat this, experts recommend using video conferencing to meet the animal and owner virtually before buying.Scammers have also made COVID-19-related money requests for items such as climate-controlled crates, insurance and non-existent COVID-19 vaccines.Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO, says knowing the red flags associated with these pet scams can help consumers avoid heartache and losing their money.The BBB recommends the following when buying pets online:See the pet in person before paying any money. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, consider a video call with the seller so you can see the seller and the actual pet for sale. Since scammers are not likely to comply with the request, this may help avoid a scam.Do a reverse image search of the photo of the pet and search for a distinctive phrase in the description.Do research to get a sense of a fair price for the breed you are considering. TAMPA, Fla. — A Tampa man was released from prison on Thursday afternoon after 37 years behind bars for a murder and rape officials now say he didn't commit.Robert DuBoise, 55, walked free after an 11-month investigation by the Conviction Review Unit of the State Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the Innocence Project, determined he was innocent.“I’m just happy to get home to my family," he said. "It’s a beautiful day.”The first thing DuBoise said he did was hug his mom, Myra, and sister, Harriett.
