LAKE CHARLES, La. – They say, "not all heroes wear capes," and a group of hospital workers in Louisiana proved that.Despite raging winds, rain leaking through windows, no running water and no air conditioning, nurses and other staff at a Lake Charles hospital kept their most critical baby patients safe and sound during Hurricane Laura last week.The team of 20 stayed behind at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital while the Category 4 storm tore through the city. They cared for 19 babies in their NICU.Some of the babies were on respirators and ventilators, and others had been born extremely premature.Many of the infants had been at the community’s smaller women's hospital. They had to be transported through rough conditions to the larger facility where they rode out the storm.The babies have since been transferred to other hospitals across the state because the hospital was still without water as of Thursday night. 928

LAKE WALES, Florida — A 38-year-old man was arrested after being accused of shooting and killing another man on Thanksgiving Day in Polk County.Steven Nicholas Hunt, 38 of Winter Haven, is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after fatally shooting Stephen Edward Roberts, 45 of Lake Wales, in his home, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.Deputies said they responded to Roberts' home on Lake Buffum Road in Lake Wales and found him with a gunshot wound to his head after receiving a call, at approximately 2:30 p.m., from a woman who said she had dropped off Hunt at the Circle K gas station located at 7695 Highway 60 East in Bartow after the incident.According to an arrest affidavit, the woman told deputies she and Roberts initially drove to Hunt's house to take him to Walmart and then went to Roberts' home in Lake Wales afterward. While at Roberts' home, she said she showered, went into another bedroom after seeing the two talking in the master bedroom and then heard what sounded like a gunshot.Hunt initially told deputies he went to the Circle K with the witness but did not know of what happened at Roberts' home. He then said he 'suddenly remembered' he was with Roberts in his home when he was shot. In the arrest affidavit, Hunt goes on to say that he was talking with Roberts in his bedroom when tried to hand him a handgun and asked him to 'put him out of his misery.' Hunt said eventually Roberts told him to leave and close the door and as he was walking away he heard a gunshot.Later, during a clarifying interview, Hunt gave another description of the shooting to deputies. He said Roberts' ask him to shoot him and then showed him how to use the handgun. Hunt told deputies he took the handgun from Roberts, as Roberts laid down and put a pillow over his head, and shot him in the head before putting the handgun next to him on the bed.Deputies said Hunt told them "he believed he fired another shot at Roberts," after the witness told him he was still breathing and asked him to help him."While most people in the county were enjoying a holiday meal with their families and loved ones on Thanksgiving day, a senseless murder was taking place in Lake Wales. Our deputies, detectives, and crime scene investigators worked throughout the day and well into the night on this case. We are grateful that this violent convicted felon was taken into custody swiftly and without further injury to anyone else. Our condolences go out to the victim and his loved ones," said Sheriff Grady Judd.Hunt's criminal history includes 16 previous felony and 10 misdemeanor charges; 7 felony and 6 misdemeanor convictions; and numerous previous arrests for battery domestic violence, resisting arrest, burglary, larceny, grand theft of a firearm, dealing in stolen property, possession of meth, possession of marijuana. His most recent arrest was November 7, 2018, for battery domestic violence. He was released on probation November 14.Hunt's being held on no bond until his first appearance on Saturday, November 24. 3142

(KGTV) - A man reportedly armed with a knife was shot by police officers during a confrontation in La Mesa Monday.The shooting happened before 9 a.m. on Fletcher Parkway, at Amaya Drive, La Mesa police told 10News.Police said a 13-year-old girl reported that an unknown man was throwing knives at her and chased her.The girl ran to a sandwich shop to call 911, police told 10News. She was not injured.RELATED: Threats against East County schools investigatedResponding officers located the man on Fletcher Parkway and attempted to take him into custody, but during the confrontation in which police officials said he refused to drop a knife, officers fired at least two shots at the man.The injured man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His condition is unknown.According to the girl's mother, Tammy Brown, her daughter was on her way to Parkway Middle School when she stopped by to walk with a friend who lives near Fletcher Parkway and Amaya. Before she arrived, the victim noticed the man mumbling and yelling to himself before he reportedly threw a closed pocket knife at the victim, striking her.  1175

(CNS) - Helicopters made water-dropping sorties Thursday morning on fast-moving, out-of-control wildfire, which was 0% contained after scorching 10,500 acres in the Lake Hughes area, prompting the mandatory evacuation of at least 100 structures.The Lake Fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to Marvin Lim of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was battling the blaze along with Angeles National Forest crews, as well as assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterery Park and Santa Monica fire departments.ABC 10News learned teams from Rancho Santa Fe, Vista Fire, San Miguel Fire, Lakeside Fire, Oceanside Fire, Camp Pendleton, Pala Reservation, San Pasqual, and likely San Diego Fire-Rescue were dispatched to assist in the firefighting effort.Three San Diego County strike teams will also respond, with each team bringing five trucks.As of 7 a.m. Thursday, the fire's size was listed as 10,500 acres, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported.The fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.The fire "will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon and Three Points," the Los Angeles County Fire Department said about 10 p.m. Wednesday, adding air operations would continue overnight.By 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the flames had burned 400 acres, and officials said the fire had the potential to burn 1,000 acres, according the department. LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community.
