KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington.It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez.He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said.It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds. KAKE, Alaska. – A rare white killer whale was recently spotted off the southeast coast of Alaska.The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) says people on an 80-foot charter boat witnessed the “less-than-once-in-a-lifetime” event on Aug. 7, just offshore of the village of Kake.UAF graduate student Stephanie Hayes was working as first mate of the boat and was among the lucky few who spotted “glowing” orca in a pod of killer whales.The rest of the whales in the pod, about three or four others, were the typical dairy-cow black-and-white colors, according to UAF.Hayes recognized how rare the sighting was, because she had studied killer whales during her undergraduate work in British Columbia.“There have only been about eight white killer whales ever recorded in the world,” Hayes told UAF. “To have one in Southeast was an incredible phenomenon.”Hayes told UAF that the white killer whale has a condition called leucism, which she defined as a “lack of vibrancy” in its pigmentation.“Caused by a mutation in the whale’s DNA, leucism is different from albinism, in which a creature is all white, with pink eyes,” wrote UAF in a press release.Turns out, the whale had been spotted before by researchers and named Tl’uk, a word for moon in the language of the Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest.When Tl’uk leaves its pod, Hayes says its glow might be a disadvantage, perhaps alerting its prey of its approach. KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  Multiple officials in Leavenworth County, Kansas are urging a county commissioner to resign after the white commissioner told a black woman at a meeting that he was part of "the master race."Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp made the comments at a meeting about a land-use study on Tuesday."I don’t want you to think I am picking on you because we are part of the master race. You have a gap in your teeth. We are part of the master race, don’t you forget that," Klemp said.  “It affects all of Leavenworth. This has been such negative publicity. It affects us. It affects the city,” Leavenworth mayor Mark Preisinger said. “It’s a stain on our community and it has to be removed.” "I was shocked. I was in disbelief," fellow commissioner Robert Holland said. "He should resign. I don't care if he's got two days left, he should resign." Klemp did not respond to a formal request for an interview, though he implied off-camera that he meant the comment as a jokeThis is not the first time the commissioner's remarks have sparked controversy. Last year, while discussing the county's holiday schedule, Klemp made controversial remarks about Robert E. Seemed like forever," said Blanco.When the home finally stopped moving, Blanco ran to his children and found them safe. A few things fell and a few cabinet doors opened, but there was no major damage. In the first few hours after the quake, he felt more than 10 aftershocks.
