SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego sailor is on a mission to keep homeless veterans from going cold this winter.U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory Ellis hopes to raise ,500 for winter jackets that convert into both sleeping bags and over-the-shoulder bags during the off-season.The jackets are made by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Empowerment Plan, which hires single parents from homeless shelters to sew the jackets. “Our homeless veteran community, many of them are very proud and don’t want to be a burden on anybody,” said Ellis.He plans to deliver the jackets to veterans staying at the Veterans Village of San Diego temporary bridge shelter, which houses nearly 200 homeless veterans. “A jacket that actually converts into a sleeping bag, that actually converts to an over-the-shoulder bag, it’s three times beneficial for them, so at least they’ll have something warm to put over their shoulders and keep them out of the elements.”Ellis says he wants veterans to know the community cares about them and is grateful for their service.You can donate to the fundraising effort here. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airbnb reported this year how much revenue it contributes to renters and the City of San Diego during high-demand events and holiday weekends.The vacation rental website said it generated an estimated million in transient occupancy taxes for the City of San Diego between July 2015 and Aug. 2019.San Diego was a popular destination for travelers last summer, Airbnb reported. Hosts earned a combined million with some 345,400 guest arrivals between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.RELATED: Team 10 investigates wild, violent parties at short term vacation rentalsTop events included the July period spanning Pride and Comic-Con. During that time, Airbnb reported roughly 41,000 guest arrivals and million in revenue for hosts.Rentals set a record over Labor Day weekend, with 15,000 San Diego tourists choosing to stay at Airbnb properties, the company said.“While San Diego hotels are well known to book up and sell out well in advance in spite of high nightly rates, the Airbnb home-sharing community helps the city welcome visitors for big events like these by adding additional lodging options and allowing visitors to find affordable places to stay together,” the company said in a news release.RELATED: Gunfire reported during party at La Jolla mansionAirbnb said around three-quarters of its listings are outside of central hotel districts, putting vacationers into neighborhoods with permanent residents.The presence of vacation rentals has created tension in some communities. In May, shots were fired during a party at an Airbnb rental in La Jolla. Five people were shot and killed at an Airbnb rental in the Northern California city of Orinda on Oct. 28. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego psychiatrist no longer has a license after authorities say he was intoxicated while practicing.According to the Medical Board of California, Marco Antonio Chavez’s license was suspended following an investigation.The investigation began after authorities say a patient reported that Chavez sent him a box of medication in 2017 that contained an empty vodka bottle.During one of several office visits, an investigator said Chavez appeared to be intoxicated.Documents show that Chavez told the investigator that his mother gave him a “Mexican home remedy to stop his drinking” which consisted of vodka and cloves. At a hearing, Chaves said he had two of the drinks that morning.During the visit, the investigator told Chavez he believed he was “so intoxicated that he could not practice medicine” and told two patients in the waiting room to go home.A test conducted by a San Diego Police officer shows that Chavez had a blood alcohol level of .216. Authorities say Chavez’s license was suspended on May 7. 1044

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A tortoise no longer on the loose is still waiting for its rightful owner in East County.The tortoise, believed to be an older male, was found Thursday by Heartland Paramedics.It was roaming the streets of El Cajon and is now staying at the El Cajon Animal Shelter.Workers there say this is not a situation they often face.“Not in the City of El Cajon," said Shelter Manager Jill Jones. "Perhaps in outer-lying counties, they have a little more tortoise traffic, but we generally do not."A family who saw the original 10News story believed the tortoise was their beloved pet Frankie who went missing a week ago. However, upon arrival at the shelter, they quickly realized this tortoise was much larger.If you believe the tortoise is yours, you can go to the shelter during regular business hours.
