Lots of folks do their shopping on the internet these days, especially on Amazon. Not only because it's convenient, but you can find some great bargains. But wait until you hear how much a woman in Gallatin, Tennessee was charged for some paper plates. It was certainly no deal. Lorie Galloway said she does a lot of shopping on Amazon. She's a Prime member and told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville, "I don't order anything unless it's free shipping." Just before Christmas, Galloway bought some plates. Then her husband, Bob Galloway, got the bill."He sent me a text," Lorie Galloway recalled. "'What did you order at Amazon?' And, I'm like, 'What?' He said, 'Our bill is a thousand and something dollars.'"Now these plates she bought were not the kind you keep in a china cabinet. These were heavy duty paper plates. A hundred of them. Lorie Galloway said she thought she was getting for with free shipping. It turns out, the plates were ."But there was a ,080 shipping charge," Bob Galloway explained.It cost more than ,000 to ship a package of paper plates. "I mean that's just crazy for paper plates," Lorie Galloway said.And, her husband added, "I really thought it was some clerical error."The Galloways repeatedly tried contacting the seller and got no response. So they called Amazon about the charge."The reaction from the customer service representative at Amazon was, 'Wow, that's ridiculous,'" Bob Galloway said. So were these plates coming from somewhere half way around the world? No, according to the paperwork, they were shipped by UPS from Atlanta. Amazon eventually agreed to open an investigation and the company told Lorie Galloway they'd determined she  was "not overcharged for the transaction."Lorie Galloway said she believed she was overcharged. According to Amazon, the seller said they'd "sent the plates with expedited service," that Lorie Galloway had selected that option when she placed her order and had agreed to the ,000+ shipping fee, something Galloway insists isn't true. "If it would have said a thousand and something dollars, I would have noticed that," she said. If you try finding the seller now who sold Lorie Galloway those plates, you won't. An Amazon rep told the couple the seller had been dismissed after doing similar things to other customers. But Amazon refused to confirm that for us.And Amazon was asked why it didn't have technology to flag and even prevent outrageous charges like this, the company refused to directly answer the question and instead sent a statement saying, "Amazon is constantly innovating and improving our customer experience. If customers have concerns or feedback, we encourage them to contact our Customer Service."But that's what the Galloways did and Amazon told them there was nothing they could do. Lorie Galloway said she is now reconsidering where she shops. "If they [Amazon] are not going to take care of their customers, why should I order from them again?" she said. The Galloways spent the last couple of months disputing the shipping charge with their credit card company. Finally, just the other day, they got word that the shipping would be refunded.  3398

Marvel Studios and the director of Black Panther released emotional tributes for Chadwick Boseman following his death.Boseman was cast as Black Panther in the Marvel Studios movie “Captain America”, then appeared as the character in his own movie, then two “Avengers” movies in addition to cast appearances. The video tribute from Marvel Studios has interviews with cast members talking about him as an actor and working alongside him.It also has clips from Boseman himself talking about playing the iconic character.“It’s fun to watch just what it means to people. At times, like in my head, I’ll be like ‘well, what does this do for the world, like actually, is it actually valuable in this climate?’ And I have to say yes. It actually is. Not because it makes people escape. I think when done right, it gives people hope. I found that it means a lot,” Boseman says in the video.Black Panther director, Ryan Coogler, released a statement to the media following news of Boseman’s death, in which he called the actor “calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that seen much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time.”Coogler says he will miss working with Boseman and that he spent the last year preparing lines for him they will never work on.“It hurts more to know that we can’t have another conversation, or facetime, or text message exchange. Many animal shelters are worried the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will cause a surge in pet surrenders, a stark contrast from when shelters saw record fostering and adoption rates four months ago."What we've seen since then is that the number of total dogs and cats that have come into shelters and rescues across the country has continued to decrease compared to the levels of 2019. So, fostering has stayed high but we just have fewer animals that we’re trying to get into foster care than the shelters had to last year," says Lindsay Hamrick with the Humane Society of the United States.Hamrick says animal control centers that shut down during the start of the pandemic are now back up and operating, but are still being selective about which animals need to be picked up."Intakes are still about 40% down compared to 2019 for both cats and dogs," says Hamrick.Valley Oak SPCA in Visalia, California, saw a record number of adoptions in June, nearly double what they had last year. But executive director Lydia House says they're concerned about the impact the economy will have in the coming months."We had a couple surrenders that said, 'I haven’t been able to feed my dog in three days. I have no money. I’m being evicted.' We did have some senior citizens who wanted to surrender their pets because they were afraid they were going to get [COVID-19] and not be able to take care of their pets," says House.The Humane Society of the United States has been closely following states that are lifting their eviction moratoriums as those states may see a boost in pet surrenders and strays."Surrenders that are related to evictions to not having enough money to be able to afford veterinary care - all of the pieces that come along with an economic downturn," says Hamrick.Overall, many shelters report with so many people working from home, adoptions and fostering of animals are still high. So the Humane Society of the United States is now urging animal lovers to think beyond shelter animals and focus on a neighbor or friend who may be going through a tough time."When someone loses their house or apartment, it's going to take months or even a year to find pet friendly housing again. So we’re really doing a push that people who are interested in fostering and had a good experience during the pandemic with taking care of other pets, to consider doing that for your neighbors. That way, possibly in the future, there can be a reunification of the pet with the family that they were separated from because of the economic issues," says Hamrick.Right now, more than half of states nationwide have lifted their eviction moratoriums.
